They catered my reception for 80 people. Vincent was one of the two caterers whose first reply responded to my request for a vegan menu with creative suggestions and ample selections. He was promptly responsive at all times during the planning stage. They were better than on time, they arrived a bit early. Travis set everything up, served, and interacted well with the guests. The food was attractively presented, had great visual appeal and best of all tasted great. His cleanup afterward was impeccable. I highly recommend GHI.

Nikki is an excellent chef - food was delicious. She was on time and was very personable! The young men she brought with her were so nice! I had asked for her to prepare extra homemade croutons for me to have the next day and though she said of course I suspect in the haste to leave she forgot them. ( By the way they were great!) The only comment I would make in using a chef versus my regular caterers is that Nikki and her team planned to leave while we were eating dessert. In doing so I would have been left to clean all those dishes ( 10 seated guests) and wine glasses myself. She said that was the way she always did things. None of my caterers have ever done that -- that is part of what you are paying for ($700+) to enjoy your evening and have no work to do ! Just being hostess is enough getting the house and flowers and table set! Nikki knew we had 50 people arriving post dinner for an after party and needed the dinner dishes all pulled and cleaned - was very disappointed that we had to discuss that at the last minute! I had hired a separate bartender for the glasses to be taken care at the post party. I expected her to not do any of those dishes. I did ask her to place trays of desserts I had prepared on the "cleaned off" dining table when they finished. ( I paid them a handsome tip for doing this) Also - I have never had a caterer use the dishwasher for my dishes - I have always found them hand washed and stacked in kitchen. Nikki's team loaded my dishwashers (2) with the hand painted china and sterling flatware. I should have explained that is not done - my mistake, I just haven't had to before. She is an EXCELLENT CHEF! Services are not as "easy" on the host and her familiarity with things like the china and silver should be discussed before hand. Be very specific about every detail on how you see the evening going - write it up so you both know. We had Sea Bass and It Was Amazing!

The Bountiful Basket was our caterer for our wedding on July 10. There is not enough that could be said about what Mike and his team did for us. They were way more than caterers. Mike handled everything: tables, tents, chairs, dinnerware, glassware for both our wedding and our rehearsal dinner. His staff was so very professional and on the ball. And the food....WOW. It was incredible evidenced by the fact that there was very little left. His mac and cheese is unique and fantastic. The shrimp and grits were fabulous and he makes fried chicken just like your grandmother. Please seriously consider The Bountiful Basket for any catering event. You will not be sorry. Thanks Mike and crew you made our day perfect.

Kendra does such a great job on her cooking! She serves not just your average dishes, but she takes normal foods that we eat everyday and adds a CREATIVE and delightful taste to everything! Her cooking will make you like goods that you usually hate! She truly has a passion for cooking and there's nobody better that you could have to serve your crew. She LOVES to serve customers the food they enjoy! Cooking With a Star is one of the best and affordable catering companies I've ever experienced.

Marcus and Devon did a fantastic job. We had a post game hot meal. The game was delayed due to weather so the meal was served 90 minutes later than expected. It was all still fresh and delicious. I highly recommend Pas de Deux. Talented chefs and service with a smile.

Where do I begin from start to finish the service was impeccable!! I am a perfectionist and I rarely find caterers to meet my standards. We just finished our event catered by The funnel cake guys! There wasn’t an empty plate, leftovers or one complaint from leadership or myself. The staff was very professional, they engaged with our employees always smiled. We went with the BBQ options the Ribs are to Die for as well as the Mac n cheese, sautéed garlic spinach and employee hit fresh zucchini fries!! Thank you for doing a phenomenal job this morning.

We enjoyed having her as a wedding planner and caterer. The food was great and we really enjoyed the breakfast for dinner, including the pancake cutting instead of the typical wedding cake. As a planner she really held things together. I have seen weddings where the planner (or day of organizer) is too quiet and cannot handle the crowds. This is not the case with Stephanie. She was politely in control when she needed to be (like at the rehearsal), but at the same time she disappeared when she needed to. It was like magic was happening that we couldn’t see that made things run smoothly! I know she deflected at least 1 or 2 major things that happened the morning of the day of. She kept the groom in the loop as needed, and let the bride have her day without the stress. Stephanie also provided us with things like chairs and other items when we were struggling to find an affordable or practical option. She also held off rain that was forecasted to threaten our day! I would highly recommend her as a planner.

Very Professional, Knowledgeable, On Time, Great layout of the food and I could go on and on! Daphne and her staff were on point! I wish there were more stars to give. Our event involved about 75-80 people. The price was very reasonable and her/staff was AMAZING! Going forward we are going to use her company for all of our catering events. Our company has a staff of 90 plus people. She even remember things that I forgot about. She made everything so easy. They were on time, they set everything up, came back and broke everything down. Would our company use her company again ABSOULTELY!!! In a word PERFECT!! On behalf of Butler Lexus we want to say THANK YOU!!

I have worked with Atlanta Food Connect while working with my last two employers. The best thing about working with Shayna at Atlanta Food Connect is that it is so easy and I still look like a total rock star. If I have lunch meetings all week, it only takes one phone call to make all of them happen! When I have special events, Shayna works with me to create the right menu for the right audience with the right caterer. I won't work with anyone else

Chef Kerby was catering an event a my coworker hosted around the time of the NBA Finals. The game was good but all anyone could talk about was the food he prepared. You can tell Chef Kerby takes his time to make sure you appreciate the meal as much as he did preparing it.

Totally Fresh Catering was AMAZING!! I hired them to cater my birthday party, and I'm glad I did.. The food was delicious. The Smoked Ribs and Chicken were seasoned to perfection.. Great hickory flavor, and meat falling off the bone.. I could tell that the sides were made from scratch, and fresh.. They arrived and had everything set-up on time. Very professional service and staff. They went over and beyond to make my party a memorable one. Everything looked great. I've also used Totally Fresh for my Travel Parties as well. They always impress me!! Thanks Totally Fresh Catering!!

From beginning to end, partnering with Dargin’s Creole Kitchen was one of the best decisions I could have made. Trina and Chris, along with their catering staff, are outstanding! Starting with the consultation, they put my mind at ease. The menu planning was a joy (they gave great suggestions – most were better than any idea that I could have come up with on my own). But let me tell you about the tasting! Oh my God! It surpassed any and all expectations I could have possibly dreamed of. It was like sitting down at the most upper echelon restaurant – every course was served with a detailed explanation of the dish, the presentation was AHHHH-Mazing! And, the taste…just wow! I’d gladly have them cater for me every day, if I could. The proof is in the pudding, though. And, when it came time for them to show up and show out at the engagement party – that is exactly what they did. There was no bait and switch; the food was served on a grand scale and – I don’t know how it is possible – it tasted even better at the engagement party. All our guests were so pleased…and so full! Dargin’s Creole Kitchen was an absolute pleasure. I highly recommend them and would gladly work with them again. As a matter of fact, multiple people asked about them during and after the party.

Jazztowne Food Factory helped make my birthday party a very memorable occasion for all involved. The food was delicious, the staff was professional and presentation was impressive. Applause, applause for Andre! His diverse menu and farm to table concept was very accommodating to all of my "picky" eaters. I can't wait to see what he comes up with for my office holiday party!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
