Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

I’ve hired Keep It Up Mover three times and each time has been great! They are quick, ensure your items are handled with care, and their prices are fair. The first time they moved me there was a little extra time left so they helped set up my couch. Whenever I have a move or someone I know that’s moving I always recommend them. I’m shocked I haven’t left them a review before.

These guys helped me out on less-24-hrs notice . . . on April 30 — perhaps the busiest moving day of the year. They were able to squeeze me in very late in the day. Showed up when they promised, moved everything quickly, efficiently, and professionally. Unloading went fine — no scuffs, no scratches, everything where wanted it. Best moving experience of my life . . . and I’m 60 year old. Highly recommend!

Errands PCKG & MVNG provided me with one of the best moving experiences I’ve ever had. The crew was punctual, efficient, and surpassed expectations to ensure that my moving experience was as stress-free as possible. They were exceptionally helpful and friendly, which was appreciated being that this was my first time receiving services from a moving company. They made sure all appliances and furniture were properly disassembled, padded, and reassembled after unloading. They worked within my schedule and even got the job done before the estimated time. I would definitely use them again and would recommend ANYONE seeking assistance from a professional moving company to do the same. Thank you for a smooth and quality experience!

Not only did I receive a timely response, but all of my questions were answered, I was given a reasonable price, and the quality and care used for my item was incredible! They were able to move a 1200 pound arcade cabinet including disassembling and reassembling, and the knowledge provided was invaluable! Completely recommend this company!!!

I was in a bind when my contractors couldn’t move our new range from the garage to the house on the last day of our renovation. These guys came the same day and were able to get a 450lb range into the house and even hooked up the gas for me and set it in place. Super thankful and they were all very nice and careful with their work.

I wanted to purchase furniture at Costco...immediately (10% off good until 01/17 only), however when calling movers in my neighborhood nobody was available on such short notice. I did a google search and came across the thumbtack website, submitted my email and phone number and received a call within minutes from Alexander at Rogers Moving Services, LLC. I received a great estimate from Alexander who was cordial, informative and professional; it was a done deal within minutes. I phoned the main office first thing in the morning and spoke with the owner and confirmed the arrangements I had made the previous evening. I then met up with Antonio, Johnny (Johnnie), and David as agreed at Costco; they loaded the truck and were at my apartment within 10 minutes. Do not underestimate this dynamic trio, they are on the quiet side BUT they are fierce problem solvers. How they managed to get my huge, bulky, and heavy pieces of bedroom furniture up my two flights of stairs is beyond me. And they did it quickly and efficiently. I highly recommend their services and if I ever need a moving team again, I will definitely give Rogers a call (and request these gentlemen...if they're not out on their own by then). P.S. A previous reviewer had suggested that the "good reviews" were done by friends/buddies of the Rogers team and that is just not the case here. Well done gentlemen and kudos to you, all of you, but especially David, Johnny, and Antonio!

I’ll start with the good. Despite the hiccups, I still think they were pretty fast considering the aint of things that has to be moved. Each guy was extremely polite with great manners… charming & likable. Made me feel comfortable that they were moving my things. Convinced me they were the best at what they do… which foolishly caused me to let my gaurd down & not thoroughly check behind them. I was quoted one price & the cost was 8x’s the amount. Grant it, I myself didn’t realize how much stuff I had, especially in the basement. I did try to give the scheduler an idea, advised him of all my big items & that there was a garage & basement. He knew there was no way the job would be the small amount of hours he quoted, he just wanted the contact! When the workers got there, I was told several times in a round about way that I lied about the amount of things I had, which was offensive & untrue. Although I don’t believe the average person can list every single item they have at a place they’ve been 5+ years. Especially when the person on the phone is rushing you Thru it. They pressure you to tip them by mentioning it repeatedly & suggesting an actual insanely large amount for each person. Was told if they didn’t finish they would come back for free & complete the job, which was a lie. ThingsI pointed out to take several times were left behind. When I mentioned it I was basically told it was my fault for not doing a thorough walk thru. There were 5 men all asking questions, all moving at once in different directions & 1 me expected to keep up with & watch all of them 🤔. Of course I can’t be every where at once. I paid an extra $450 & when they came back they sent a really small pick up truck & ultimately 1 person. I was again blamed for not saying how much stuff was left as though they didn’t see for themselves the day before. Then I truly belief the head mover & the scheduler are the same person pretending to be 2! They broke the outlet plug to my refrigerator & took a part a lamp that shouldn’t have been taken apart & broke the glass on it. All the boxes marked fragile were underneath other heavier boxes. All boxes marked bathroom & living room were just piled in the kitchen. They were notorious for taking things apart but not putting it back together. Every trip they made to & from the location seemed to take an extra 20-25 minutes than it took me, as if they were purposely adding time to the clock. Next time I’ll use pookie & them
