Been training at Fitness Stop for more than a month with Garid, and the results are showing. I decided I needed training after two injuries during long distance running. Garid was able to help me with my flexibility & mobility , and as a result I do not get sore after running like I used to before I started training.

Absolutely exceptional in every single way. Elin is without a doubt one of the most positive and supportive coaches. He listened closely to my goals and selected the perfect trainer for me. Trainer Alek is an amazing person who customized a program for me that is challenging, but not overwhelming. Working with Alek is very motivating and he pushes me to work harder to reach my goal in a very subtle way, so that a hard workout still is enjoyable and fun. Every week he emails me a workout summary and an overview of where I’m currently standing in my training. Elin is also tracking my progress and he reaches out every week to check up and see if everything is working out to my satisfaction. Elin and his team are professionals who truly enjoy helping people like me reach their goals. Customer satisfaction is highly regarded and they work with you to accommodate your schedule and budget. I have worked with different trainers and studios in the past, but Elin and his team are taking personal training to a whole new level.

My experience with TakeFlight Fitness was a success! I was skeptical at first about the goals I wanted to achieve and if they would happen within the 7 sessions that I scheduled. But to my surprise, the sessions with Paul helped me to learn about dieting, staying consistent and keeping positivity that you can always achieve any goal you desire. I didn't think I'd be able to gain any muscle mass and weight but I did and I managed to meet my weight goal of 140. Since then, I've been very consistent in maintaining my diet and sticking to my workout routines at home and in the gym. Everyone in my surroundings have also noticed the improvement in my body structure which lets me know that my experience with TakeFlight is recognized. My biggest take away from training with TakeFlight Fitness is that you have to understand it's not an easy job for fitness and there's a lot of scientific background to know how the body works. However, if you seriously want to change your lifestyle for the better, you'll do whatever is possible to reach that goal.

I came across Cornelius about five months ago when I was looking to do some strength training following a running injury. I've been seeing him about once a week and have really enjoyed the sessions. The first session we talked abut my fitness goals, and following that, he has put together a series of excellent sessions that focus on core strength, upper body work, and some agility. I've definitely noticed a difference to my overall fitness level, mainly through the sessions, but also through using the different exercises he has shown me at my gym at work. He is very focused on correct technique which has also helped me to recover from my injury, and remain injury free. I really appreciate his approach to the sessions, which is fairly low key and down to business, but in a good way. No yelling and high fives thats for sure. In terms of price, I didn't really do any research but I think the cost per-session is about average for trainers here in DC. Well worth the investment and I'm intending to keep going.

I've known Kristin both professionally and personally for the better part of a decade now. She is one of the happiest, most energetic, outgoing human beings I've met. She's dependable and motivating. Simply, Kristin is the type of person you want to surround yourself with - especially while trying to achieve personal goals. I have always been an active person but hit a wall with workouts as my job become more time consuming. I have limited time and was looking for the best "bang for my buck." I was also simply bored doing the same routines time and time again. And to add to that, I was trying to loose body fat and build muscle... while training for a long distance running race. Not the easiest task, but I knew exactly who I was going to for help... At the time, Kristin was in FL, and I was living in VA. We setup a consultation and she immediately helped create an awesome plan tailored to my needs and goals. It was exciting to have something new and planned! The new moves were practical, not intimidating (but VERY challenging), and they were all planned and mapped out, so they didn't require too much brain power. I felt like I could just take the workout sheet she wrote for me and go to the gym without thinking, which was a huge bonus for me. I followed Kristin's custom 12 week plan and followed some of her nutrition suggestions. Did I do every workout or complete every rep? Nope. Did I rule out all junk food or wine? Nope. But by following her advice even 80% of the time, I lost over 2% body fat and PR-ed in a 10 mile race. Even being states away, Kristin was my accountability partner. I cannot give her a higher recommendation and by investing in her professional expertise, you'll be thrilled with that same investment to yourself... She helps gets you RESULTS!

He has a great website that not all trainers on here had and he I think he knows what he's talking about even more than the most professional trainers! He is the perfect trainer!

Rashid is a great trainer who cares a lot about the well being of kids and will do anything to see you succeed in life!!! 1. I learned how to push myself when things got hard and I also I was taught how to fix my running technique with running hills forcing me to bring my knees up when I run. 2. I benefited a lot with the program because everything I did at a young age I already knew how to do it when I started playing high school football like doing the ladder drill and change of direction moments. Rashid would stay after practice with us and work on the things i needed to improve on for me I needed to work on tackling so I would stay after with him to work on it

Chris is professional, educated in his field, and over all positive person. Bowerhouse gym is clean and welcoming and there's always unquie workout routines. Highly recommended. Now even my boyfriend has started personal training with Chris too.

I trained with Matt for my first “personal training” experience. I went in knowing what I wanted to improve and work on, also hoping to get a better understanding of my body and how I can improve my lifestyle to make it a bit healthier. I was a bit nervous since I wasn't sure what to expect. I was thinking the worse like: he was going to be really hard and tough on me, make me feel anxious or awkward, or even not feeling comfortable at all. That was not the case! He was great! He has a wonderful character and is super nice. I felt very comfortable during the session which was one of the most important things for me. I can tell he knows exactly what he doing and is very knowledgeable which made me feel like I was in the right hands. Fitness seems like his passion and he keeps up on the latest nutritional research and news. He is also very aware of my goals which we are strongly working on, my habits, metabolic type, and physical abilities. Why did I wait so long to meet him and start training? It is so much more beneficial than going to the gym and doing the same old work out each time. He provides different techniques and settings each time which I loved! Really great investment-not just to improve your lifestyle and physique, but to also gain a great friend in the process!

If you want to change your body, live a healthier life and not hate your time in the gym…work with Gladiator Strong Fitness. Shawn is one of the best in the business of personal training. He doesn’t go through the motions and he’s extremely knowledgeable about what you need to do to be a better you. I’m in the TV news business and it’s important for me to have a personal trainer who is flexible with my changing schedule. Shawn is not only flexible but he’s able to come to you! I wasn’t sure if I had the equipment needed in my building’s gym but Shawn quickly reassured me that he can make it work no matter the gym. His experience and professionalism are refreshing and he provides the motivation to keep you going. The initial assessment where Shawn got to know me and my goals really set us off on the right start. The price of working with Shawn is one that can’t be beat. His rates are great and the best in the region. I have to admit when I picked Shawn, I like a trainer who is a model of his personal training. Shawn talks the talk and definitely walks the walk. I highly recommend Gladiator Strong Fitness.

I was being trained by Catherine years ago and I said something about " No pain, no gain " as she corrected my posture during the routine. She quickly said that no one should experience "pain" when working out. I knew then that I had FINALLY found a REAL trainer. Catherine's training and professional skills are unmatched. She simply loves doing what she does and it shows. She trains you according to your skill level and ability, and she is never distracted by today's tech gadgets ,( cellphones) which means you get 100% of her time, every time. I moved out of state for a short time and invited Catherine down for a visit and workout of course. she could not out run me on the beach, but she whipped my butt in the gym , but they were good workouts. Later on during her visit, she took me to the market and taught me how to properly shop for quality organic foods , and quickly made a knock out dish for me and my friend as we looked on and took notes. I moved back to the DMV area, reconnected with her and now I am receiving weekly healthy meals from her. Boy is that a relief. And knowing that she is a certified nutritionist only adds to her credibility. In short, if you are looking for true quality in a trainer as well as someone too cook healthy meals for you, Catherine is the hands down choice and that's why I give her 5 stars. Keep up the good work Catherine. Mark Stith Silver Spring, MD

Meet Lisa 3 years ago, she was teaching different types of workout classes, I had not worked out in years, she made me feel welcome as she does with everyone. She is a great motivator and is always there to help reach any goal you have! I am a 54 year old women who with her help and determination reached goals I never thought I could. She helped me complete my first 5K and just this past October I had the pleasure of running my first half marathon with her and four other women she also trained. We all completed the marathon, of course with different times but we could have never done it without her perseverance and determination to see us succeed. I am so very thankful to have Lisa Paulse not only as my fitness trainer, but I can also call her my friend.

I have been training with Joel Martin for over a year. During this period he has provided me workouts that have helped me maintain and sometimes improve my running performances. At age 91 it isn't easy to improve one's running times but thanks to Joel this has actually happened. His workouts have resulted in a definite improvement in my endurance, flexibility, balance and strength. Joel is an excellent trainer. His workout drills are well presented and he is always available for consultation.

I was never really altheltic, when I graduated hs I could hardly run a mile. I started doing CrossFit in college. I fell in love with fitness, I progressed quickly over the next 6 years but then hit a wall.... my deadlift for example was only 165lb on a good day. I couldn't do pull-up strict among other things. Thur strength training and RKC kettlebell training I have improved my deadlift to over 200lbs and continue to improve. I have gained strength and have toned muscles! I feel like I can better perform in a CrossFit setting and with running. I learned about kettlebells and Tony has taught me how to incorporate them into my fitness goals. I can't thank Tony enough for showing me how to train and teaching me how to use kettlebells. I think kettlebells are great for anyone of all ages! He is wonderful as a personal coach or in a group. He strives to push me pass my limits and is always changing and incorporating the latest methods to help me gain strength and preform better. I finally feel strong. I love that when I started with Tony in 2013 I started swinging the 15lb bell and how I can do most workouts with 25,35,45,53,65,73lbs bells!! It's amazing to progress and have Tony who is enthusiast about training and teaching his passion.

He is a wealth of knowledge about health as well as physical training. He thoroughly researches anything that he doesn't already know. You are lucky to have him as your holistic coach.

I worked with Jaime for over a year and a half. He helped me realize a long-time goal of incorporating weight lifting into my lifestyle. I was a leaner guy looking to bulk up, and was basically starting from scratch. Jaime worked with me to customize a workout routine that drastically changed how I feel about my body. The best thing for me is the longterm health benefits his routines gave me, but people commenting on how good I look is also nice. Jaime brings a lot of knowledge to the field of personal training which is plagued with misinformation, but his biggest assets are his personality and passion. He brings an energy to the workouts that is palpable, and he truly cares about the people he works with. He is doing what he loves with his life and it shows. I ultimately stopped working with Jaime only because I finished grad school and had to go back to work. Once my schedule becomes settled I hope to work with him again to reach fitness goals that once seemed unattainable.

My experience with Sandra was life changing from week one through week twenty four. As a 53 year old man and a former athlete, I thought having this lady to train me would be a cake walk, (WRONG!) SHE BROKE ME DOWN!, I smiled, she smiled, I screamed, she screamed I cried and through up and she laughed, When it all was said and done with her training session, I was a 53 year old man feeling like I was a 22 year old young buck! This physical training and conditioning is now a part of my life daily routine. The only thing I can say Sandra could had done differently as she was training me is, she could had ran some of those sprints up and down those stairs for me! L.O.L. Money well spent. Thank You, Mz. Mansur is an outstanding personal trainer. When you meet him you will see that! I am in my mid-forties and have been training off and on with Mansur since 2008. He encouraged me to become a runner and taught me lifelong fitness habits. Before I met him I had never run more than three miles at one time. Thanks to his training now run one marathon each year in addition to several smaller races. What sets him apart from other personal trainers is that he leads by example. He continuously challenges himself. Most recently he placed near the top in the Super Spartan Race and qualified for American Ninja Warrior. He rode the 400-mile Vuelta de Puerto Rico and ran a 50-mile ultramarathon in a not-to-shabby time. I could not ask for a better motivator.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
