Bobby was great! He took his time doing the job making sure it was done right. He also cleaned up the areas affected by his work. I am fully satisfied with his work, punctuality, professionalism and appreciate his patience with my questions. Bobby was also helpful with other minor asks I had related to other electrical outlets around my house. Needless to say he will now be my goto guy and his prices were very reasonable. P.S. He does work outside of electrical like plumbing and other handy house work!

John did a great job for me, and at a reasonable price. I also had an added on issue with frozen pipes which he helped me with while he was working on the project (replace faucet) that he was hired for. He also noted another issue with the plumbing under the kitchen sink which he addressed as well.

I just want to thank Mike Theodore of Septic Designs of NH for their excellent response time in taking care of my customers when I need them. I am the owner of Snedeker Plumbing and Heating. I feel as though Mike and his crew are part of my team. It's important for me to be able to refer my clients to Mike knowing they will receive quality work at a fair price.

Justin was very quick in responding to my need for a hot water replacement. He never tried to upsell me on certain things I may have considered and never talked down to me considering I knew nothing of what needed to be done. Justin came out the very next morning and was able to complete the job within a few hours (which included traveling to get the parts he needed to do the job right). He took the time to explain several issues he saw with the venting and power vent. His pricing was very reasonable compared to 5 quotes that I received. I will use him again for my HVAC and plumbing needs in the future.

I sent the request through Thumbtack for help with two small projects, expecting to be put in line behind a backlog of customers for at least several days, as small jobs like mine are often not treated with high priority. I was so pleasantly surprised to hear back within a few hours, and had the appointment booked right away that day! The plumbers showed up early (a complete miracle in my long years of experience with contractors) got right to work, had all the parts they needed, and even made several helpful suggestions that made the project even better than expected. I couldn't be happier with the service from Hilliard. Many thanks for providing exactly what I needed, so I could finish the next steps of this project!

I feel fortunate to have been referred to Advanced Plumbing when my water tank burst. Keith is everything you want in a plumber but never expect to get. Professional, skilled, timely, and priced fairly. Aside from saving my butt in emergencies, I hired Keith to install a natural gas heater in my garage. Five stars. Call them and see for yourself.

Stephen was punctual, professional and genuine. I hired Stephen for a leaky outdoor faucet (spicket). Scheduling was very easy and flexible with him, he even came in the evening after I got home from work, so there was no stress there for me! He arrived on time, even put on the shoe protectors to wear in the house while he worked. Very considerate and professional. He even tossed the ball with my dog a couple times! When he was done, he walked me through all the changes he made and ensured the problem for me was resolved. His work quality was impeccable, he even put on a different valve so it was easier for me to turn on and off the water. Will definitely be calling him for any future plumbing needs!

Matt has done a wide variety of work for my family for many years. He has the ability to look at a problem or project and get the job done best way possible. He uses other qualified trade workers to assist where needed, i.e. electrical or plumbing licensed. The projects have always been done right the first time and look great.

Chochrek Plumbing and Heating completed the gas, heating and plumbing renovations for our recent bathroom and kitchen remodel. From our initial walk through and estimate, to the completion of the gas and plumbing work, Eric made a daunting and anxiety causing project feel manageable. Our remodel required the removal of multiple cast iron radiators and piping, installation of an extensive baseboard heating system, moving and re-piping of gas lines for our stove and dryer, the removal and replacement of rotted and leaking pipes and the re-plumbing our kitchen sink and dishwasher, bathroom shower, washer, toilet and vanity; all of which were moved to new locations during the project. Throughout the experience Eric was prompt, polite and upfront. Having had multiple estimates before choosing a company, we felt our bid was fair and that we were given honest answers regarding the work required and the timeline that would go into completing the job. We could not have been happier with the job Eric and his crew did and how comfortable we felt in communicating our vision to him throughout the project. We would absolutely recommend Chockrek Plumbing and Heating!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

    • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
    • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
    • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
