Mark officiated our wedding in Naperville, IL in July 2016. He offers a great presentation with flexibility to cater to couple's specific needs- all at a very reasonable rate. His prepared introductions and readings were lovely and we were easily able to edit parts to add a more personal touch to the officiant speech. He did a great job helping us coordinate the procession at both the rehearsal and actual ceremony. We highly recommend Mark to officiate your wedding! - Matt and Courtney

We hired Carrie for an intimate wedding of 80 people. Unfortunately our families did not enjoy their pictures being taken so we needed a photographer that was kind of invisible and not intrusive Carrie fit that requirement perfectly. She quickly took the pictures, with professionalism and southern kindness. You immediately felt comfortable with her. Her direction with our large families was swift and quiet.... And she has the ability to bring together a group of people (kids) quickly for a perfect picture. I would hire Carrie again without question. The quality of the pictures made everyone happy. She caught the essence of the wedding and the day perfectly. Our blended family is very happy. Thank you Carrie!

I just got married 8/5/16 and Carl was absolutely amazing! My whole experience with him was great. We had 2 meetings before the wedding. He was very professional and organized which I really liked. The online planning was super easy as well. He walked me through everything step by step and made me less stressed about how everything was going to work. He was always so friendly and happy. The day of my wedding, everything went as planned. He arrived early and had everything set up. The sound was great, the songs were played just right during the ceremony. The only thing I would say was off was that his microphone sounded a little distorted at first when doing the announcements, but he fixed it right away so it was no problem at all! Overall, it was an absolute pleasure working with him. I would like to add that his prices are very reasonable and affordable. We had uplighting that we added too and his whole setup was beautiful. I highly recommend his services for your wedding!! :)

I would highly recommend Emil. Emil is my wedding photographer, where we took pictures at multiple locations in Chicago. I am very happy with the work he had done - quite a few people commented that the pictures look amazing. He is excellent to work with -- negotiations with him were very fair, he delivered our pictures prior to the agreed upon date and he is very cheerful throughout the day

Henry was amazing throughout the entire process of planning our wedding reception, from the first moment I came across his website to his announcing of the last song of the wedding night. He took the time to promptly and enthusiastically respond to all of my questions and emails and check up on us periodically while also getting in touch with our venue representative and photographer. Henry carried that great enthusiasm to the wedding day - from the moment we stepped into the venue we could tell that he used his sharp eye and utmost care to assure that the setting would be perfect. The uplighting was brilliant and our requested monogram that shined on the wall was a delightful touch. The songs that he played throughout the dinner pleasantly surprised our guests and set the mood for the dancing portion of the night. Henry kept the energy going throughout the entire evening, reading the crowd to choose the most appropriate music and accommodating the song requests we had entered in his user friendly customer portal. We loved how he mixed the songs so that they flowed together seamlessly so that ourselves and our guests could dance the night away. We highly recommend A Touch of Class DJ Service for your wedding reception! ~Stephen & Janelle

C2Detail Events - Charlene served as the day off person for our wedding. The package my now husband and I purchased included - active support in vendor management/payments as well as coordination of our expectations from the rehearsal dinner through the church ceremony and reception. C2Detail Events was phenomenal! They left nothing to be questioned and even assisted in areas not covered in our contract to ensure the day came together without a glitch. Charlene, you were amazing! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. August 25, 2012 you became more than a vendor, but a part of our family for events to come. We would highly recommend your services! I was one of Lisa's first clients and I cannot say enough about how wonderful she was during my wedding! I had one previous makeup trial that I did before my engagement session with a woman that was slightly cheaper than Lisa. I got what I paid for unfortunately. I ended up calling Lisa with tears welling up in my eyes and she instructed me over the phone (as she was driving I might add) how to fix my makeup. Of course after that I booked a trial with her immediately. Luckily my engagement photos turned out good. During my trial, Lisa had wine for me and I was very nervous and stressed about my prior makeup issues. She constantly asked what I liked or didn't like about colors, techniques, looks, etc. She did a great job of listening to what I wanted then using her professional skills to make the look work for my complexion, face, and occasion. At one point I asked for a specific lip color and she told me she would try it on one side and then a color she recommended that was similar but slightly softer....she was right and I went with that lip color. On the day of my wedding, there was some miscommunication on my part (as I was juggling a MILLION things) and I told her the wrong hotel....that was 40 minutes away.....so bad, i know. However, Lisa was literally at my hotel room door in 20 minutes, cool as a cucumber after driving like 140mph. She did a fantastic job! I had a bridesmaid that literally NEVER wears makeup and a bridesmaid that is a makeup whore and tries every trend possible. Lisa was able to accommodate them all and they all loved their makeup, even the girl that never wore make up was ecstatic about her look (she ended up showing her wedding makeup girl the same look for her wedding...her wedding was 4 hours away otherwise she would have booked Lisa). Lisa did a great job of managing time and also accommodated doing my mother's makeup. Lisa made sure I knew how to touch up my makeup throughout the day, however all I needed was some lip touch up before going down the aisle. I should also add I got married at the end of August in Chicago (super humid) but my airbrush stayed beautifully! Since then I have used Lisa multiple times for weddings that I was a guest at and other special occasions and I have loved my make up each time. I am excited to try her spray tans and wished she had that prior to my wedding. Any bride is lucky to have her on their glam squad!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a wedding event coordinator do?

Pulling off a large, complex wedding or an elegant, small affair requires juggling myriad details, including the officiant, food, drink, wedding cake, entertainment, transportation, rehearsal dinner, photography, equipment rentals, venue reservations and more. A wedding event coordinator can help you keep track of these details, overseeing the planning process and managing everything on the day of your wedding. Each wedding coordinator (and wedding) is different, but in general you can expect an event coordinator to:

  • Help you devise a realistic wedding budget and hold your vendors to it.
  • Map out a master plan that includes all of the details including ceremony music, favors, the guest book and more.
  • Suggest ceremony and reception locations that fit your wedding size, budget and vision.
  • Suggest florists, photographers, bands, caterers and other vendors that fit your budget.
  • Negotiate vendor contracts for the best deals.
  • Create a timeline for the day of the wedding that includes each vendor and member of your wedding party.
  • Mail invitations and track RSVPs.
  • Answer questions about wedding etiquette and current wedding trends.
  • Manage the wedding day from supervising vendors and setup to handling last-minute emergencies.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

What is a wedding planner?

A wedding planner is a professional service provider whose job it is to organize and execute all the details of a couple’s wedding. A wedding planner can be contracted at any stage in the wedding planning process to help to any degree the couple is willing to pay for. Wedding planning is similar to event planning in that a planning team handles the coordination of multiple wedding elements including catering, venue, guests, entertainment, decor, transportation and more. Anyone who has ever been involved in a wedding can confirm that wedding planning is hard work. Experience brings wisdom when it comes to avoiding or resolving day-of challenges. There is no legal regulatory body that oversees or certifies wedding planning as an industry. Anyone who chooses can call themselves a wedding planner. When looking for a wedding planner, be sure to read reviews, and make smart hiring decisions by asking about licenses and insurance.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
