Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Contact single-item movers near you to find out what services they offer, and get free estimates.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Contact professional furniture movers near you to get estimates for your move.

Inter-building move. Furniture was moved with no issues. There was a delay in arrival due to late COI. For future, if there is a delay, please advise so we can arrange a new arrival time. But thank you for a great job.

Kadeem and Ed were wonderful! They were professional and efficient. They moved my very heavy furniture up a 3 floor walk-up on a very hot summer day. I expected this job would take at least 2 hours, and they finished in only 1 hour. I highly recommend them to anyone who needs a mover!

U-move was the perfect solution for our move. We needed some heavy lifting to get furniture up into our apartmet and they were responsive, very reasonably priced and professional throughout. They handled everything with care and set it up just how we wanted inside the apartment. I'll definitely be calling them again when the time comes.

These gentlemen were able to respond promptly to an emergency situation at very short notice, on a Saturday evening. I would recommend them for any type of move. As for furniture assembly I did not use that service, but in the future I will use them and certainly recommend them.

Jason’s team did excellent work! They picked up our furniture, wrapped it to protect it and moved it to an upstairs and then it it all back together in record time! Everyone on the team was kind and they were so efficient! Would definitely go back to Jason again and recommend 10/10!

The job was to move some furniture from one floor to another in an elevator building. The two guys arrived promptly and were courteous. However, I was not very pleased with the quality of the job. They dragged the box spring on the floor and were very haphazard with the sofa. Also, the dining table that required some dissemly and reassembly was not tighten properly. The chairs were dinged multiple times along the corridor. They seemed to be in a hurry and did not give the furniture the proper care I was expecting. They completed the task fast, but the quality of work suffered as a consequence.

Ron worked with me on two different heavy furniture/appliance moves. Both times he was professional, on time, and VERY efficient. He is super strong! The man knows how to move! The bonus is that he is an all round great guy. I also had the pleasure to work with Ron and his team of Rock & Elvis for a complete move from a 750 sq. ft. apartment to a 350 sq. ft. micro apartment. This included 1 move to the new place & 1 move to a storage facility. It was a super hot day--85* to 90*. These guys busted their butts. They wasted no time getting right to work and continued to work hard straight through the entire 6 hours of the move. Very efficient. They know how to work as a team and how to load a truck to maximize the space. A move can be very stressful, but Ron is a calming influence. His team is the same. We actually had some good laughs during the move. He truly is a moving professional. You can not go wrong hiring him. Thanks Ron for the amazing job. You made everything work so snoothly!

I must say Umed and his team did an outstanding job in moving heavy furnitures and boxes and such. They were very experienced in making sure that nothing gets damage. They packed in an organized manner. I’m very very happy with the experience. They also creatively packed some items that were not in the box. At the same time, he was educating me on how to pack efficiently with limited resources. I would highly recommend him and his teams to anyone. A par excellence job!

These guys are amazing!!! Travis was super responsive to my texts and phone calls. After multiple mishaps with U-Haul, Travis agreed the night before the move to come at a later time. Then, when U-Haul canceled our booking of a large truck and we could only get a small truck, Travis' team stayed later than the two hours I had booked and even took some of my furniture apart so that it would all fit in the truck. They literally saved the day with their patience, diligence, and care.

Sean and his crew were courteous and hard working. Pleased with the job they did packing the truck and lugging furniture down 3 flights of stairs. However they were 3 hours late for our original 2pm appointment because they were delayed by a job they did earlier that morning. Repeated calls/texts for an ETA saw their arrival time being pushed back by another 30 min multiple times. Feel like they overbooked themselves, and the delay significantly impacted our ability to finish moving, clean our apartment, and leave town on time. They finished their contracted 4 hours of work after 9pm and it took several hours more to finish loading the final items myself. While they treated our stuff with care and did great work while on the job, punctuality was a major issue.
