JP is extremeley knowledgable and well prepared. He starts by giving your child a practice test to see where they are at initially .He then works out a game plan of homework and tutoring that hits the areas your child needs help with. He is very patient and explains everything very well. My daughter felt comfortable with him and believes he has helped her feel prepared for her first shot at the SAT. He also has the student write several essays that he grades so that it becomes second nature to the student on test day. I highly recommend him as a tutor for your child regardless of how well the student will score they will at least be prepared going in . It's up to them to do the homework and spend the time preparing to increase their chances of succeeding.

Let me help your child unlock the mathematical mysteries of the world! We're all individuals! Why teach only one way? Everyone has a unique learning style. When introduced in a fun, nonthreatening way, math will become your child's new best friend, really. I have over 20 years of experience working with children. As a freelancer, I developed educational content for several math and reading programs for Pearson Education, the parent company of Scott Foresman. I know I can help your child!

My motto is: "With each concept I did not know, there's always a journey." Even if I don't know something, I will strive to learn it. This motto has proven to be very invaluable even early on throughout high school, as I received a full-academic scholarship to a well-respected and prestigious university. It's an important quality for someone to know a lot, but I find that the most important quality is an undying motivation to help a student get better and to find a common ground so that a student can relate and retain the information. This is what I bring to the table. As a graduate of Transylvania University, I understand the struggles that school life presents. Either the teacher doesn't explain things in a way the student understands, or the student happens to lack the motivation necessary to be successful in that class. Keeping this in mind, I will provide the best structure, information, and strategy(ies) possible to give your student ultimate success in their math class. I have tutored various levels of math at various ages/abilities. My tutoring first started when I was in high school in an after-school program. Mainly, I would help with Algebra 1 and 2 and geometry. Occasionally, I would venture over to the adjacent middle school to help with pre-algebra-related issues. When I entered college, I sought purpose. I decided to continue tutoring. After that, I have been tutoring for college students at Transylvania University, helping with more and more subjects, as I progressed through my major (mathematics). Currently, in addition to high-school-level subjects, I can help with Calculus I, II and III, linear algebra and most mathematics topics in general.

I tutor children in grades K-4th in Math. I start with the basic concept and then work on the more abstract. For example, I have the child use counters and then move to fingers and then to more abstract. I have a BS Degree in Education from University of Louisville. I worked at Sylvan Learning Center for two years. I am now working by helping children with their homework in the YMCA CEP after-school program. I also help children with reading skills. I tutor children in grades 1st-3rd in reading. I use phonics whenever I can and mix in some games to reinforce the learning.

I'm a former teacher of middle school math and science including algebra with emphasis on what I call "antique algebra" concentrating on the relationship of numbers rather than results on a calculator. I am also a licensed Real Estate Broker.

I can tutor young children in algebra, pre-algebra, geometry and such topics. I use a wide variety of methods to achieve my goals of growing the students' abilities in math and their confidence and drive to learn.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs.
