Ellen (Cella) did an amazing job for a party of 9 people at my house last Saturday. We had 11 courses, largely Italian food, and everything was excellent. She and I collaborated on the menu for a while, as I wanted to make sure that we offered things that all of my guests would enjoy. I had some special requests around using very little garlic, and Cella listened and hit everything that we wanted. She had great ideas, and was very mindful of creating a menu in which the dishes complimented each other. She prepared, served, and cleaned up afterwards - what an enjoyable evening. Plus, she's a lot of fun to speak with, as my guests and I enjoyed her company. Highly recommend and look forward to having her come back for a summer event. :-) Thanks, Anthony

I'd like to thank chuck and Maria for the great job they did on my son's engagement party! My family's a hard crowd to please when it comes to food (Italian) so I was very pleased when I received compliment after compliment! Everything was delicious. From appetizers to the main entree .. The eggplant Rolatini, chicken wrapped in bacon, penne w Vodka and my favorite shrimp scampi over rice were outstanding! I can't thank you enough for taking the stress off of me and enabling me to enjoy my company and knowing everyone was content! Let's face it, you could have the greatest party but it's the food that they will remember and talk about! Please feel free to use my name if you need a recommendation!

Chris came highly recommended to me from a friend that has used his private dining services in LA. I had engaged him on a formal dinner party I co-hosted prior to a black tie event the same evening. The other co-host and I were looking for more of an intimate experience held in her upper east side pied-a-terre. We hosted ten guests for a lovely, one of a kind Saturday evening lasting about four hours . Chris’ talent, work ethic, professionalism, and attention to detail was more than I could ever dream of. The white glove service evening consisted of a cocktail hour, passed Hors d’Oeuvres, and a sit down four course meal. The attention to detail was quite impressive as our guests were dressed in black tie so Chris took it upon himself to set the ambiance throughout the duplex with the proper lighting, music, and even suggested we all step out on the terrace to take photos to capture such a memorable evening. Pasquale, our waiter that Chris provided was even lovelier than his Italian accent. It was clear that he was incredibly educated in regards to the menu, cocktails, and wines which made it second nature for him to answer any questions and make suggestions. Pasquale also served as Chris’ assistant as he helped him with any one off requests as well as helped him clean at the end of the evening which was one of the best parts of the evening, to host a dinner party and not have to clean up afterwards. I will absolutely continue to use Chris in the future no matter the size or type of event. The bespoke experience he creates is truly divine. His ability to prepare and execute a cocktail hour, passed hors d’Oeuvres, sit down four course meal, concluded with a heavenly banana fosters dessert, all the while mingling with guests( when it was appropriate, of course), welcoming curious guests in the kitchen with open arms, impeccable attention to detail, and upbeat positive attitude made for a beautiful, successful evening that my friends and I will remember for years to come.

I found Bacco Caterers on Thumbtack. I was impressed with the five stars and the reviews, so I contacted Chef Lauren to begin to see if she was the caterer for us—and was she ever! Joyce and I wanted to include our friends and family in our marriage anniversary celebration in our Brooklyn home. We are novice Open House hosts and Lauren advised us re details we would never have thought of, including in our menu selections. Her staff, chef Amanda and sous chef Laura, created freshly made hors d’hoeuvres in our kitchen as the party occurred, superb finger food that was varied, interesting, and delicious! People, including us, loved it. The servers Karen, Tony, and Kevin, and bartender Elroy were unobtrusively attentive and friendly to our guests. Our party took place on two floors and the yard, and the staff kept the food appearing and the empty glasses disappearing with seeming effortlessness. Many guests commented on how comfortable they made everyone feel, contributing to the general sense of joyousness. In spite of our request for no gifts, or perhaps because of it, many of our 50 guests brought flowers. As soon as I was handed the bouquets, Tony would appear and would arrange them in vases I had directed him to when flowers first arrived. I was free during the whole party to visit with my friends and family. I, who am not a party-person, enjoyed myself fully during this celebration, and I am grateful to Chef Lauren and her staff for the many ways (including a fantastic clean-up) they helped make that possible. I used Tamara for my engagement party and she was fantastic! I had about 60 people and we started with passed h'ourderves during a cocktail hour in one room (she provided the staff and a bartender). While this happened she was setting up the buffet dinner in another room. She let me know when it was ready and then (timing was flawless) we moved into the second room for dinner. My friends and family raved about the food, which included gluten-free and vegan options as many had dietary restrictions. We had a French theme as I had gotten engaged in France and Tamara worked with me on a French menu, including a delicious chocolate-hazelnut crepe desert with fresh berries. She was totally on-point with timing, presentation, and professional execution, including proactively handling things like insurance with the building so it wasn't a hassle for me. The reason I initially chose her was because she was more reasonable than the other bids I received for caterers in New York but she offered identical services to what they had proposed and she went the extra mile the day of the event. I will definitely be using her again and I would highly recommend her to anyone. I am still receiving compliments on her food and the friendliness/professionalism of her staff.

Best experience ever. We needed a bartender for a private birthday party I was organizing for my boss and took a chance on hiring HighLife. Not only did we get a bartender but we got Tyler himself - the owner of HighLife. He was amazing. Our chef we hired from a different company was a disaster and Tyler took it upon himself to help serve the meals, set the tables with wine glasses, pour water/wine throughout dinner, not to mention making the best margaritas on the planet. Extremely reasonable prices with top notch service that is so hard to find these days. Next party I organize I will simply call Tyler. Whether I need a bartender, chef, catering, etc - HighLife will be my only phone call. Thanks for everything!

Ms. Puentes did a spectacular job for our film's craft services this past August. The food was exceptional - she provided 3 options for each meal, with a vegetarian option as one of them. Each day the cuisine was different and coordinated throughout the meals. Our favorite was the Italian day!! She delivered on time and within budget. I would hire Ms. Puentes again for all my film shoots' craft services needs.

Chef Greg and his team did an excellent job setting up and catering yummy foods at my wedding. Greg is very passionate in cooking... you will know it after you try his food. All my guests are still raving about the foods served that day especially the fish, braised beef polenta, and oxtail. The foods were not only delicious but also, illustrated remarkable artistic culinary skills. Stephanie was great in handling all the logistic parts, love the decor and end-result of the wedding venue. It was simply beautiful and elegant. Thank you for making my wedding day extra special!

I was asked to help put together a party in about 10 days for 50 people. I wasn't sure if we had the time to find a caterer to get the job done, with the elegance and style needed. Well, I am so very glad I found Creative Table NY! Peter and his staff were professional, courteous and creative, as their namesake says. He listened to our request to have small bites: American, Italian and Sushi. In addition to coming up with four warm hor d'oeuvres, he also provided sushi, Maki rolls and hand rolls, all the food was delicious! He was on time and helpful. He also created a beautiful menu on display to explain what all food was and most importantly fielded the many phone call, emails and questions I had. If you are looking for a caterer galore who uses local and organic food and provides the attention to detail you need, please contact Creative Table NY: you will be more than happy that you did!

Our experience with Harvest Specialty Catering and Jason was all that I could ask for. We chose this company for our daughter's barn wedding. Initially, Jason was willing to work with us for a limited portion of our event, something many caterers are NOT willing to do. After time (and a taste testing!) we opted to use him for all but dessert (we had a friend doing the cake.) We so appreciated his flexibility and willingness to work with us. He accommodated us and our changing needs at all points of our journey, even in the midst of his own challenges with equipment issues. We never knew about his difficulties until later, and not from Jason but the venue staff, as he and his crew pulled off a wonderful dinner. Our wedding guests were very complimentary of the food. On every level, we were thrilled with our choice. I would highly recommend this company for your event, whatever it may be.

Very professional, but also very personable & relaxed. Was prepared with ideas & settings. this was a small dinner party, about 20 people. the table setting had a Fall deco & was quite lovely. The food, some catered, some prepared by party planner, was delicious. The quests were very impressed. I would definitely request Mrs. Worthington's services again!

After speaking with two caterers who contacted me through thumbtack I was not imporessed by their professionalism and flexibility. Nick was different he never said no to any of my requests and put me at ease. I was surprised by how young he was when we first met yet he was inredibly knowledgeable and patient with my needs. The holiday party for the firm went very well even though the power went out halfway through! Nick's food was fantastic, especially the lamb slider and little raviolis! I would reccomend FIG in the future.

John Paul was an excellent caterer for my daughter’s outdoor college graduation party. I contracted him only 7 days before the event and he suggested a lovely, light summer menu that my guests thoroughly enjoyed. The food was prepared with love, had a great presentation and was delicious. We had an abundant amount of food that was kept warm and fresh throughout the evening. John Paul was kind, prompt and extremely professional as were his staff of two. I highly recommend John Paul and wish him all the best in his future endeavors. Ps. I will hire him again!

It’s not easy finding someone who can cater above quality meals in large amounts. Marita simply put has the best food, astounding punctuality and performed as the most professional caterer we’ve ever hired. I won’t even consider hiring anyone else but her from now on.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
