Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a plumber during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If possible, it’s best to set up a virtual consultation or phone call with a plumber near during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can send a message to a professional plumber near you and ask if they are available to video chat or have a phone call. Use that time to discuss the work that needs to be done. Make sure to ask any questions you have about the project. And lastly, ask the plumber how they handle payments and whether they have any specific safety precautions in place to comply with social distancing.

How can I find out if a plumber is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Generally, plumbers are often considered essential service providers. Essential service providers vary from state to state and city to city, however. For the most accurate information, check your official state or city government website to see whether a plumber is considered an essential service in your area.

Read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a plumber when social distancing?

Contact plumbers near you beforehand to see if they can complete the project without entering your home — for example, by entering the garage to fix a broken water heater. If the plumber needs to enter your house to do the job, you should proceed only if both parties feel comfortable with the project. Consider taking extra steps such as waving instead of shaking hands, staying 6 feet apart, using digital payments and sanitizing common areas.

Can I use digital payments to pay for plumbing services?

Some plumbers accept digital payments -- Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, etc. -- for their services. Before you hire a plumber, ask them if they accept your preferred online payment. Many also feature digital payment options on their profiles. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, digital payments are typically considered safer than cash and credit cards.

Does a plumber need to enter my home?

A plumber will need to enter your home to fix plumbing issues like dripping faucets, clogged sinks or toilets and leaky pipes. They might not need to come into your home if the faulty appliance is located outdoors or in the garage. Before you begin the project, contact plumbers near you to find out they will need to enter your home.

Do plumbers offer remote or virtual services?

If you see a profile that states the plumber is offering remote services, contact the plumber before hiring them to see what those services include. Although plumbing is a job that has to be done in-person, you can ask them if they offer virtual consultations or an online walk-through.

What do you do if you have a burst pipe?

First, switch off the water supply to reduce the water damage. You should also turn off the electricity for the part of your home that has sustained the leak, as it can be extremely dangerous if the water comes into contact with an electrical socket. Next, drain the remaining water from your faucets so it doesn’t freeze inside the pipes.

Once you’ve done all of this, search for qualified plumbers in your area and ask them to provide you with a quote.

What happens when a water pipe bursts?

When a pipe bursts, the water can cause indoor flooding and damage your home. If the pipe is in an accessible location, you will likely notice puddles of water right away. However, if the pipe is underground or behind a wall, it may cause reduced water pressure, a sulfur smell or discolored water. All of this can cause significant (and expensive) damage, which is why you should always contact a plumber near you if you suspect your pipes are leaking.

Can a leaking pipe burst?

Yes. A leak in your pipe can build up pressure and wear through the material. Left unchecked, this pressure can cause the pipe to burst. This is why it’s so important to fix your pipes and contact a plumber as soon as you notice a leak — no matter how small or insignificant it may seem.

Smaller leaks are easier and inexpensive to fix, saving you time and money in the long run. In addition, many insurance policies will not cover water damage for pipes that burst due to gradual leaks.

How much does it cost to repair a broken pipe?

The national average cost to repair broken pipes ranges from $120 to $170. Prices can vary depending on the type of damage, whether the pipe is easily accessible, the materials needed and where the pipe is located. For example, an exposed pipe under the sink will likely cost much less than a pipeline in your yard that requires digging.

Your overall cost will also depend on the hourly rate of the contractor. Most plumbers charge between $60 and $65 per hour for standard pipe repair, and up to $95 per hour for complex plumbing work.

A seemingly simple slow drain guest and master sink problem was the cause of an underlying long term issue of bad plumbing from a past plumber. This resulted in a leaking ceiling surprise after Valu Rite thought they were done. Valu Rite Master plumber, David, was able to investigate what the bad plumbing issue was behind the walls and solve it for a long term solution rather than just a cheap patch. Very grateful.

Save me a ton of money after having two other plumbers come out. I appreciate the time he took to actually fix and not prolong a problem so that the customer is constantly dishing out money.

Kevin was very efficient and professional. He was able to resolve our issue within a quick timely manner. We had a small leak in our plumbing in the basement that appeared to have stemmed from a patch job and he was able to replace it with a more permanent solution. Would recommend to anyone needing a professional plumber!

Ed returned my call within minutes and was at our house within an hour. He is very professional and fair in his pricing. He completed the project and left the room he worked in cleaner than it was when he started. Ed will be our go to plumber and on speed dial in the future. I highly recommend him.

Andrew took on the project in the middle, performed accurate and professional troubleshooting, provided accurate and fair price, (compared to multiple master plumber quotes which been received prior to selecting Plumb Masters of Atlanta). Andrew kept constant communication and updates on progress and was able to complete the project within the projected timeframe (including unforeseen issues that came up as he made progress), well done and will use in future.

I would definitely recommend Ransburg Plumbing. He was on time, very professional and very skilled at his job. You never know about the plumbing in older homes until you have a problem. He was very cautious with old water pipes or lines. However, it didn't take him long to come up with a solution that would allow him to get the job done that he came to fix. If you need a plumber you should call Ransburg Plumbing.

They did a great job - our project was over a year ago. We had a neighbor that was a plumber and he indicated he couldn't find the leak and was recommending pulling out all our plumbing from the main line to the house, which is quite a distance. Brought TNT Building for a second opinion and he found it was a leak near the home entrance. This company literally saved us THOUSANDS of dollars. They came out for the quote and completed the work quickly. No more issues and it has been over a year. Thank you!!!!

To say that premium plumbing is amazing would be a insult! They are phenomenal! Josh is so professional. I’ve never experienced such dedication from a hired service professional. He GETS THE JOB DONE! & right!!! I was nervous before hand because of the horror stories I’ve heard about plumbers but these guys ? They get it right. Josh went out of his way to come back and do work that I never initially wanted done. He sent guys ( they were great too ) but they didn’t have the right part. They must have called him and told him and he personally showed up himself and took care of it. I cannot say enough about these guys. Please ask for Josh ( and thanks to his guy can’t remember his name , but he probably brought all my equipment in and he was the sweetest person ever )

Ed performed several plumbing services for us on this visit. The largest job was to install a new single-basin kitchen sink with a center drain and garbage disposal. Our old sink had 2 drains and it was not easy to reconfigure the drain pipe for a single center drain. The most impressive thing Ed did was to patch up the counter top around the sink. We had chosen a drop in sink, rather than the more popular undermount style. The opening for the old sink was much larger than the new sink. Ed adjusted the sink position to minimize the gaps, but there were still significant gaps between the sink and counter on all 4 corners. Any other plumber would have left it like that, reconnected the drain and handed us the bill. Not Ed...Ed filled those gaps in with white caulk, patiently adding layer after layer. Then he added an additional seal of clear caulk at the end. Ed clearly takes pride in his work and is a pleasure to have working in your home. We will definitely hire Ed again.

He came to install my bathtub, he found out that the new bathtub in a box was damaged, so I ask him to return it to Home Depot 5 minutes from my house where I bought it and get another one because I wasn’t at home. He charged me extra $50 for the return and picking up a new one. I paid him extra $50 on top of what we agreed on. He returned it and pick up another bathtub and he came back and installed it. He told me that the shower 🚿 head that another plumber installed need to go up a little bit. So we agreed on him coming back the next day to raise it up for a price we agreed on. The next day he didn’t show up and never call me to let me know that he is not coming. The tiler was waiting for him. I called him he never pick up my calls. I figured out that his behavior is unprofessional. At least answer my calls and tell me that he can’t make it. I will never hire him again.
