In-home catering for birthday party- buffet luncheon, for 50 people. Sara was a pleasure to work with - both professionally and personally. She was very responsive to modifications in menu, with helpful suggestions along the way. Food was of high quality, well-prepared and presented. Servers were very pleasant and helpful to guests, as requested. Very positive, unsolicited 'reviews' from everyone about the food, Sara, and her staff. High recommendation!

Totally pleased with the food and service provided by Christopher's Catering for our Christmas party -- the food was great, folks arrived on time, were a complete pleasure, everything flowed very smoothly and our guests had a great time - I will use them again! We had a house party that was for about 35 guests and we hired Daniel for the catering. It was the best decision we made! The food was amazing, from the hot appetizers to the main courses (chicken, beef) to the variety of desserts- it was all delicious. I couldn't believe how many guests commented about the food and the presentation. And the presentation was certainly unique- he served the entrees in giant martini glasses so that we could stand and mill about while holding food. Fantastic idea. Daniel first came over to our house to check out the layout and kitchen and we went over the menu and how we were going to set everything up. This helped to make sure that everything on the day of the party went smoothly. He had a server (his daughter) and she was such a huge help and worked very hard. Together, they took care of everything related to the food - everything! All the food was fresh and cooked right in the kitchen so we weren't eating reheated food. They not only cooked here and served, but they took care of the clean up and packaged and put away all the extra food for us. They took all the stress away from planning a party and we were left to enjoy ourselves. We had so many people we hadn't seen for years that it was wonderful to just relax and enjoy the conversation and food with them. I can't recommend Daniel highly enough. We would definitely hire him again!

It was truly a wonderful experience providing a different meal each week for 11 weeks. We not only enjoyed variety, but also very tasty, filling meals prepared with great care. Sara sought not just to serve food but to serve a group of adults each week with her culinary delights and her strong desire to meet our catering needs. Deacon Larry Cummins

It was such a pleasure to work with John throughout our wedding planning process and ESPECIALLY on the day of our wedding. We would recommend him as one of our top vendors. It is a very close tie in praise between how amazingly good the food was and how professional and prepared his team was. All of the guests enjoyed the meal, which given our last minute changes due to weather, was an amazing improvisation by John to get all of the food out timely and everything was delicious. Picking our menu and doing our tasting was one of the best parts of the planning process and John made it so easy. He had excellent suggestions and was willing to talk through all of our priorities and wants for our day. The final result was a beautifully presented meal that everyone raved about. His team worked so hard the day of our wedding, but multiple guests commented on the positivity and joy they brought to the venue. Everyone was smiling and went above and beyond to provide excellent service. Once we found J&L Catering, it was hard to find a better value for our money for the extent of the services John and his team provided. We would recommend him to anyone in the future for any catering needs.

Hostess Catering gave us great peace of mind every step of the way for the reception for 75 people for our son and daughter-in-law's vow renewal ceremony. Delicious seasonal hors d'oeuvres served on elegant platters and assorted beverages displayed in beautiful decanters made quite an impression on our guests. We highly recommend Visnja, Donna, and their staff at Hostess Catering for any special event. Their attention to detail and professional demeanor impressed us all.

Soraya helped plan my daughters 5th birthday party, she is extremely helpful and professional. She helped re-schedule the activities for the event due a snow storm at the very last minute and I was able to pull of the entire event as planned thanks to her help. She personally made sure I had all that I wanted for the event and even stayed till she was sure everything was there as planned. I would highly recommend Soraya.

Chef Marty and his team provided appetizers, main meal, desserts, bar service, linens and dinnerware for our recent Holiday Party_12/6/13. Chef Marty was a delight to work with, he was responsive to our menu requests & updates; the request for a vegan meal was provided without a hitch. Pricing for our Holiday Party was fabulous, as a volunteer organization, we are always looking for the best for our dollars. The best review to offer was the request for business cards from the attendees! The serving staff were friendly and accommodating to last minute requests. I will keep Malone Catering's contact information near by!

I have used Buffets Inc for at least 8 years and would not use anyone else! The food is made fresh each day, the prices are reasonable, this is a family owned business and they are great to work with. I first met Mark when he was volunteering his services for a non-profit I was involved with and was impressed with him personally and professionally. I have used Buffets Inc for small meetings to large clam bakes. If I am serving lunch at a meeting the attendees will often ask if Mark is catering because they remember his food and desserts! I can't say enough good things about Buffets Inc!

Kendra catered a 50th birthday dinner for 80 people. Her food was outstanding, beautifully presented, and absolutely fresh and delicious. Her attention to detail was noticed by all my guests who immediately took her card! The beautifully presentation means as much to Kendra as how delicious her food is. I highly recommend Kendra and her staff for all your catering needs!

We first saw their catering services with very competitive pricing, we decided to pay the restaurant a visit. The interior is very well done and the food qualify is very good. We got in touch and proceeded to book them for our baby's welcoming party. The Thumb Tack online response is quick, we also got in touch with the owner. We changed the menu and selection three times and they provided confirmation and delivered on-time. Will hire again and will probably dine there. Highly recommend.

We worked with Kris from Harding Catering for our company's open house. He was extremely communicative, arrived early, and our customers and friends had many excellent comments on the food. Presentation and quality obviously mean a lot to this company. Thank you for making our event of about 100 people nearly effortless!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
    • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
    • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
    • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
