Mrs. Kear's SAT tutoring played a key role in my acceptance to Duke, my dream school. After four years, I came to Mrs. Kear to edit my personal statement for medical school. She still remembered me, and was a pleasure to work with. Without her, I would not have felt confident enough to submit it. I completely recommend Mrs. Kear for any SAT tutoring or editing you need!

Mr Nelson tutored my sons for several years through high school GCSE and advanced A level mathematics. He was extremely patient and encouraging. My sons excelled in mathematics and achieved excellent grades because of Mr. Nelson's outstanding teaching methods. I highly recommend him as a motivating and enthusiastic tutor who understands the needs of his students. My sons and I are eternally grateful to him.

My daughter has made remarkable gains as a math student. Mrs. Cindy goes above and beyond to ensure that she understands the math lesson from the previous week and the upcoming week. She is also has a very reasonable price and goes above and beyond in each session. Hands down she is the best tutor available in the Durham area.

Howard worked with my daughter on the ACT. She had taken the test two times and never been able to get above 22 composite. After 7 weeks, she took the test one last time and raise her score to a 26 composite. She was so happy. She’s a good student in school, but doesn’t test well in timed situations. We continued to work with Howard on college essays and applications. Our family is very happy with the results.

I am an older adult voice student who has been working with Dr. Warren for several months. I contacted her initially because I wanted to get my voice back in shape for choral singing after not being in a choir/concert chorus for many years. She has been wonderful to work with! -- always positive, with a great sense of humor and lovely mezzo soprano voice as well-- giving me vocalises and songs that are expanding my range slowly but surely. It is especially helpful that she can demonstrate vocal techniques with her own well-developed voice, so that one can both observe mouth positions and hear desired sounds. With a doctorate in Musical Arts and more than 30 years of experience in voice training, choral conducting, and church music ministries, Dr. Warren has been able to answer every musical question I've ever asked her, and add to my musical knowledge with many other details about composers, musical scores, and repertoire. On occasion, she is enjoyably assisted in her teaching by her husband's beautiful red eclectus parrot in the next room who says a friendly "hello" or injects a whistle (of purity to be envied!) into a student's scale or song. I can't imagine any student who would not benefit from her encouragement and teaching style.

Courtney demonstrated all of the qualities above while working with my teenage daughter after high school. She coached her on how to set life goals, prioritize her education, find work and maintain a healthy living style, all to her best advantage. My daughter has considered Courtney to be a warm and highly supportive person and one who has had a big impact on her life. Courtney's perspective, objectivity and honesty in her consultations have been invaluable. We have been very pleased and grateful to have worked with her.

I have been working with Jill for a couple of months so far (and I'll keep working with her in the future). I'm originally from Spain but when I moved to Raleigh a few months ago I realized that, even though I had a good level of written English, my communication skills (listening and speaking) were not good enough. I reached out to Jill in order to help me out with this and from the very first moment, she pinpointed my weaknesses and prepared tailored lessons that are really helping me to articulate much better, speak more fluently and reduce my strong Spanish accent. Jill is very approachable, flexible with her student's needs, very committed and she has a great command of the language. I really like that she doesn't follow a book in her lessons and prepares ad-hoc materials based on my specific needs instead. Moreover her lessons are really enjoyable. I was able to see how my communication skills improved after a few lessons. In summary, Jill is being instrumental in my integration of the language, therefore I strongly recommend her as the great English teacher she is.

took Spanish from Pam for several years about twelve years ago. The excellent approach using multi language avenues ( ie. auditory , visual , oral ) helped facilitate what I wanted and needed to learn...learning the way I could best absorb...which was so less frustrating to me....her patience was refreshing and therefore encouraging for this slow learner!!!!!!! Only a fool would pass up this great language learning experience !!!!! Pam from Center Point , Texas

Mrs. Batista is AMAZING! I was given her information by the school my daughter attends to try to get her caught up in math. She worked for weeks with my daughter every Saturday morning. She has made her feel more confident in her abilities to do the work. She always encouraged my daughter Destiny to keep trying, and not to give up. She taught her how to effectively use different strategies to solve the problems. Destiny absolutely hated math before working with Mrs Batista. Now she has excelled in math and has recently been asked to be tested to see if she is academically gifted. Thank you Mrs. Batista for being so patient, kind, encouraging, and caring!!

Steve provided me with tutoring services for the GRE. I was very nervous about the GRE because math has never been my strong subject. I made an appointment with Steve and described what I was trying to accomplish (i.e. pass the math portion of the GRE!). I brought a number of problems and math areas that I was having difficulty with. We went over each and Steve did a great job explaining it in a way that made actually made sense. Once we exhausted my questions and concerns, Steve created new problems that were quite helpful. The funny thing is after all that practice I actually scored higher on the math portion of the GRE than the verbal! Long story short, Steve was a huge help and provided a positive (and at times fun) session. I took the GRE, was accepted to graduate school, and am actually in class right now!

We had a fabulous experience with Caryn over the summer. She made great progress with our son who has dyslexia in a short period of time. Caryn was always well prepared with quality lessons that incorporated our son's strengths to improve his weaknesses. He always left her feeling good about himself and really enjoyed the hands on/interactive activities incorporated throughout the session. We only left Caryn because of the long commute from our home which couldn't be sustained through the school year. We would highly recommend her tutoring services!

Silvia has been teaching me Spanish for over a year and I couldn't be happier with my experience. She is a native speaker, and most importantly, she has a deep understanding of modern language teaching methods and the necessary emotional conditions for students to be successful. Teaching Spanish is clearly a passion for her. She constantly challenges me not only to learn the grammar and vocabulary of the language, but to use the mechanics in creative ways. She draws on all kinds of materials, including movies, short stories, and improv games and gets me to think critically about what I have seen, all while using Spanish. She is flexible and curious, and lessons are always fun.

To Whom It May Concern: June 18th, 2014 I am writing to recommend as highly as possible Dr. Raymond Vazquez as a tutor. I am the mother of two children who were in middle school in 2008, a 6th-grader and an 8th-grader, and Raymond tutored both of them in a manner tailored to their difficulties and with great professionalism and results. My daughter Dawn, the 8th grader, was struggling in her math class, having trouble thinking critically about the word problems they began giving her that year. She would read the problems too superficially and plug the numbers she saw into formulas that didn’t necessarily apply to a given problem, yielding random results. She had earned all As and Bs through the end of 7th grade and had tested into early algebra I, but she failed the first math test that had these word problems and I was worried that she might fail 8th grade math. My son Noah presented an even more difficult challenge, as he was not only failing 6th-grade math and science, but had been diagnosed with oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD) and was unruly in and out of class and very difficult to teach. I saw an advertisement for Ray on a bulletin board in the supermarket and I was immediately impressed that he had a science doctoral degree, that he accepted students with behavioral problems, and that he offered customized lesson plans. My children needed that! Also, his rate was very reasonable which was something my family required at the time. I knew Ray was going to be great with my children within minutes after he entered our home. He chatted easily with both Dawn and Noah, and praised Noah for a clever joke he had made – seeming to sense what an ODD child needed to avoid an immediate power struggle! He worked with Noah first, starting with math (fractions) and then moving to science (the solar system). Ray determined the level of Noah’s knowledge in both areas quite quickly, and keeping the mood friendly and respectful, Ray zeroed in on Noah’s misconceptions, starting at a more basic level – the level of his current knowledge -- than was assumed in his current homework assignments. Ray made learning about fractions fun, along the way teaching Noah something more advanced about prime numbers that he encouraged Noah to share with his math teacher. At the end of the session, Noah felt proud of his progress and he was somehow easier to manage that evening. Dawn was a more natural student to teach, but her status as an advanced student (she was taking algebra in 8th grade) was threatened by her performance in class. As with most students in Florida, Dawn had been “taught to the tests” she had to take regularly, the FCATs. Reasoning about word problems eluded her because she had never developed critical thinking skills for numerical reasoning despite her high intelligence and strong work ethic. Ray quickly determined that she couldn’t mathematically express simpler concepts stated in words, and build up her ability to do so rapidly and effectively. Her math grades improved dramatically in only a few weeks. I couldn’t recommend Ray more highly. If you would like to speak with me further please contact me through Thumbtack. Sincerely, Pamela F.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

      • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
      • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
