What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. I started training with Billy in Jan 2017. I interviewed other trainers at the time but never found a good fit. Upon meeting Billy for the first time, I was immediately impressed with his knowledge and experience about nutrition, strength training, anatomy, and overall fitness. He is an excellent listener and employs routines and strategies that support his client's goals / needs. Little did I know that I would reach my goal weight (additional 30 lb loss), succeed in strength training taking me to new personal records that I never dreamed of (deadlifts, etc...), firm up body and run my very first 5K within 6-7 months of starting to work with Billy. I have had a few injuries (shoulder, back) from extracurricular sports that have required physical therapy. Billy understands PT's approach, is happy to communicate & build plans with them, and then modifies our routine to support PT objectives while continuing to stay on a path supporting strength training and overall fitness. I plan to continue working with New School Fitness / Billy on a regular basis (training for "Tough Mudder" or possibly "Spartan" - can't believe it - so amazing). After such a successful, and fun, first year training with Billy, I am happy to highly recommend "New School Fitness".

I sought out personal training because I was overweight, out of shape, & when I went to the gym I had no idea what I was doing. I was worried I wouldn't be able to afford it & also worried that personal training was more suited to athletes or bodybuilders. I posted on this site, & got some responses very quickly. Johnny was one of the first to contact me, & we worked out a plan I could afford which he felt would help me achieve my objectives. In two and a half months I lost nearly thirty pounds with a meal plan Johnny devised, meeting with him once a week, & doing workouts he designs & monitors on my own. I am in better health overall & feel more confident at the gym. I am still working with Johnny & feel my decision to do personal training with him was a wise decision. Johnny has a studio he shares with other trainers, & it's clean & never crowded. He has a lot of knowledge about fitness, health, & exercise. He varies my routines so I'm always learning new things. He works with bodybuilders as well as couch potatoes like myself, & I highly recommend him as a trainer.

Billy is a fantastic personal trainer. He has an impressive background with a very diverse clientele, which shows his comfortability, competency, and versatility in all different levels. He is laid-back, personable, knowledgeable, and it is clear that he has our best interests in mind - he talks to me like a real person, not a customer. He is always on-time and I never feel rushed in my work-outs (even though I’m late half the time..). Billy tailor-fits and personalizes programs to suit my needs and goals, whether it is my long term goal of body transformation, or just wanting to add more core work-outs for that particular day, for example. He is able to constitute exercises as we go, and always changes it up, which keep the sessions fun and challenging. I appreciate how he focuses on proper dieting aspects as well. Lastly, Billy is very in-depth and precise in communicating what I am doing and why. He educates you on exercise selection and order, proper form, what muscles are being targeted, etc. to maximize results, which some personal trainers don’t do. Because of this, he has instilled enough confidence in me needed to perform the exercises on my own. With a decent amount of options here on Thumbtack, I am very happy with my choice with New School Fitness and highly recommend Billy. I feel more energetic, fit, and overall healthier and happier. :)

I really enjoyed working with Anna over the last few weeks. This was this first time I tried personal training, and Anna did a phenomenal job personalizing my workout routine and helping me establish some goals for my sessions. She took the time to understand my background/fitness history before building a plan, and made sure to follow-up on my goals at every session. She was also exceptionally flexible with timings/scheduling, and this made it that much easier for me to get the most out of my sessions since I work a fairly demanding full-time job with lots of last minute scheduling issues. I would definitely recommend working with Anna, and she will be sure to get you out of your rut and into a good workout routine!

Jimmy is by far the best coach I could have asked for - I had never worked out with a personal trainer before, let alone had any consistent workout regimen, period. Lou is most definitely a fitness-and-nutrition nerd in the best way possible and, unlike many PTs, he actually practices what he preaches. He’s amassed a staggering wealth of knowledge from years of personal and professional experience, and stays abreast of the science and studies that support the advice he provides his clients. His training sessions are always challenging, interesting, and fun. He takes the time to explain how to do an exercise and why it’s effective (though you will certainly feel it's effects the next day!) and motivates you to do far more in the gym than you thought you could. Moreover, his services don’t end when you finish your session; I text him often with nutrition and fitness inquiries. He’s always quick to respond and encourages me to keep asking questions-- not just because he clearly loves the subject matter, but also because he genuinely cares about his clients.
