Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

They did their best with installing three fans for us. However, our house is old and a wire got pulled with the second fan install that knocked power our to most of our apartment. I had to hire an electrician to come fix. These guys did a fine job, it was just a job that I should have hired an electrician for instead. Nice guys and good communicators.

He is a good electrician, but very bad at communicating. I waited for days to set up appointments and sat one day for 7 hours waiting.

From getting the estimate, to scheduling, to completing the work, Mill City was outstanding from start to finish. They were significantly more reasonable than what we were quoted from another electrician. Mill City sent two electricians over the course of two days to complete the work at our house. They also gave us great advice on upgrades that were recommended or not necessarily worth the hassle/time/investment. I appreciated their honesty. All of the employees that we dealt with texted in a timely manner and answered all of our questions thoroughly. I would definitely recommend Mill City to friends and have them return if any additional work is needed.

I do not recommend his price sky high compare to other same certified electrician for the same jobs more than double. It feel to take advantage on the customers. ( Pre wired ring pro 2 door bell provide the hardwares) Charge 350$ others charge 120$-140$ Unreasonable!

Jason responded quickly to my request for electrical help. During the estimate he gave sound advice that helped me understand issues that I had never considered. He is a Master Electrician and it was evident in the quality of the work he completed. He upgraded my whole electrical panel from 100 amps to 200. He organized a team of electricians to finish the work in one day. In the process of completing that, we discovered that the house still had an old cloth-covered wire that was disintegrating, exposing live wires. He made time in his schedule to come back a few days later to replace that old wire with new. Knowing that my electrical system was now up to code and safe gave me valuable peace of mind.

I was looking for a licensed electrician to install some GFCI's in several different locations around the house in order to comply with a home inspection that the buyer had done. I was under a time crunch and Midwest was able to come out immediately to give an estimate. The estimator was on time and very professional. The estimate did not take long and the price was very reasonable. I scheduled the work with them and asked if they could accommodate our tight timeframe before closing on the house. They were able to fit us in. The electrician that came out was on time, professional and knowledgeable. He did great work and cleaned up after himself. I was very happy with the service. A couple days later I had a follow-up question and the customer service was excellent. If I have any electrical needs in the future I will definitely be calling Midwest Electric and Generator. I needed an electrician to install the wiring for a heated bathroom floor (I was replacing an existing one so most of the wiring was there). Granted I needed it relatively last minute (I had a week to find someone) and most people I called were booked weeks or months out. This company said they could come out but based on my description (I was told by my tile man 1-2 hours work), I was quoted 750.00. When I asked for a breakdown of either hourly rate or job rate, I was given no information. The person in the chat box simply said "I give you a quote, you accept or decline." I declined. I found an electrician on Nextdoor who charged me 175.00 for the job, he fit me into his very busy schedule and did an excellent job.

I couldn’t be happier with the work done by Great Midwest Electric. It turns out it helps to have a licensed electrician to electrical work! We hired a handyman to replace ceiling fans and they caused a power outage. Great Midwest not only corrected the power issue, but also re-attached the fans and checked all the connections, and put in another outlet in our hallway. I will be going back to use Great Midwest for any future issues!
