Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

The job was moving a 2 bedroom apartment into a walk out ranch home. The movers were there on time, and there were 3 movers and a truck which was the agreement. I would rate the move 4.5 stars. Good people, worked hard, and I think the amount of time it took to get the job done was reasonable. I have 2 issues: 1. They do not tell you that they will not take hanging clothes unless they are in bags. I assumed they would bring wardrobe boxes but those were extra and it was not explained as an option when I signed up. I quickly bagged all my hanging clothes and they did take them. The movers were nice about that. This was not the movers problem, but the people I called when I booked the move. 2. With my dressers they wrapped them well (great) but lifted them down the stairs instead of using a dolly. While that might seem like a great idea, they lifted them by the tops which put a l of stress on the tops. I found a couple support blocks from the inner part of the dresser in the drawers once I looked in the drawers. Again, great move, great movers, but just a couple things I would improve on. I would without question have them move me again, so I think that's the highest recommendation I can give.

I was looking for a movers very last minutes(same day) to move from an apartment. The manager (Paige) worked hard to get a crew to handle my situation as quickly as possible and she was very helpful. Dave and team were skilled and swift in loading, moving and unloading all my belongings with high quality care. I strongly recommend their services and will be using them for my future moving projects. Dave and team did an excellent move for us, value for money! They know how to carry heavy and fragile stuff efficiently. I was very happy and could not have been more grateful especially since it was short noticed.

on the day of the move only one mover shows up the other decides to call in so they had to get someone else to assist. They got a u haul truck that was too small and we had to make 2 trips....they complained the entire time regarding how many floors etc when that was all in the description before hire. they kept taking breaks and the move was took entirely too long. They broke both of my dressers and my sofa set is all scratched up. I am very upset with the entire move and the quality of their work. I will never use them again!

The moving crew had to deal with non-stop rain which made things more difficult than I would have liked. There were many things Rent-A-Vet did very well: they were able to accommodate a late schedule change. They crew was friendly and professional. Junior, Jay and JT showed up 15 minutes early for the move, which I appreciated. Things that could have been improved upon. They could have brought a bigger truck. Ours was a temporary move from a 2-bedroom home to a 3-bedroom duplex while awaiting new home construction. As such, we had a pod to be filled with storage items - roughly 55% of everything we have went into the pod, which Rent-A-Vet did a superb job of packing. Not everything we had left to move into the duplex fit in the truck. This was a big frustration for me because it meant making several car trips over the next two days to get the remainder of our stuff. And the kicker is - the only appliance we moved was a small deep freeze. All other appliances, stove, fridge, washer/dryer, - stayed with the house. I was charged retail price for moving equipment - TV boxes for flat screen tv's; moving blankets; and tie-down ratchets. Kind of sucked, but okay. Finally, while I was happy with the crew and I respect how hard they worked, I wished they would have been more careful. Several nicks in the kitchen chairs; broke the hutch off my computer desk and managed to break the frame on the window to the back door of the house we vacated. Moving houses is never fun. Rent-a-Vet did a good job overall. Will probably use again moving from this duplex to our new home in three months.

On the first leg of the move they showed up and did a average job (when we unloaded, found lots of missing pieces to furniture ). Took longer than normal so I paid more but kind movers. Then the following week on move in day to the new house the nightmare happened and I should have listened to the reviews… on our most important day….moving in day-I had everything set up, people here to help, pods delivered and I got a COMPLETE NO SHOW!!!!! Yea, read that again. We are busy kind, respectful people (oh who tip Well too) who work and needed this done today! I scheduled long ago and I double checked every few days to make sure this was a go. Do NOT trust your move on them. I’m very upset. Save yourself from the stress and find a company and just pay more. Just imagine if you had to be out by a certain time to meet closing contractual requirements and this happened…..

Be very careful if you are selecting Bellhop Movers. Quoted six hours and took almost 12 hours for a very unprofessional crew to complete my 2400 sq foot move by 2am the next day. Never wrapped any of my furniture: 2 foot dent in my stainless steel fridge, used my furniture as step stool, mud on my office furniture, threw my golf clubs on the floor and that's just a fraction of the damage they caused to my house. Didn't set up any of furniture, appliances; dumped their moving supplies in my house and front lawn. Two days later, still no resolution and manager won't call me to explain what happened when I have been extremely fair and considerate. Select someone else unless you are moving your dorm room furniture.

These guys were amazing. I had 3 guys try to move a refrigerator and couldn’t get it done. Googled these guys, saw their review and came out the next morning. We tried to get it out the door for an hour, these guys had it out and on the truck in 7 minutes!! They will be our go to anytime we need to move something! Great team, great attitudes and very friendly!!

The guys did an excellent job moving some furniture for me. Given it was a tight fit into my basement these guys did everything possible to not damage the walls or my furniture and they had all pieces into the basement in no time with no damage!
