I could not be happier with Yotsy! As a first time homeowner, I had no idea where to start with a home painting project. Yotsy made it incredibly easy, helping to refine my ideas, finding the best paint for the job and being incredibly fast and responsive. He responded to my quote request within minutes, came the same day and started the next morning. He did a huge job efficiently and at a GREAT price compared to the other quotes I received. I’ll be calling him for all my home painting projects in the future.

Signature Design Interiors staged my home in One Loudoun and did an amazing job! They brought in furnishings, art, area rugs, linens, and accessories to highlight my home's best features. The turnaround time between requesting their help and the completed project was just a couple of days. I highly recommend the team at Signature Design Interiors for staging as well as decorating and remodeling. They are top notch!

Michelle is a master of her craft. We started with a small project where she totally personalized my kitchen so it's all me! As a finishing touch, she used a bird theme (I love, love my birds). On one wall, Michele tastefully scripted "Live, Love, Laugh, Chirp". Everyone thinks her work is fantastic - especially me. After that, I asked Michelle to give my Living Room a makeover. Originally, it was not attractive or functional. She brought my built-in shelve to life with new paint & the perfect accessories. We added a new furniture and draperies. She even did a subtle Tuscan like faux paint that looks incredible. Highly recommend Michelle to all of my friends.

We hired Shane to add a bedroom in our already finished basement. He won the bid on price, but also because he had really good ideas about how to reconfigure the space, which made it much more useful, and also attractive. He added a built-in shelf to one area, which is really beautiful and enhances the space tremendously. Based on Shane's work in the basement, we hired him to tear a wall out in our dining room, and add a door to another room in order to create a home office. We are planning to continue with more renovations, and intend to hire J&S for everything. They are easy to work with, and communicate clearly about changes of scope, and any issues that come up. We are very happy with the quality of the work as well.

I don't write many reviews, but I wanted to go out of my way to make sure to to write a detailed one for Yosif and Smart House Remodeling. I think I am uniquely qualified to give a very thorough review, as I hired Yosif and his team to do a basement renovation covering over 1,400 square feet. This was a big job, and below you can see some of the before and after photos from a few of the rooms. I'm a pretty particular client; I'm an engineer and pay attention to the details and quality of work that I get done and was very pleased with the outcome on this. I hired Yosif after getting approximately 8 (!) different bids for this job. So that shows you what he was up against. I think the typical experience with working with Yosif is likely as follows: you have him out for an estimate, he has some good ideas about the work that you may have not considered, he gives you a prompt estimate with very reasonable prices, and then you hire him to start the job. Once work is well underway, you realize you've got something really great going and then start creating new contracts to do all kinds of additional work with him--work that perhaps you've put off because you dreaded having to go through finding a quality contractor for each additional project. In my case, I started off with vinyl plank flooring over 1400 sq. feet (spot-leveling & demo needed), with some switch relocation and other electrical work (outlet additions, ceiling box), recessed lighting installation, and HVAC vent installations. By the end I had added significant drywall patching (including closing holes in attic), replacing a huge wood paneled room with all-new drywall, installed an attic ladder, replaced a rear door (including new framing & storm door install), repaired a front door, had a custom divider wall built to hide an HVAC unit, had soundproofing insulation put in, multiple in-wall access panels, minor plumbing, and I could honestly go on. I got an amazing amount done beyond what I originally though was possible for my budget. Yosif is careful to make sure that you are OK with the finished product on each phase of the work that is being done, and is willing to redo things that are not quite right. Each job is properly finished too, with the small things like priming on drywall (plenty skip this!), clean up, and material disposal. I found him very trustworthy as well and had no issue with him doing work at my home regardless of whether I was there or not, yet he was also respectful of my schedule. I would also consider him skilled at a very broad range of construction areas/topics, which if you've hired a number of contractors before you probably know that is not always the case. Although I do want to note that I found his drywall work especially good. I don't think many people would assume that he has 10+ years of experience, but it shows in what he is capable of an his approach to solving the problems that you encounter (and you will always find something interesting when you start opening up walls!). In short, I would gladly recommend him without any reservations.

Working with Damian was a sincere pleasure. His professional experience was invaluable when it came to understanding my needs for my new home design. He was able to show me my home design in his very cool 3D computerized program. My house came to life when I saw it! He is an amazing architect with vision whom I would strongly recommend to anyone who wants to create their new home or project.

The J-Team has done 2 projects for me. A finished basement (1500 sq ft, 3 bedrooms, 2 bath) and a complete single family home (approx. 2000 sq ft). Both jobs were OUTSTANDING! Trustworthy, punctual, detailed and reasonably priced are words I would use to describe the J-Team. The only person I'll use.

My living room was a mismatch of minimal furniture and no decor. Maria helped me pull together my living room by rearranging my furniture, adding a beautiful lounge and finding me a large piece of art to pull together everything. She worked with my budget and time frame.

Dawn was a delight. She read our style and designed something that totally complimented our home and our family. She came to our home, measured, brought samples, met me on my time and had subcontractors for painting etc that were reliable and pretty darn amazing. She delivered on time and on budget and I am happy to call her a friend. Highly recommend!!!

I hired New Vision Properties Construction Services to remodel my kitchen. It badly needed work and had to be completely gutted. New Vision Properties provided outstanding service and high-quality work--they finished my project on schedule, kept me appraised of progress and were very transparent about costs. Richard and his crew were courteous and very professional. My new kitchen looks great, and I plan to re-hire them for my next remodeling project.

Angela is so talented and gave our house a much needed make over. She is great to work with. In our first meeting, I showed her some ideas and talked about my goals. When she came back with her recommendations, I was amazed - she totally "got" my aesthetic and just completely nailed it. Our home was transformed into a beautifully designed and functional family household. We just bought a new house and I am going to work with Angela again on a total design make over. She is fantastic!

Homequest did an excellent job on my home projects in Washington DC. I have a 100 year old row house and Scott and Asha did a great job managing a project to build a new powder room and renovate an old walk-in closet into an modern office space. Scott and Asha were very responsive with questions throughout the project and their prices were very fair. I would have no hesitation in hiring them again on any home construction project.

The Best! Wonderful! Excellent! Easy! Stress free! Working with Dana was the best experience I have ever had! She provided a service I didn’t know I needed. Being pregnant with my first child, of course I wanted it ALL! I wanted to create a room that was inviting, soothing, and different from every other room in our home. When I initially met Dana, I was simply going into her store to look at a chair and furniture samples...I got sooooo much more! It was a Saturday afternoon on a beautiful day and I wasn’t in a hurry. Dana was working with a client when I went into the store. She was so knowledgeable, friendly, calm, patient, accommodating, and most importantly—appeared to be in tune with her client’s ideas. I found myself enjoying the chair I came to see and watching her work. I have never waited with ease to talk to someone, but that’s exactly what I did. When it was my turn, Dana gave me her undivided attention. I walked in there wanting to view a chair and walked out with a concept for my nursery, furniture picked out and an appointment for a full room design. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Dana was responsive, knew what I was looking for, friendly and extremely open. She was also very timely. I absolutely love the nursery. It is the best space in the house! It looks like a picture out of a magazine. Dana introduced me to vendors I had never heard of. Everyone who comes to visit loves the nursery. And, my baby enjoys his room too. He calms down upon sitting in the room and we enjoy mommy/son time. Thank you Dana for helping me prepare for my first child and giving me an unforgettable experience!

Scott and his team did a Tom of home improvements for me and my family at our river home. When he showed up I had a laundry list like replacing toilets, drywall and sinks to outdoor lights and screens. They prepared my home for sale and they were able to complete it all. They arrived when then said and did an excellent job, I highly recommend SOS Improvements!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
