Radu did a great job restoring a red oak floor that had not been maintained for over 60 years. Through his expertise in wood flooring and floor refinishing techniques, he advised knowledgeably in selecting stain color and worked tirelessly to address gouges and other anomalies in the original flooring. He and his team were exceptionally professional and courteous throughout the process. As I finish a multi-year rehabilitation of the entire house, visitors comment first and most emphatically about the hardwood floor.

I can't say enough about Michael and the quality of work from him and his team. No remodeling job goes perfect, but he is there every step of the way to make sure the finished product meets expectations. He stands by his work and his number 1 priority is customer satisfaction. He even went out of his way to notice and replace a rotting piece of wood on the OUTSIDE of my house by the sliding glass doors. We had Michael and his team install 900sq ft of red oak with Early American stain. He only uses the Sentico finish which will truly make your floor look like a sheet of glass. He should have some pictures in his portfolio. It is truly beautiful flooring. After the Sentico was applied we noticed a run in it. Michael had to redo the finish so he put us up for the night in a local hotel. He installed all new baseboards and painted them, and installed the wooden vent covers. We also had him install tile. He noticed that the tiles were not all from the same lot which was a good catch because the grout lines were off. I returned them and bought new tile. We hired his team to paint the house as well. All in all it looks like a brand new house on the first floor. I will definitely use Michael for future projects. Thank you Advanced Flooring!

Raul and his team do great work. He was speedy on his response and showed me a property he was working on where I wanted a similar flooring finish. He is responsive and worked with my timeline and requests. There was an issue with the top coat on the floor, but he addressed it immediately and professionally the same day it was noticed.

i was in the process of looking for a company that would do some refinishing well done since i've had a bad expirience before i was having trouble deciding what company to trust. (The previous company gave me a cheap price but also a cheap unprofessional service that was not worth a penny) a friend of my husband had recently installed new hardwood flooring to their condo we went for a visit, and wow! Their floor looked amazing, i right away asked if they had a bussiness card, and how they heard about them, the real estate agent that closed the sale to their condo recomemded that company for flooring as they had done their bussines office, and the results talk for themselfs. After hearing that i called a.m hardwood flooring, martin gave me a free estimate and started and finished the job that same week. So i'm truly satisfied he delivered to me what i wanted which was top quality and a job well done! Totally worth it. Thank you a.m hardwood flooring Katy Standford.

Sam came out and completed several things for this project: Acoil around window and door, trim around roofline, touch up spot painting, caulk around tubs and sinktop, drywall, insullation around hvac ductwork, anchoring of laundry tub, tile work, etc. He had the tools, the manpower, and the skill to complete the job efficiently. He was both reasonable and flexible with pricing. It's no wonder he is in high demand. If you are flexible with timing and reasonable with pricing, Sam and his crew are worth the opportunity. I would use him again.

Jason refinished ~1,500 SF of oak flooring that was really worn and yellowed. He worked with us to help choose a stain and plan the job. We went with a natural satin finish (no stain) and the floors turned out amazing! Great to work with Jason.

I had 2 paths built, one from pre done stone the other brick. I also out lined a pebbled path with stone. They showed up on time, everyday, were polite, helpful, and worked at a steady solid pace. I asked if they could help me dig a hole for a large tree I was having delivered and they gladly stepped up and helped. The paths are beautiful-and solid. I will use them again and highly recommend!

I really liked the way the tile work came out. I've used the company for both interior tile work and exterior stone work. Both times it came out excellent. I get so many compliments on both jobs and would definitely use them again for future projects.

When we were looking to replace our master bedroom carpet & master bath flooring, I was very excited to hear of Floor Covering International mobile showroom. Not knowing exactly what direction I wanted to go, I knew I didn’t have the time for multiple trips back & forth to our local flooring company. It was an absolute pleasure working with Heather & Rob. They were very professionally, showed up on time and ready to help. They took the time to listen to exactly what we wanted and guided us in the right directions. Going over multiple selection that would work best with our furniture, paint choices and natural lighting in our rooms. They were extremely knowledgeable, educating us on the best quality carpet/flooring for our family, yet durable enough for our pets. From start to finish, this was by far the easiest home improvement project. Thank You Rob & Heather!

Chris and his team did work this year to both my basement and remodeling my shower which had a leak in my family room. My family room was stuck in the 1970's and Chris help with giving us the ideas to help make the space more modern and more usable. Chris improved the bones of the space as well helping with insulation in the walls, which was almost non-exitant, sound proofing the ceiling to the bedrooms upstairs, reinforcing the floor above, re-working the electrical to be functional and safer and adding a closet to dead space. Once the structure was solid, the work to improve the aesthetics of the space were beautiful. All done very well with attention to detail. From the wall molding to the stacked stone feature wall (for the TV,) Chris and team could do everything we asked for and all at a reasonable price. We consider this one of the most beautiful spaces in our house and it's become the spot everyone wants to stay in. Separately, he helped us quickly repair/remodel our shower which had a leak (he found was leaking for a couple of years.) He replaced all the support and came up with a seamless design to incorporate it with the rest of the bathroom. He added six more inches with a poured concrete base in the floor and raised the shower head to accommodate taller people like myself. Again, just fantastic work both in construction and in finish. Chris and team are absolutely the nicest and most professional real people you will work with as well. They clean up constantly and always respect the home they are working in. I will definitely be using Chris again in the future.

I have a charming historic house in Hinsdale built in 1976. Was charming except for the basement, which I considered "the dungeon" until Nick recently remodeled it! It has a stone rather than poured foundation, typical of its age, that has been a problem since I moved in 30 years ago. The walls crumbled over time as mortar between the stones disintegrated. It's been very hard to find anyone who knows how to address this problem. Over the years several people put cement on the walls to stop the crumbling, but none ever did a very good job and it needed to be redone every few years. Nick Duta was the only one I met, who seemed to know what to do with it. I was impressed from the start at how extremely detailed and complete his proposal was. His crew spent a number of days just hammering out all the loose motor from the inside walls, and part of the outside, which no one else ever did. They dug a trench outside the house at the worst cracked wall, removing all the disintegrated mortar there, then put layers of waterproof concrete on all the inside walls and gaps in the outside wall, and sealed the outside with additional tar and foam. They also broke through the outside stair-landing concrete and installed a drain, tying it into the inside basement drain to eliminate rain water accumulating outside the door. They then repaired the existing basement floor, cracked due to water damage, putting down wire mesh and a 2 inch layer of concrete over the existing floor and then vinyl tiles. They also replaced all the galvanized plumbing pipes that I had thought was done when the house was remodeled 5 years ago by another company, but learned from Nick that they did not actually do this. Finally they put in some needed electrical outlets and built tasteful looking closets with louvre doors around all the basement utilities (Washer and Dryer, Boiler, Sump pump etc), also installing a new hot water heater and utility sink. Thanks to Nick my basement is no longer a dungeon, and now looks quite nice and is very functional. This was all done at what I believe was a fair cost. It was a pleasure doing business with Nick as he is extremely competent, honest, conscientious and hardworking. He has high standards and can address almost any infrastructure issue. He is easy to work with and attentive to one's concerns. I felt extremely lucky to have found him to do all this difficult work! I would certainly give him my highest recommendation and am hiring him again to rebuild my front staircase, a measure of my satisfaction with his work.

Verafloor was the perfect match to my needs. They did a project for me where I was looking to add a washroom with shower as well as finished concrete floors to a space I'd be using for Airbnb. The us of Concrete is not typical in Chicago and I certainly wasn't going for typical. Still, finding a service that would deliver wasn't easy and anything unique like that could get very expensive. Thankfully I discovered Verafloor and numerous examples of their work online and on Houzz. After calling them, they quickly gathered my specs and priced the project out. I decided to give them the green light as they stood out from the rest and their pricing was reasonable. They delivered beutiful washrooms and floors for me. My Airbnb guests absolutely love the look, feel and modern aesthetic that concrete brings to the space. I've received numerous compliments. Highly recommend Verafloor and it's friendly crew to deliver unique solutions.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
