Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a wedding officiant during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The safest way to conduct a consultation during COVID-19 is virtually. Ask wedding officiants near you if they can have a phone call or a virtual appointment over video chat. If they can, make sure to ask them any questions you have about upcoming work. Discuss what precautions, if any, they have in place to ensure safety. You might consider asking if they accept digital payments or if they can complete the work remotely, without any in-person contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How much does a wedding planner cost per hour?

On average, wedding planners charge $80 for their services. However, rates can range from roughly $50 per hour to $100 per hour, or even more than $300 per hour.

To find out how much it will cost to hire a wedding planner, request cost estimates from a few in your area. Also, keep in mind that some wedding planners may have flat fees instead of hourly rates.

Do wedding officiants offer remote or virtual services?

Reach out to wedding officiants in your area, and ask them if they can offer a remote or virtual ceremony. Some officiants may be willing to meet in person while maintaining 6 feet of distance, while others may prefer to conduct the entire service over the phone or a video call service such as Skype or Zoom.

Familiarize yourself with the social distancing rules in your community, city and state, and move forward only if both you and the officiant are comfortable with the arrangement.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

JUNE IS YOUR OFFICIANT...LOOK NO FURTHER! No matter how much I could write on here, it wouldn’t be enough to express how thankful I am that we chose June to be our officiant. She was incredible before, during, and after the ceremony. Beforehand, she took the time to really get to know us as a couple and made the ceremony completely catered to us. She sent us rough drafts, encouraged us to make changes as much as we wanted (we literally only changed a couple words because the original was so amazing) and was open to all ideas. On the wedding day, she was perfect- on top of her toes for anything that went astray and made everything flow so beautifully. She told our love story better than we ever have. We were supposed to have a big California wedding but had to have a small at-home ceremony in Michigan due to Covid-19 but we never felt like we were missing out on anything, thanks to June. She incorporated our wedding “guests” on Zoom and everyone said how wonderful she was. I could go on and on but moral of this review is that you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t pick June to be your officiant.

Kristin was great. She was professional, clean and easy to get along with. She arrived on time and took a very short time to set up since the makeup and hair was done on site. Her prices are affordable and her work deserves every penny. She will have my business for a few future wedding events. Thanks Kristin you were a delight to work with.

We needed a photographer at the last minute for a 50 year wedding anniversary party. We looked on Thumbtack and Mike responded within minutes. He had about 2 hours to prepare and get to my address. He listened to want I wanted and was on point with everything we talked about. Mike charged us a reasonable price and was very nice and respectful. He even wore a face mask the whole time he was there as Covid-19 restrictions were going on. Mike will stay in my contacts for future photography needs. Thank You Mike.

Pastor Fred officiated our wedding yesterday, and did a beautiful job. He's very personable, and passionate about uniting people in marriage. He is a very sweet man. My husband and I are not religious and I was concerned in going with pastor Fred that our ceremony wouldn't be what we wanted. He reassured me constantly that it was our day, and he would do whatever we wanted. During the ceremony he has his little quirks when he would go off script and say "this is just wonderful" or "aren't they beautiful together?" Which added a personal touch to our ceremony and made us relax. If you are looking for an officiant who will go above and beyond to make sure your day is special and exactly what you want, Pastor Fred will make it happen. :)
