Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does computer repair cost?

The cost to fix your computer or laptop will depend on the extent of the repair and the labor rates in your area. For example, a repair service may charge $100 to fix virus or malware issues or $320 to fix a cracked or damaged screen. On average, computer repair technicians charge $60/hour for their services. However, hourly rates can range from $45-$90

To find out exactly how much it will cost to fix your desktop, laptop, Apple or PC computer, request cost estimates from computer repair specialists near you.

How much does computer repair cost per hour?

It costs an average of $60 per hour for computer repair. Hourly rates range from $45-$50 on the low end and $85-$90 on the high end.

Get free cost estimates from computer repair specialists near you so you’ll know exactly how much you should expect to pay.

Who can fix my computer?

If your computer needs repairs, hire a technician who has experience with your computer’s model and brand. Ideally, the pro you choose should have certifications, training and/or a degree in a related field.

Look for top-rated, qualified computer repair services in your area on Thumbtack.

Is it worth replacing the motherboard on a laptop?

If your laptop’s motherboard was damaged by physical impact, liquid, heat or electrical damage, you may need to replace it or buy a new computer. You should consult computer repair experts near you to determine if replacing your laptop’s motherboard is worth the cost. Compare the price quotes you receive with new laptop prices, and decide which option is the most cost-effective.

What should I do before sending a computer in for repairs?

Before you send your computer to a technician to fix it, take the following precautions:

  • Make sure you hire a reputable, top-rated professional to handle the repairs. Look at past photos of work they’ve completed and read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.
  • Back-up your data. To ensure you don’t lose the data on your computer, back-up your files to an external hard drive.
  • Ensure you have access to important information. If you need to access certain files or information from your computer, make sure you can access that information through a cloud storage system or external drive.
  • Erase sensitive information. If you have files (documents, photos, etc.) that contain sensitive information about your finances, accounts, passwords, etc., delete them before you bring your computer to a repair shop.
  • Log out of your accounts. Make sure you’re logged out of your bank, social media and other accounts.

Is it cheaper to replace a hard drive or buy a new computer?

Buying a new hard drive is almost always cheaper than buying a new computer. If you suspect you need to upgrade or replace your hard drive, ask a computer technician to diagnose your device (and request a cost estimate if the culprit is indeed the hard drive).

Is it worth fixing a computer?

It depends. If the damage is severe, you might be better off buying a new computer than spending hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on repairs. Always get price quotes from a few computer repair services near you, and compare those estimates to desktop and laptop prices. If it's cheaper to fix your computer,  consider doing so. But if it's cheaper to buy a new device, that's probably your best option.

Should I repair or replace my computer?

To determine if you should replace or repair your computer, consider the following:

  • Has your warranty expired?
  • Is your computer old and out of date?
  • Is the cost to fix your computer 50% or more of the cost of replacing it?
  • Before it broke, was your computer working slowly and inefficiently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s probably time to replace your computer. When in doubt, consult a technician for their expert opinion.

How many years does a laptop last?

Depending on its quality, age, condition and maintenance, a laptop may last only a few years or up to seven years. Of course, your laptop may last longer or shorter depending on how well you take care of it. If you think your laptop needs repairs, don’t procrastinate — hire a technician to look at it before the damage becomes irreparable.

Excellent service. Michael's ability to accommodate my unorthodox work schedule really helped. He was able to get back to me the same day I dropped my computer off for repairs that he was able to recover my data I thought I lost. His rates were very fair and reasonable. He was also able to explain what went wrong and why and what he did to fix it. I would strongly recommend him for any future computer repairs.

Mark is terrific. He is very knowledgsble. As my computer crashed, he has been very patient with me (a non - knowledgeable senior) and goes to great lengths to understand your problem. You are lucky to have him as your repair professional.

I highly recommend Tom. He communicated me throughout the repair, his fee was very reasonable, and he finished the job as quickly he could. I wasn't sure my computer could be fixed but it's back to being fully functional! He fixed my mac for half the price that the mac "geniuses" wanted because they claimed that the water damage was beyond repair.

Mr. McDowell from DM Tech Solutions met with me at my convenience, quickly assessed the issues causing my computer problems and repaired everything in almost no time. And, his pricing was much more than reasonable. I hope I don't have any other issues, but if I do, I'll definitely use their service again!

I don't know jack about computers, and was a little worried about running into the kind of scenario like when you take your car to the shop and they take advantage of your lack of knowledge and upcharge you. BUT, I ran the communication I was having with Striker Technologies through a whole bunch of very tech savvy friends, and they are all convinced he absolutely knows what he's talking about. I wish my repair had been cheaper, but I'm the dumbass that spilled a drink on my laptop, not him. The price couldn't be avoided. Throughout the repair Striker Technologies was extremely communicative and gave me constant, thorough, updates. I've also been assured that if any subsequent problems pop up related to that repair within the next year I can bring it back at no price.

After a disastrous and messy office repair, our computers were left caked inside and out with dirt and grime. Nerd Rangers quickly responded to our post on Thumbtack to help clean up the mess. Although cleaning is not one of their core services, they offered a well-planned and cost-effective solution and sent me a quote. Shuaib arrived promptly for our appointment, was pleasant and very knowledgeable. He meticulously cleaned our machines inside and out so that they appear brand new again. I would definitely use Nerd Rangers again, and would recommend them to others for any tech needs.

Not having much knowledge about computers I went seeking professional help. It started off as simple lag that got worse. After reaching out to Mark Levine a representative of M&H. He seemed very confident he would be able to help me. Me not having much previpus experience with computers. Trusted him. I gave him a functional but slow computer. He held it for a couple of weeks offered solutions. After many back and forth and getting the run around. The hard drive failed (In his possession) he returned it not functional he also gave me excuse after excuse as to why it wasn't his responsibility or his fault. I now had a dead hard drive out 60$ and completely denied responsibility. After speaking to.other similar service companies I was able to surmise he was responsible after bringing this to his attention he agreed to replace the hard drive and rectify the situation his company (as "professionals) is responsible for. I received many excuses where he postponed the repair. To receive an aggressive and rude email backing out on his offer to rectify the situation. I am happy to send anyone interested copies of the emails exchanged this is not how companies do business taking advantage and manipulating consumers. Please email I would be happy to prove to you each claim I am making against Mark Levine. I have all emails from start to finish.
