Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

First impression was very good and we thought they would do a sufficient job with the roof leak we had. The account manager (Seth) came to look at a roof leak we were experiencing. While he was there, he looked at the roof from the ground and listen to what I described as the problem. He agreed that it was in fact in flashing problem, based just off what I told him. He did not go on the roof or in the attic where we are experiencing the leak. After signing the quote, I had to reach out to the company to find out when the work would be done, as I had no communication from them after signing. On the day the work was to be done, the worker who showed up had pictures that were not of our house. Had we not been home, he wouldn't have known what work was supposed to be done. He went on the roof and in the attic and reported it is not the roof leaking, but a window. We declined to have any of the work done as this was not what we agreed to on the quote and will be finding a different company for any future roofing needs.

I live in west Bolingbrook. They repaired (replaced) approximately 22 feet of warped and rotted fascia board that was behind the aluminum fascia that met the roof line of my second story house. Of course, the aluminum fascia was replaced as well because it had to be. Give them a call at: 773.817.6112 I'm glad I did. I give them 4 1/2 stars.

Mr. Rico and his associate did a great job in repairing our soffits and cleaning our gutters. We contacted many roofing companies through Thumbtack and received many estimates, but his was the most reasonable. He went above and beyond what we asked of him, and due to his attention to detail we are planning to use Rico’s Windows and Gutters for other projects in the near future.

We hired them originally for two jobs, both of which went very well. We then reached out to him about some algae stains on our roof. They seemed minor to me, so I inquired about treating them or replacing depending on professional advice. He again sent his son, which I guess was fine, but seemed like we were maybe second tier customers. His son looked at the spots and said he did see some algae stains on a few spots. I then specifically asked him before agreeing to shingle replacement if there was a cleaner or treatment for the algae water than shingle replacement. He specially said "the best thing to do is replace." I thought odd because the stains weren't that large but he was the pro so I agreed. Upon completion, we are so unhappy. The old shingles next to the new ones are very raised and the color, although seemingly a pretty close match on the ground is way different. I feel like I was told a more expensive service was neede when it wasn't. Since, I've done some reading and found that algae treatments for roofs is actually very common and many roofing companies offer it for way less than shingle replacement. I will edit this review after I see how customer service is handled after this, but right now I have a very unhappy husband.

Right from the start, Vasyl has been top notch! I ended up doing a new roof, siding, gutters, fascia, soffit and used his guy for Windows! I would highly recommend him and his crew for any of this work. Everything came out perfect. He handled everything with the village too, which was a real pain. I have referred Vasyl to many friends, coworkers and my own customers.
