We booked Michael Jay for our October 1st wedding earlier this year (March-ish) and he was amazing every step of the way. He was easily reachable by all communications and made the planning process stress free. Not only did he cook for us but he also helped supply us with party insurance, tables, linens, chairs, etc. His staff also helped my parents set up for the wedding. We had a venue that did not have a kitchen and most other caterers were going to cook off site and bring our food in hot boxes. Michael brought everything he needed to cook on site for us (stoves, grills, etc) so everything was fresh! Everyone loved our taco bar, slider bar, and Asian noodle bar. I would recommend Michael to anyone :)

We hired Oceanique Catering for my daughter's high school graduation party. From the start, Darlene was very responsive. We wanted a buffet of Mexican dishes, and Darlene was first to respond with a custom menu. The price was reasonable and included full service, which we really needed for the size of this party. Darlene offered to come out in advance for a tasting, which helped us to narrow down the menu a bit. Our graduate is gluten intolerant, and Darlene had a lot of suggestions for gluten free options. All of our guests thought the food was outstanding! We had 2 staff people who stood behind the buffet tables, served the food, and kept the food hot and stocked. It was a nice touch! We also paid extra for the bartender, which was great as we didn't have to worry about underage drinking. Would definitely recommend Oceanique for any event.

Graduation Party August 2016 No matter what your next event is, Chef Cathy is the right personal Chef for the job! If you want delicious, memorable, and fun – Chef Cathy is who you want to call. I haven’t known Chef Cathy very long, but I have watched and enjoyed the many samples she has brought into our Networking group. I have heard directly from people that used her for smaller events and were so very pleased they did. From the moment we started talking about using her for my daughters’ graduation party, I was confident she was a good choice. Then, she brought samples to our house one evening, which mind you was like having samples from a fancy restaurant right in your home! The samples were outstanding and made the menu decisions even easier. She fed this family of 4 very well that night, and from that point on I knew Cathy Ferrara and Supper Made Simple was the perfect selection for our event. The best part of hiring a caterer is not having to prepare the food. The even better part of hiring Chef Cathy and her team is, not having to do anything at all, except to relax and talk with all the guests at the party. And that’s exactly what we got to do! The big day came, Chef Cathy and her team showed up and we, not only enjoyed great food, but really got to spend time with all of our guests! That would have been impossible if we were serving the food, especially since there was over 100 guests at the party. You know something is successful when virtually every guest tells you that the “food is great” without you even bringing up the topic. That really did happen; we honestly heard it the whole evening. Our daughters’ special day was made even more special by Chef Cathy and her team. If you are looking for anything from a romantic dinner for two for a special occasion, dinner for a family gathering or right on up to a large party – call Chef Cathy! Call her Today! First of all, I'd like to say that Jeff's outfit absolutely lives up to its name – everything about the food, the staff and the service was, to put it mildly, over the top. For starters, Jeff was a pleasure to work with during the planning and booking process. He put together a fantastic menu for my event, and modified it a couple of times to accommodate my requests. He didn't bat an eye at my family's dietary restrictions, and planned an entirely gluten-free meal. He was easily reached, and very responsive to calls and emails. On the day of the event, Jeff and his crew arrived promptly, and immediately went to work. They prepped the food while the event was getting started, and had beautiful and delicious charcuterie and crudite displays to tide people over until the dinner buffet opened. The food was outstanding – every single guest gushed at how good the dishes were. The portions were generous, and I had tons of leftovers. Jeff also took care of bar service for me. The bar package was impressively thorough, and included mixers like lavender-infused simple syrups. Mac, the bartender for the evening, was attentive, eager, and wonderfully friendly. He made friends with everyone as readily as he mixed up really tasty drinks. And at the end of the night, Jeff left everything tidy and clean. I honestly believe that my night wouldn't have been as memorable or fun without Jeff and crew there. I cannot say enough good things or recommend them highly enough – book through Jeff with confidence, and know that he'll make your event one to remember too.

I cannot rave enough about my experience with this company!!!! It was just blind faith that I selected them, but after Kerry contacted me and we e-mailed a few times, I was sure that I had made the correct choice. I had Rocky's Rotisserie cater a Birthday Party for my 93 year old mother with about 30 guests. They are located in Livonia, and the party was in Sterling Heights, but Kerry assured me the distance (about a 40-45 minute drive) was not a problem. Kerry delivered an OUTSTANDING buffet with very amazing and tasty food. He was on time with the delivery, brought everything in and set it up and waited until the moment we were ready to eat before he uncovered the hot food. The food was very high quality and so delicious. I cannot even tell you how many of the guests commented on the presentation and taste of the food. I was impressed that the food was delivered in heated bags, and stayed hot throughout the serving time. Kerry took care of everything...dinner plates, salad plates, dessert plates, utensils , napkins, serving utensils, butter pats....I really did not have to provide anything (except beverages, of course). The peach cobbler was a hit...actual slices of peaches, not mushed up fruit, that were soft, yet still chewy. The cost was very reasonable, and the delivery charge was way lower than many places that were closer to me. I am racking my brain, wondering when I can have another party, just to get them to cater it for me again. The ONLY suggestion I do have is that Kerry should bring a pile of business cards next time, because more than one guest asked me for contact information on this company. Thank you so much, Kerry and Rocky's, for taking the stress out of the day and making my mother's party a success in every way. Sincerely, Barb Marten

Had a pho party for our quarterly meeting, had pho at a Vietnamese restaurant before and wasn't too sure what to expect for the event from others, but only a little convincing. So glad we had it, each person was able to customize their own bowl or bowls, we order enough for 80 people, but a couple days before we had to change count to 125, we called and they were like "no problem", they came prepare, about half went up for seconds so they were prepared. Best part was it is gluten free, didn't realized that some of the staff needed it. Will definitely use again. And the dumplings...wow so good, they also cooked those on site as well for appetizers.

Everything was amazing and nothing short of spectacular! We created our own menu because we have a lot of gluten free family members and Nikolina was able to suggest an entire theme, and plenty of food for everyone to take home.

My daughter and I hired Detroit Ice Cream to provide gluten free dessert choices at my daughter's August wedding in Detroit. We are so happy we did!! Not only are the home made ice cream products absolutely delicious (my grandchildren described them as "best ever") but La Kisha herself is charming, gracious, flexible , prompt, reliable and creative in adding ideas to the dessert service at the wedding. She served the ice cream choices (including vegan and lactose free choices) from a cart covered by a festive umbrella. It added a fun ambience to our garden wedding. I highly recommend Detroit Ice Cream to enhance any event. You will be very pleased!

Jesse catered my rehearsal dinner and did an AMAZING job. The menu was original and everything tasted delicious. He even made dishes to accommodate my food allergies and made an awesome gluten free dessert. He was professional, efficient, clean, and made sure every single dish was perfect. I couldn't be happier with how the dinner turned out--and we received so many compliments from our guests. We are so happy we chose him to cater our rehearsal dinner!

The vintage kitchen is an amazing and hard working company! They helped with the decorating of my wedding and did our whole dessert table! It was amazing the amount of compliments we received because of their talents. The cake and cupcakes were deliciously moist, melted right in your mouth! They made everything stress free for me and my husband. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to everyone!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
