Nick was hired to check a non-working water heater & replaced the worn out coupling in no time. He also installed a new ceiling light socket, upgraded the existing wall switch, hung the light fixture & hung 3 additional ceiling light fixtures in other rooms. He is very pleasant to have in your home - respectful & friendly. Of course he is a very competant electrician! You hire a tradesman to do good work for a fair price - when they turn out to be nice as well, it's a real bonus! Give Nick your every consideration. We already have him booked to do additional work in our home & he is now "on -call" when needed for work at our commercial building for both plumbing & electrical jobs.

RPM did a great job taking care of my plumbing needs. They were very flexible and accommodating with their schedule - even coming out late in the evening to make sure the work was done in a timely manner. I would definitely hire them again.

I wanted to choose all five categories, punctual and value as well. Steve was thorough and did an excellent job. He worked quickly, but did not rush. He took enough time to make sure he was doing a good job. He put up with me following him around. I don’t want to get into specifics, but he did a lot of work, was very accommodating, and saw the jobs through to completion and clean up. It can be very hard to find plumbers, electricians, etc. I found a good one. If I ever need plumbing done, I’ll call Steve.

Their tech was able to come a day after I called, even though it’s been a very busy time for plumbers right now. He walked me through everything he was doing and was very knowledgeable about the plumbing brands and the common issues with each. Not once did he try to upsell me! Very professional and a pleasure to work with. I would definitely hire them again!

Douglas did an excellent job! I am highly satisfied with his work. He had to work in a very tight closet space to install a faucet set in my bathtub with outdated plumbing fixtures. His work is very professional; my faucet looks great! I could tell that he takes pride in his work.

I give Tony Harris 5 Stars all the way!!! Our job was a bit more complicated than expected. Replaced a laundry room faucet that had been installed many, many years ago. There were a few "kinks" in the job itself, however, Tony was professional and very accommodating. He did an amazing job and we are very happy with the results. I will call this company for any and all of our future heating, cooling and/or plumbing needs. I HIGHLY recommend this company. Price was great! Thank you again, Tony.

I run a small business and it's been great to meet another person who just shows up on time and gets thing's done without bs. I've been working with Charlie for over a year on a huge variety of projects and he's been very helpful and knowledgeable with all of them. He has done plumbing, hvac, painting, glass & ceramic tile back splashes for me and I will 100% be using him again in the near future. Thanks again Mr. Moon.

He properly completed our plumbing leak repair with new pipe and parts that were stocked on his truck, quickly and for a very reasonable price. David is able to communicate effectively and has proven to be honest. Jam Restoration made a bad situation a good experience. Thank you for everything David.

On the same day I posted on Thumbtack, Kane came out to give me a quote. His team was here the next morning and installed a new water heater, replaced some galvanized pipes, installed a chimney liner and fixed the pitch of the outlet coming from my chimney. They worked fast, did quality work and cleaned up after themselves. Kane made additional plumbing suggestions, so he will be back out this Friday. Great company!

Andrew from First Class Plumbing was on-time and easy to work with. He showed up at 5:00 and was done between 6:30 & 7:00. First Class Plumbing was the only company to respond to my request within 24 hours. When you can't use your kitchen sink, you don't want to wait days to see who's $10 cheaper. I have received a couple of cheaper quotes since the work was finished, but I'm glad it was done the day I asked and I'm not still waiting to use the sink.

Had to replace our sump pump in our finished basement on very short notice. We liked Adam's responsiveness in his initial quote, his warranty and the price as well. He was running late in getting to our house but called in advance to tell us. He was personable and very thorough in his work. We would DEFINITELY hire him again.

Scott was very quick to reply to my request for a quote, gave me a quote and stuck to that even when the job was a little more complicated than what he had thought it would be, showed up on time, communicated with me to let me know he was on his way, and was very professional throughout the entire process. I highly recommend him for any plumbing work you need done!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
