Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

I've never worked with a personal trainer before, and was a little weary, but Brandon has been incredible and instantly put me at ease. In the months we've been training together I've improved my diet (with Brandon's help), increased my strength, stamina and feel better about where I'm at physically. Brandon takes a genuine interest in your goals and sets a plan to help you achieve your fitness objective. As someone who is recovering from an accident, Brandon has tailored my workouts to help me push myself, but also takes my physical limitations into consideration. It's been a great experience so far. I'm looking forward to continually improving with Brandon's expert guidance. On top of all that, he's just a good dude. If you're thinking about working with a personal trainer do yourself a favor and message Brandon.

Amber talked with me to find the best fit for personal training. My husband and I already work out on our own and were looking for specific outdoor work out moves to step it up. Amber had us work with Kristi who was wonderful! We worked with her at our local park and she walked us through five different workouts, all tailored to what we wanted to work on! After working with several personal trainers, I was hoping for some fresh new moves - Kristi was great at providing just that! I'm very glad I found I Think I Can Fitness - thank you Kristi and Amber!

Having Joe for a personal trainer was what I needed in order to get to meet my goal. I had tried training on my own but it wasn't working and I was not getting the results that I was hoping for. First, out of all the trainers I looked into, Joe was the only one who was knowledgable about diastasis recti. My doctor at the time told me there were two ways to fix it: surgery or training. Joe trained me into fixing my condition without the need of surgery. I am forever grateful to him for this. It took about 6 months to close my gap. We worked on a diet that was realistic. His approach is very easy and simple. If you follow it, stick to it and continue to do it, you can't fail. You just can't! What I really enjoyed about training with Joe was the one on one training with him. He was able to teach me how to use the equipments correctly and do the workout routines correctly. That meant with correct form, you are able to get maximum results during your time at the gym. He really pushed you to do your best and to give your all. Joe is a very positive person. He strives for you to do your best. My hour with him, always went by very quick! He's professional and reliable. He cares about his clients. I never felt like he was watching the clock or he didn't want to be there during our training sessions. He truly loves helping people get into shape and being healthy. I was able to get my prebaby body back before I had my baby. My husband was very skeptical about getting a personal trainer at first but he's very happy with the results. He husband appreciates Joe for helping me achieve my goal and getting my body back to what it was. Whatever goal you are trying to obtain, Joe will help you succeed. He isn't there to see you fail but to see you go above and beyond your goal(s).

I had the pleasure of working with Joe for the last 4 months in preparation for a modeling event I had earlier this month. I'm a guy that, prior to working with Joe, had made it to the gym 5-6 days a week. But I had always been interested in working with a personal trainer to see if I could push my results to another level. The biggest thing I looked for in a trainer was that he either currently, or had been, where I wanted to get. Joe was that guy. Whether you are looking to casually get in better shape or prepare for an upcoming competition, you definitely need to sit down and talk with Joe. You're not just paying for a one hour workout with Joe, he is accessible anytime. He works to understand your goals and puts in a lot of work outside of the training sessions to make sure he is prepared with a great workout. He also checks up with you to see how you're feeling and provides advice and answers your questions anytime. I will be able to take the things I learned from Joe and apply them for the rest of my life. He educates you on proper lifting, cardio, and nutrition. Having a trainer that understands proper nutrition is huge and really invaluable. A nutritionalist alone costs more then what Joe charges for all he does. I could really tell he cared about getting me to where I needed to be and that meant a lot. I was always skeptical about paying a personal trainer, but after working with Joe I hate working out by myself. My results were awesome! If you are motivated and committed to getting the results you want, Joe can get you there. Call him, its worth the free consultation!

To give some background, I was a recovering bulimic who obsessed with food and absolutely hated looking at the mirror. I’ve tried personal trainers a couple years of ago (usually the ones that give free sessions with your gym membership), but they didn’t help with building a positive self-image. Finally, I was fed up with my body and my strength (or lack thereof), so I googled for affordable personal trainers outside of gyms with good reviews. One of the reasons I picked Brandon right away is because of his affordable rate. Forty dollars per session is a steal, especially when he drives to your location and pays for his own parking at your own appointed time. That kind of service is very helpful for a struggling college student. Not to mention, he quickly identified a good meal plan, and he used the free assessment to really personalize the workouts he gives. It also helps to have a trainer who cares about your progress and doesn’t beat you up if you have a bad week. Sometimes life happens, but at least he’s there to advise you on what you should change if something isn’t working. I think he caught on that I love positive reinforcement, because his encouragement and advice really pushed me to change my lifestyle. The weight loss wasn’t even the best part about his training. I used to hate sports, athletics, or any kind of physical activity, but now I love running. Working out has officially replaced my netflix binges. I am super thankful and happy that I’ve had this experience.

I hired John as a personal trainer because I needed someone to help me stay on track with diet and exercise. I did a session with him, and I knew he was the one for me. He was professional and always pushed me to make that extra effort. Even if I couldn't do it, he was supportive and optimistic about me getting it next time. John will help you achieve your goals by giving you a detailed plan about what he expects from you. He helped me get to my goals, and if I was still living in the Twin Cities area, I would hire him again.

Joe is phenomenal. Super supportive, flexible in options, doesn't beat you over the head in ways that don't help you. He really takes the time to get to know you and your specific goals and timelines. I've lost 23lbs in the 3 weeks I worked with him. I had a very short timeline to prep for a big event and Joe rocked it! He gave me the exact daily push that I needed to stay on track and change the things I was doing. I still had to put in the work and eat very specific, but Joe is the one that guided me and taught me what I needed to do each day. I would totally recommend Joe. If you're looking for someone that can get you where you want to be..... Stop looking, you've found your trainer. In the sea of personal trainers and people I interviewed, Joe really stood out above all the rest and I'm extremely happy I made the right decision. I will continue to use in a Joe daily basis Joe once I come back from my big event.

It's an incredible experience to step into a room with a professional trainer that has the kind of expertise and history that a man like Doug Moore has. The modern day version of Jack Lalanne. It didn't matter whether Doug was talking about his professional accomplishments as a champion weight lifter or overcoming personal adversity following a car accident it was clear that a key to his success is the tremendous internal drive to keep making progress towards his goals. No excuses. That is the same type of energy he conveys when designing a workout strategy for a client and motivating them to be successful. I understood he would be there to guide and support but ultimate success was my responsibility. A great lesson to start out with from from someone that has been there. Doug demonstrates the right combination of patience and drive and he presents it all in a very professional way.

I've been seeing Scott for one-on-one personal training sessions three days a week for the last 5 weeks. I've seen great results in both fat loss and strength gain. I came to Scott when I made the realization that in order to get results, I was going to need somebody to teach me about proper form and nutrition. I also knew that I needed to be accountable to somebody, especially for the first few weeks of training. Scott has given me quite the education! From walking me through excersises and explaining their purpose, to helping me develop proper nutrition for fat loss and muscle gain, I've gotten a much better grasp on what I need to do in order to get strong and be healthy. Being a vegetarian, I've read all the fitness articles that put forth the idea that 'you have to eat meat to gain muscle' and 'a vegetarian lifter can never be as strong as a meat eater'. Though Scott himself isn't a vegetarian, he has never made me feel like those statements are true. He's helped me learn how to get the proper nutrition without trying to convince me to change my dietary preferences. It's been an awesome experience so far, and I plan to continue my one-on-one sessions for the foreseeable future! Thanks, Scott!
