Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.

How much does it cost to get a new garage door?

A new garage door can add serious curb appeal, not to mention myriad home safety benefits. The cost of a new garage door will vary based on the type of garage door you want and the materials it will be made of. You can purchase a new garage door and have the pros install it for you, but proceed with caution as many installers won’t guarantee their labor if you didn’t purchase the garage door through their company. A new door (without installation) may cost anywhere from $200 to $4,000 or more, depending on size, brand and materials. Here are some examples of average new garage door costs, including installation:

  • Raised-panel, insulated,16x7 garage door: $1,100
    • Without insulation: about $900
  • Raised-panel, insulated, 8x7: $700
    • Without insulation: $550
  • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,500
  • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,000
    • A carriage-house garage door is a barn-style door with handles and hinges; it looks like it pulls out in the style of a barn door but is actually a roll-up.
  • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $3,500
  • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $2,000–$2,200
  • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 16x7 garage door with window in top panels: $5,000
  • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 8x7 garage door with window in top panels: $3,500

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

I'm so pleased I hired Will to repair my garage. Will offered many options for repairs and when I asked about replacing the doors entirely, he took the time to talk about the pros and cons of different door styles. I couldn't be happier with the work he did, the clean up and how wonderful my house looks with the new garage doors. You won't be disappointed hiring Total Garage Repair for replacement of doors or repairs. He's priced just right and you don't feel like you're getting ripped off. I highly recommend you call him first!

“My garage door - perhaps as old as the house built in 1981 - suddenly started acting up. The traction cable on one side slipped out of the roller and it was also frayed. I got a few garage door specialists located using Thumbtack and decided on Genesis Overhead Doors. They came and gave a free estimate on Friday the 9th. Their price was competitive and I scheduled the repair - installing new tension springs and cables - for Tuesday the 13th. Unfortunately and unexpectedly, the garage door got stuck Saturday (10th) around noon. So I called Genesis and they came within an hour and fixed it. The technician was very professional and was well equipped to do the job.

Paid them for 2a new garage doors. They brought very cheap noisy doors. Then very Shoddy work done. Screws so tiny garage door fell off at first use. When Jason showed up he was so rude to my nanny raising his voice and not minding my infant child was with her. We were charged twice for their mistake and never got a Manufacturer's warranty. We will not be using their service again.

Spencer (AkA 2 tall) was great, we had an old rotten wood door, they order a new door at a very reasonable price, was told it was going to be a couple of weeks because the door wasn’t in stock, we were fine with that, he adjusted the spring on the old door because it’s very heavy, couple hours later they called and they found the door, set up a time window, called he showed up within the window, i got a new garage installed, with opener, They did a great job at a great price. Awesome company to work with, I will call them when I ready to replace the shop garage door. Thanks again for the great service,

John was excellent to work with, right from the start. Because one of my garage door torsion springs snapped, and took the garage door openers drive gear with it (which I hadn't realized, but wondered why the chain drive was hanging down a little), my car was stuck inside the garage and I couldn't go anywhere. He responded first to my request, within 10 minutes, and his was close to the lowest of the estimated costs provided to replace the springs. Additionally, he was able to get to my house within 45 minutes (on a busy Monday morning in Atlanta). After assessing the situation, and realizing the garage door opener was also damaged (it was likely as old as the house _ ~12 years old), he made a quick trip to grab a newer version of the chain-drive LiftMaster Opener I already had and had everything completed within 2 hours of his initial arrival. He went into great detail explaining what he found, how he fixed it, and how to maintain the garage door, springs, and new opener to get the longest life out of them.

We had issues with the garage doors not being properly sealed. We had insects coming in from the gaps and winter draft was bad too. We're very to have hired this company. The guy came in for a free estimate and he has everything ready to finish the job within an hour or so. Very pleased with the work, reasonably priced, completely sealed the doors, and even tuned the overall door system for us.

1st Sargeant was the only offer I got whose response indicated that they had read my description of the problem. They indicated a likely cause and a probable solution, which turned out to be the case. The technician was prompt and courteous and quick quickly repaired the door opener. I definitely recommend 1st Sargeant and will use them again when I have garage door problems!

Worse experience I have ever had. Warning! Do not use this company for anything! John is a liar and manipulator. The job he did is by far the worse I’ve seen. Garage door that I received was the wrong door after waiting weeks and it was damaged. John left wood exposed and a list of thing’s unfinished. He likes to drag you along and he doesn’t have an ounce of integrity. Will be reporting this to thumbtack.

Tito responded quickly and came right away to fix my garage door (within the hour of our conversation). He was knowledgeable and even threw in an additional service. The only thing I'd say is that a lower and higher estimate is given and the final payment landed on the higher end. However, I'd still recommend him to others and would use him again!!

Gavin did a great job replacing my garage door opener. He listened when I explained an issue I was having with the opener in bright sunlight and he made an adjustment to mitigate that as well as trimming a metal rod from the old opener mechanism that has been a danger. Gavin was a pleasure to work with and it is clear he enjoys doing his best work.
