Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What type of flooring can you put over ceramic tile?

You can put carpet, laminate or engineered hardwood flooring over ceramic tile. Vinyl flooring can go over tile as long as the surface of the ceramic is even and smooth, without any crevices or bumps.

If this is your first time installing flooring over existing ceramic tile, consider hiring a tiling professional to do the work instead and avoid damages.

What's the best flooring for basements, kitchens and bathrooms?

When installing flooring in your home, keep in mind that some materials are better suited for certain rooms while others are not. Use this guide to help you make the best decision for your home.

Best Flooring for Basements

Basement flooring should be highly resistant to moisture, as many basements are below grade. Choosing the best flooring for basement spaces depends on what they’ll be used for. For example:

  • An epoxy basement floor is a durable finish for concrete.
  • Vinyl basement flooring is generally waterproof or water-resistant.
  • Laminate floors can be an affordable option, but they’re often not 100% waterproof.
  • Ceramic tile floors are also water-resistant.

If your basement isn’t moist, carpet tiles are also an option — just make sure to use a moisture barrier.

Best Flooring for Kitchens

Kitchen flooring does more work than almost any floor in the house, so you’ll want to choose a durable floor. The following are among the best flooring types for kitchens:

  • Porcelain tiles can be fashionable, moisture-resistant, and cost less than stone or wood to install.
  • Vinyl flooring can withstand dents, is generally inexpensive and it’s easy to install.
  • Linoleum flooring can be durable, easy to maintain and affordable.
  • Wood flooring could be damaged by dropped pots and pans, furniture and pets. However, hardwood and engineered wood floors in kitchen spaces are still popular among homeowners.

Best Flooring for Bathrooms

Bathroom flooring must withstand high moisture levels while also being comfortable on bare feet. Here are some of the best flooring options for bathrooms:

  • Porcelain tiles are generally comfortable, waterproof, stylish and less costly than stone or wood.
  • Vinyl flooring is waterproof, cost-effective and can imitate wood convincingly.
  • Natural stone can be expensive, but it’s typically hard and durable.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor and a concrete floor?

The time it takes to install hardwood and concrete floors varies based on the condition of your current floors, the size of your floors and other factors. Use the following information to gauge how long your flooring installation might take.

Time it takes to install a hardwood floor: Several days to 2+ weeks

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation.

During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Subfloor repair can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins.

The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, staining takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied.

For a more accurate timeframe of how long it will take to install hardwood floors in your home, reach out to one of the best flooring companies near you.

Time it takes to install a concrete floor: 2 days to 1 week

Installing concrete floors can take anywhere from two days to a week, depending on what you need done. Some of the factors that can impact how long it will take to install concrete floors are:

  • The size of the space
  • The stain or finish
  • The condition of your existing floor
  • Whether you want intricate, simple or no designs
  • The overall complexity of the project

To get an accurate estimate of how long installing concrete floors will take for your home, speak to a concrete contractor near you.

What is the best hardwood floor?

The best hardwood floors are made from durable, hard species like oak, maple and cherry. Solid hardwood is typically the better choice over engineered wood because you can sand out the scratches multiple times. However, engineered hardwood is better equipped for humid households.

Consider buying prefinished hardwood flooring, which can be more durable and simplify the installation process. Plus, prefinished wood often comes with a warranty from the factory.

Bamboo is another popular option, though be aware that some might not be as eco-friendly as others due to its production process. Some of the popular hardwood floor brands are Bruce, Carlisle and Lumber Liquidators.

To ensure you choose the best type of wood flooring for your home, hire one of the top hardwood floor installation professionals near you.

Do engineered wood floors scratch easily?

Yes, but engineered wood flooring has the same susceptibility to scratching as hardwood flooring. Engineering wood floors have a layer of real wood on top. For this reason, engineered hardwood reacts the same way that regular hardwood does to scratching. If you don’t mind a few character marks on your floor like small scratches and dents, this is not a problem. However, engineered wood can be sanded down and resealed if the damage gets too great.

Find a hardwood floor professional in your area who can tell you more about the pros and cons of engineered wood floors.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

The national average cost to install flooring is $5,500, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 . Your cost can be much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select, the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed.

Here are some examples of floor installation costs, depending on the material:

Is it worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist?

Unless you have plenty of experience installing the type of floor you want, it is worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist.

The first reason is tools — pros have them, and they know how to use them. Without the proper experience, there is a high risk of injury with nail guns and power saws. A good pro also works quickly, saving you time that you could spend doing other things.

Finally, a pro gets you past options paralysis by helping you decide the best flooring for different rooms and areas of the home.

Very polite, professional and punctual. I asked for a quote and he was at my house within the day and very responsive with all messages. He was very honest in telling me that it would not be a good idea to level my cracked concrete sub floor (which is what i wanted). And I'm grateful that he was honest with telling me what could and could not be done with my floor. I've dealt with previous floor installers who tell you they will be there and they never show up or even respond. Jordan has great customer service. Thanks

My situation was a different one- but the quality of work and professionalism is highly lacking from the job that they completed. Between the “main floor guy” Jeremy and the 3 additional people that he had with him, each on different days, the quality of work performed, the amount of rework that needed and still needs to be completed, to the payment of the project- everything was and is subpar for any professional company. Flooring was to be laid throughout the home, minus the master bedroom and one small room in the front of the house. This was supposed to be a seamless install (no transition strips between rooms) and was to be completed within 3-4 days. Well 12 days later, the work is done but it is TERRIBLE! By terrible, I mean it is terrible! It was a laminate install, so the pieces need to be “snapped” together, if not done correctly there is a “lip” or small raise in the flooring plank. This is just one of the problems throughout the flooring install. There are also damaged pieces of laminate flooring that were left installed in the kitchen, there are gaps and “lips” throughout the floor. In some areas the baseboards do not meet with the floor. The quarter round in the kitchen was not cut correctly so there are now gaps showing to the slab, nothing “sealing” the floor in front of the dishwasher, and a huge gap between the dishwasher and the cabinet next to it. The baseboards were not cut correctly in some areas and caulking was used to “fill the gap”, in which it is still completely noticeable. In the laundry room, the quarter round was laid wrong along one wall and in the utility room, a space next to the furnace just was not replaced at all, until the owner Brad came up with a solution instead of correcting it the right way. Let alone the “main floor guy” wouldn’t show up until 12:30 or later, transitions were placed where there should have never been a transition such as in between the kitchen and laundry room, as well as from the hallway to one bedroom. Also this company only accepts ACH Bank withdrawal or checks, but failed to discuss any payment options prior to being hired. It’s 2020, get with the times please. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!

I can’t say enough positive things about the work Edgar and his team did. It began with a very quick response to my inquiry and continued through the estimate and actually getting the work complete. His knowledge of what type of flooring would work best for my space was invaluable. If you are looking to get flooring done, look no further than Edgar and his team.

Can't say enough good things about Phil and his company. He made several trips to our house to show us a variety of samples to make sure we got the floor we wanted at a price that was within our budget. We left for an out of state wedding on the day they started our install, and we came back a few days later to beautiful floors. Furniture and appliances were put back in original location, and besides the terrific workmanship, we were especially pleased with how well they cleaned up after themselves. We had 1000 square feet of hardwood laid, and it truly gave our home a totally new 'look'. I would highly recommend the Indianapolis Floor Store to anyone that needs hardwood floors installed, and will certainly recommend Phil to our friends. Ronnie was able to start on our vinyl flooring the day after his estimate and had reasonable prices. We were actually going to be out of town, but we entrusted him into our home while we were gone. No issues and it was nice to come home to everything being done! He fixed our entry door as well. Everything was done in a timely manner. After he placed the flooring, we noticed a bump underneath a couple days later. He came the next day and fixed it. Would recommend!

I don't even have words to express how amazing David Schwartz is, in terms of professionalism, knowledge, skill, and astonishing energy. I do not say this lightly or without rehab knowledge; I have been serially renovating for years. David Schwartz to the rescue, of a job that got abandoned. It appears he is typically very busy but I managed to catch him with a one day break within a week. He stepped in and had the job entirely finished by noon! I couldn't believe it. Upon asking a couple of questions - since I love learning from the consummate pros how things are supposed to be done - he also gave me some very good knowledge about how this sort of job (had not done this specific flooring and leveling before) is supposed to be done, start to finish, which will help me in the future. He gave me some additional greatly appreciated advice about tiling a fireplace. I'm floored (no pun intended). It looks amazing, and I definitely have a new go-to flooring professional. He's already coming back in a few weeks to install my new kitchen flooring. Thanks so much, Mr. Schwartz! You rock.
