Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Contact professional furniture movers near you to get estimates for your move.

Delivery by Dawn made my move experience an easy one. The movers were professional and efficient. They had everything they needed for whatever items I needed to move. I ended up with more items to move than originally agreed upon. The movers assured me that everything would be moved and to have no worries. Overall an extremely positive experience. I would hire them again.

The team of movers from Affordable Movers planned their lifting and moving by surveying the path and making sure obstacles are cleared first. They angled the spa placement the way I have requested it to be. They did the job in less than 30 minutes. Thank you Affordable Movers!

I am an experienced packer & mover, I am always very prepared for a move. I was moving from a 2 BR sfh ONE level into a 3 level townhome, thus the first part of the move should have been quick & easy. The 3 movers were to arrive at 8AM, they arrived at 8:45AM no call. No problem, I know traffic is difficult. Most of the boxes & bins were located in the dining room. There was one bedroom (bed already broken down), one office, a small dining room table (already broken down) (chairs), small kitchen table (chairs), patio table & 4 chairs, various occasional tables, and 50 boxes/bins. All items to go were flagged and labeled. Two of the movers looked able to move, one is a very old man; no disrespect to elders, but there is no way the older man was able or prepared to move anything. Unfortunately, it took almost 3 hours to load this small amount of items (8:45 - 11:30). At 10:15, I called the main number and told the man the movers were woefully unprepared to move. The man answering the phone told me "my bad" about the older gentleman. He would "make it right". Ok. Let's keep moving forward. We go to the new house (3 miles away) the driver drives 10-15 mph on a 40-50 mph road, other drivers were honking & beeping. This felt like an obvious attempt to have a long, drawn out moving to increase the cost of the move. Once here, the 3 movers start to unpack the truck. The new house was labeled (rooms) and post it notes were documented where the larger items should be placed. All of a sudden the older gentleman was gone and the lead mover asked me to talk on the phone to the mgr. I did and he told me they were sending 3 add'l movers because of the older gentlemen was not able to adequately move. One of the new 3 movers was STELLAR; he was helpful, able to move things, etc. If they were all like him, that would be amazing! Again, promises to make it right. Net/Net, this move took 7 hours and it should have taken no more than 4. At the end, the lead mover told me the "full amount" for 3 movers and 7 hours. I called the mgr and he did give a discount, which is appreciated but it was more than fair, considering the circumstances (and the fact that I pitched in and moved a lot). 2 of my 3 dressers were wrapped in plastic and broken (they must have carried them by the legs and broke them off the dressers). My dining room table top was not wrapped (scratched) but a leather ottoman was wrapped. They also left my patio table, bike and dog kennel at the old address. They did go back and get the table, but I had to push them. Things were in the wrong rooms, wrong floors, despite being clearly labeled --- which resulted in me having to move things AGAIN in the new house. Totally not satisfied with the moving service (with the exception with the 1 mover).

The move was scheduled for Sunday but unfortunately due to extreme high temperatures/overheating of a vehicle the movers were not able to make it. But, Mohan and crew made up for it the next day by arriving early, disassembling/loading and unloading and reassembling efficiently with no damage to any furniture! I would highly recommend Dart Moving Services and I plan to use them again for any future moves. Thanks, Mohan!

Proah responded quickly to my initial request. We agreed on the move and price. He called the morning of the move to provide estimated time of arrival. He was on time, professional, moved a couch from my home to my daughter's apartment. Couch was delivered up two flights of stairs and handled carefully and professionally. Would definitely recommend and use again. Great experience. Thank you Proah Movers.

The team arrived in time and moved us quickly, but we’re rough with our belongings. A lot of our U-Haul boxes had to be trashed and not stored because of how mangled they were by the end of the move. It makes me glad that I moved over our glassware myself separately. Our favorite lamp did not survive the move and now I have to find a metal work repairman to attempt to fix as they broke the item at the base. This lamp cost as much as the entire move quote. While they were responsive, they failed to communicate that an additional mover would be added to the job, therefor adding an additional cost, until my paperwork was being drawn up and the price was different from what was quoted. Additionally I was then charged full price for the move, which I refused to pay due to the fact that a high value item was ruined. The cost to repair (if possible) is going to be well in excess of the discount I demanded. I understand these things can happen when moving furniture, but we have moved that specific item ourselves in a U-Haul previously with no issue, so I took offense to the way they brushed off the damage. Overall I would not use them again. To be honest overall I would probably just go back to conducting the move myself with some friends. Positives: - quick response on thumbtack - punctual - fast move - reasonable price Negatives: - price/ status changes not clearly communicated - very rough with items being moved

We are so happy that we chose Smart moving to move our home recently. It was so nice to see such hard working, young men who were so polite and accommodating. They made arrangements to hold our belongings on their 26 ft truck for 5 days and moved us in very nicely. We would recommend Smart Moving to all our friends. The price was right and the work was great. These guys are good!
