Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to install backsplash?

The time it takes to install backsplash depends on the size of the area and the type of materials you’re using. But generally, it’ll take a few days to finish the project. Porcelain or ceramic tile may take less time than that, while very small glass tiles or complicated designs are likely to add time.

Chat with the best tile specialists to find out how long it will take to install a backsplash in your home.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

Can you tile over a tile backsplash?

Yes, you can tile over your existing kitchen backsplash if you want a fresh, new look. This will only work if the surface is smooth and there are no cracked or uneven backsplash tiles in the wall. If you have a few problem tiles, simply remove and reinstall them before you tile over the wall.

In general, it’s better to start with a blank wall. However, you may save time by simply tiling over your existing tile backsplash. When in doubt, always consult a tiling professional.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic Tile

More durable, have a longer lifespan

Cheaper, easier to install

Better for high-traffic areas

Recommended for interior floors, walls

Slightly more water-resistant

Softer, easier to cut

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

What is the easiest backsplash to install?

Peel-and-stick tiles are the easiest backsplash to install, as they don’t require any materials or preparation work besides measuring.

Ceramic tile, a popular choice for many homeowners, is a fairly simple installation choice for backsplash, and it comes in almost any color and pattern.

Glass tile is a bit more difficult to install than ceramic, while stone or marble tile tends to be the most expensive.

These guys were amazing. We contacted them on Saturday to remove our existing backsplash and install a marble backsplash and they were in our house on Monday. The finished product was stunning and made our kitchen look so much brighter and elegant. Their price is great for quality of work. Could not be happier.

Razo tile did an excellent job of install our new subway tile kitchen backsplash. They arrived on time and reviewed the project. They recommended we replace the old sheet rock so the new tiles could be installed flush. They went out and purchased the sheet rock, removed the old sheet rock and installed new sheet in a couple of hours. The project also involved a tall corner area with mosaic and pencil tile, that included an arch. They did a great job of keeping the work area clean, covered the counters to protect them and thoroughly cleaned up after finishing the grouting. The new kitchen backsplash looks great and I would highly recommend this company.

Gabrini was AMAZING! He was very helpful in suggesting quick upgrades to make our kitchen look even better! He came to do the backsplash and ended up modifying our cabinets to install an Over the Range Microwave (something we’ve been wanting), installed crown molding at the top of the cabinets, installed a modern over the sink light AND addd a backsplash. All in ONE day! On top of this, he was extremely helpful with smaller tasks we were trying to get done the day before move in. We didn’t even have to ask and he was ready to lend a helping hand! He did an incredible job on our backsplash and all other projects at a great price! Would recommend to anyone and hire again :)

Daniel and his father (Daniel Sr) are great people and wonderful professionals. They rescued a bad professional tile job that someone else did in my small bathroom and laundry room. They also installed a new backsplash in my kitchen. Great job!!! I found Daniel and his father to be knowledgeable and professional. They are very customer friendly and they went above and beyond to meet my needs and request. I plan to use them for more tile work.

I hired GSG to install a backsplash in my newly remodeled kitchen. It wasn't a big job but it was a job that required skill and patience. I wanted a Herringbone pattern which includes numerous cuts and fitting of tile for it to look good. The job was made even more intricate as some of the rooms corners were not 90 degrees. Materials used were standard 3 x 6 subway tiles. The job turned out even better than I hoped for and the workmanship was close to perfect as anyone could hope for. Great personal contact before the job started as well as confirmation on agreed start date. Talked out the job and my expectations before the job started so there would be no surprises or misunderstandings. I got 4 bids for labor only as I was providing materials. The 4 bids I received were for $400, $500, $925, and $1275. GSG estimated $500 for labor and another $100 for materials which he had leftover from another job. Total cost for the completed project was $600 which I considered to be extremely reasonable and actually a good deal. I wish I had other work that needed to be done but at this time the backsplash was it. I would not hesitate the least bit to hire GSG again. I highly recommend them for your flooring or tiling needs. Their professionalism was beyond reproach as well as their agreed upon starting, working, and completion time was exactly as was discussed. Great experience.

I reached out to Casa NOVA when looking for a pro to install a backsplash in our kitchen. Gabrini responded quickly and requested project details. With that information he promptly provided a quote that was reasonable and consistent with that for similar projects I have done. We scheduled the project on the first date available. On the morning of the scheduled day, he contacted me to advise when he expected to arrive. Upon arrival, he immediately began laying out the design on the wall and engaging me in the process to get my input on details where there were options. He then proceeded efficiently and carefully to install the tile. It was obvious he knew exactly what he was doing and was committed to make it as perfect as possible. He took great care to assure the design was symmetrical and centered over the cooktop. This same attentiveness to detail was evident in the cutouts for the electric outlets that no one would see but he did them with equal precision. When finished, he cleaned up and left the room as he found it, and maybe cleaner. In addition to the professionalism and skill he brought to the task, he was also friendly and engaging. He was like a guest. In recent months, I have worked with a number of pros on various projects associated with remodeling the house. Most were pretty good experiences, but this was the best. Our project was simple, but having watched Gabrini at work, I am confident he he would do an excellent job on much more complex projects. He is definitely the one I will want to do my next tile project.
