Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Reviews for Winter Park roofing professionals

I’m not one to normally write reviews but after our experience with Power Roofing and Construction, I had to let everyone know how exceptional this company is. We sustained roof damage from Hurricane Irma and needed a new roof. To make things worse, we were in the middle of refinancing our mortgage and when the mortgage company found out about the damage, they put everything on hold until repairs were done. I had called multiple companies and either couldn’t get an answer or call back. I contacted Power Roofing and got an immediate response. I explained to Jennifer my situation and within just a few hours, Bryan, the owner, was at my house to check out the roof and write up a contract. They then managed to get my roof on within 2 weeks!!!! They did an amazing job on the roof. Their crews were very professional, the roof looks great and they cleaned up and took care of everything. I was worried about roofing nails in the back yard due to our dog but they went over the yard with the magnet at least 4-5 times and I’ve only found 1 missed nail! In addition to the actual work, their customer service was exceptional. Even after the job was done, Jennifer went out of her way to help me get all the documentation I needed for the mortgage and insurance companies which enabled me to close on my house just over a week later than originally planned. I can't thank them enough for everything! I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for roofing or construction work!

I spoke to him about getting a free estimate for some roof work. His guy comes out get's on the roof then tells me there is a fee for the inspection + estimate. He then uses that to strong arm me into doing the work right there on the spot. Slimy. Must have something to hide or not be confident about his work if he is scared of competition coming in for an estimate.

Great experience working with Ruf Life. Very professional. Chris went up on the roof, looked for damage and took pictures so I could see where the repairs needed to be made. He also explained exactly what he'd be doing to fix the problems. All that and a one year guarantee on the work means I'll be using him again if I need more roof repairs.

Bruce who's very polite and courteous came out to our property and provided a very professional and thorough evaluation of our roofing issue. We had two others out for estimates but none explained as well as he did. Additionally, his pricing was slightly better than the others.

No show, no call or contact to say he couldn’t make appointed time today. When I contacted him, he said he got tangled up in other things and asked to reschedule tomorrow. Absolutely not. I put my eggs with a roof leak in his basket ending in not making his commitment and not even reaching out to me. Now, the rains are coming again and it’s the end of the day.

Chris is the most genuine, honest man! Not only did he give me an estimate financially on what exactly needed to be done, he gave me a step by step tutorial of how to do the entire project myself since I had decided not to hire a professional. He was thorough, personable, and I would have hired him in a heartbeat had I needed real roof work done!! :)

I was very happy with Goodman Construction Services. Bruce came out and gave me a great bid for the roof repair. I decided to hire him on a Thurs and Friday Charlie and Antwon were at my house to start the work. They were very hard working and professional. Although there was unexpected work they completed the job that day. I was very happy with all aspects of the project and would not hesitate to call them in the future. A satisfied customer, Debbie

Titan Certified Inspections were prompt to follow up with us and come out to provide a quote, working around our schedules which are quite busy. It was easy to schedule the work after we decide to go with them (which we highly recommend!). The repairs were quickly done. Even when Tyler had to stop for a wonderful Florida afternoon rain and pick up later that evening. If you are looking for a great company, with everything explained up front and make you feel comfortable in a situation most don't want to deal with (roof work that is), then pick Titan Certified Inspections. Thanks for everything Elizabeth and Tyler

Stratus roofing delivered a very good product (5/5 with less than a handful of nails found in our yard). I would explain the process like buying a used car (3/5 stars), except the salesmen comes to you. I would also advise to be very actively part of ensuring that the site supervisors are doing their jobs. They tend to sit and watch the guys work but not actually ensure they are doing what they are suppose to. Things that might be important to you or that you previously discussed are quickly forgotten. And like in any situation that you are dealing with, seasoned salesmen make sure you get everything IN DETAIL in your quote. When things change on the job site like ALL construction processes, don’t trust that they will bill you correctly for those additions. You will be happier if you’re involved in the project and have EVERYTHING IN WRITING because after the project is done, you’ll know exactly what the extras were as well as their prices. We found that when the project was complete, there was a discrepancy in what we were told due to lack of communication from the sales representative and project supervisor, this resulted in us losing trust in the integrity of the company.
