Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Reggie is a great, personable and professional personal trainer. He is encouraging and easily able to adjust the workout depending on my energy level on the day. I started training with him when my baseline fitness was really low and though our consistent training I've gotten a lot better. He is also knowledgeable when it comes to nutrition. I would highly recommend training with Reggie.

My personal training experience with Adrian(PT Zone Personal Training)has been so amazing!! I wish that I could rate him as 10 stars!! I started in June of 2015 & my last session is next week(6 months of training) & I can't say enough about how satisfied I'm with working with him. From day one, he has been very professional, always on time for every session, came prepared for all workouts with his own fitness equipment, & always held me accountable!! Not only is he a fitness trainer but is certified in detoxification which is a major plus!! He not only assisted me with dropping over 30 lbs/30 inches but helped me detoxify my body (which in returned assisted me with dropping more body fat/inches). I've not only improved my fitness but improved my overall health. If you are looking for a personal trainer who is dedicated, responsible, accountable, experienced in improving your overall health and professional then you need to contact PT Zone Personal Trainer (Adrian) to meet all of your health & fitness needs!!! I can promise you that you WILL BE SATISIFIED with your outcome!!

Working with Tabari has been a great experience. This was my first time hiring a personal trainer and it's totally been worth the investment. Tabari's approach to training is not just about losing weight, but he really wants to see you win in every area of your health and fitness journey. I've been working with him for almost 3 months and I've lost weight, build on my consistency with workouts, and also had a shift in my mindset surrounding my personal health. I actually enjoy going to the gym now thanks to Tabari!

Gym Jones has been excellent as a trainer so far. This is my first time using a personal trainer and I was hesitant to start but I'm glad I did. The workouts are well rounded and focus on the areas that need the most attention. He takes the time to listen and answer all the questions I have about the process. Just completed my second week but ready to put in the work for the coming weeks.

I had a great experience working with Larry. I hired him to help me get toned and I was pleased with the results. He's also fun to work with. Work got in the way, so I wasn't able to continue. I would highly recommend Larry for personal training.

This is my first time working with a personal trainer. I have been working out for a long time at different gyms and I was always surprised to see how little attention the "personal trainers" paid to their customers. After my first class with David, I was completely convinced that this guy knows what he is doing and cares for his customers. He is flexible with scheduling, which is really important to accommodate my busy schedule. Second, he is looking at your form constantly. He does not care about how much you are doing but how you are doing it instead. He explains to you why is important to correct posture, control your balance, your movements, etc. He is patient and gives you reinforcement when you are doing things right. He praises your progress, no matter how little it is. He gives you tips on nutrition and additional exercises you can do at home on your own. I never look at the clock or watch while I am working out because I truly enjoy my routines with him. I wish I could do it more times a week! Thank you David! You are a "real" personal trainer!

After training with Larry for almost 4 months, I can attest to Larry's professional knowledge, enthusiasm, and result-driven attitude. My goal is to tone, and get fitter. To that end, Larry created a custom whole body workout for me. He guides me in working all parts of my body, arms, chest, legs, and even cardio. He pays attention to my forms closely, making sure I get the most out of my workout, and also not get hurt. I'll definitely be training with Larry for the foreseeable future! If you are on the fence about having a personal trainer to help you achieve your fitness goal, you owe it to yourself to at least have a trial session with Larry!

I recommend Mr. Watson highly without reservations as a youth personal trainer and life coach. For years, I have been frustrated with my son, a bright and athletic 12 year old boy, who performed well below his potential both at school and on the soccer field. His motivation and efforts were terrible. I toyed with the idea of having him see a therapist, but I could not see that working out. I stumbled on Mr. Watson's website, and I thought that he might be exactly what my son needed - a life coach disguised as personal trainer. We met for a consultation. I had no idea about what to expect from a former NFL player, but what I found was an intelligent, delightful man, confident but humble, soft spoken yet articulate. He had trained thousands of youth athletes. As he discussed important differences in training children vs adults, I knew that he was the right man for my son. Mr. Watson's influence on my son has been extraordinary. In just four months of weekly sessions, he has managed to find the right key to unlock a passion that was hidden inside my son. He pushes my son athletically as they discuss sports, academics, and life. The transformation has been a joy to watch. I have seen dramatic improvements in my son's attitude and effort at school, at home, and on the field with tangible results in all three arenas. Mr. Watson truly has the gift and ability to train the mind, body, and soul of youth athletes. I recommend him highly. He has been a blessing to us.
