Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

For the past few months I’ve been doing some personal training at this gym. You can expect the place to always be clean, the machines to be well maintained and a good variety in equipment. For personal training they will pair you with a trainer best suited to your goals. With Jonathan M. you can expect professionalism, a different challenging session every time and nutrition/muscle development knowledge. The guy knows his stuff! Overall, my experience with this place has been very positive and I highly recommend it

Kristi is a true professional! She is very knowledgeable, upbeat and challenging in her workouts. As I am an older, lifelong exerciser I came to Kristi with a litany of old exercise injuries, (torn hamstring, carpal tunnel, shoulder pain) and she had a work around for every complaint. I would highly recommend Kristi to anyone who would like to be inspired and motivated to get in shape, stay in shape and be challenged. I feel very fortunate to have found such an excellent personal trainer on Thumbtack.

X-Tactics is not just a gym, it’s a family. The reason why your trainer, X, is different from the rest is because he cares not just about your health but also about you. This is not a trainer who is just doing it for the money. He looks at your overall personal goals and lifestyle and makes sure it work with you. He is also flexible with scheduling which is also super helpful for busy bees like me! I have came in sad before and he has changed the whole rest of the day around. Yes, you are there for working out but you don’t just feel accomplished after a workout it but happy too. X has a very professional but family oriented gym that makes him different from other person trainers. I wish I came to his gym first before I went anywhere else! The workouts are designed just for you, not just a broad workout... designed especially for you to make you better. You will get your butt kicked though so heads up and bring water!! 😁

I would highly recommend Justin for your fitness needs, he is well worth the money. I have recently gained a lot of weight and found that I couldn't lose the weight alone, so I searched best personal trainers in Albuquerque and came across Justin's profile on Thumbtack. Being female, I was a little reluctant to go with a male trainer, but Justin is very knowledgeable in all areas of nutrition and fitness regardless of your fitness level. Justin has been very patient with me, as I struggle with my part (the nutrition). Justin keeps me motivated and pushes me to work outside my comfort zone. I have already gained lots of muscle and am ready to commit to this lifestyle change. If you are looking for results, look no further, Justin is the only choice.

This was my first experience with a personal trainer, I had been highly suspicious of having someone who was going to judge my body, and make me get into protein shakes or weird diets, but Justin is none of those things. He is so cheerful (all day, everyday), optimistic, and kind. And he'll also totally kick your butt. He knows how to push you right up to your limit, without risking injury. I was nervous to start training because I've never considered myself to be athletic at all, but after the first day I knew that I could trust him completely to help me improve in all the ways I wanted. He's helped me feel so much stronger than I ever thought I would. He changes up the workouts every day to keep things fun and interesting. Justin eats, sleeps, and breaths healthy living....and the longer you train with him the more his lifestyle will rub onto yours. From the two months I've worked out with him, I've definitely seen a huge difference in my body, eating habits, and overall energy.

I was looking for a trainer for a few reasons. First of all, I was still recovering from a broken leg, and didn't want to hurt myself again. Second, I have scoliosis, and wasn't sure exactly what I could do as far as weight lifting goes. Finally, in the past, I've found weight lifting to be so boring! I was hoping if I got a better idea of what to do in the gym, it would be more fun. Justin turned out to be a great trainer, and after working out with him over many sessions, I can say he has gone above and beyond in addressing all of my concerns. He was also reasonably priced. He met with me for a free consult initially, which I always look for before I hire someone. He was also able to meet me close to my home, and even for workouts, he was able to be flexible about where we did them. During the training sessions, Justin always made sure my form was good, and I never got hurt, even though he pushed me pretty hard. (I appreciated that because I wouldn't have done that much on my own.) Justin knows his stuff and he's also just a good-humored, engaging person to be around. Each workout went by quickly. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a personal trainer!

Rob has been my trainer for a little over a month now, and I can see and feel the results. I am down almost 25lbs, my cardio is getting better, and I now squat more than what I weigh. He is very educated, well-versed and professional in every aspect. Not only is personal training affordable it comes with meal prepping and 24/7 support. Not once has he made me feel ashamed for having cravings, rather he helps substitute my needs with a healthy and guilt-free alternative. Rob has been so flipping fantastic, I strongly recommend him to any individual wishing to take the first step to a better, healthy, and fit lifestyle. He has changed the way I feel, look, and eat and I cannot wait to see where my journey goes with his support! You have nothing to lose except a few extra pounds and gain confidence back!

UPDATE: I initially wrote a 5 star review within the first week of training because Shelby told me to review early on. I should have waited because it ended up being extremely disappointing. Let me start off by saying although Shelby is very kind and pleasant, her time management lacks. I understand personal training allows you to make your own schedule but only to some degree. As a trainee you have to be flexible as well which I definitely tried to be but it was hard to do with last minute changes-all the time. When signing up you pay for a package for the entire month prior to beginning. She set my macros and gave me homework the first week. We started out strong and then by the second week, she had been rescheduling/cancelling last minute. At first it was for reasons that seemed to make sense like her kid was sick or a funeral. Then it just stuff like oil change wasn’t done yet and just rearranging and changing times hour(s)before the confirmed time. I work night shift and I usually have to set an alarm to wake up early to go train. So when my alarm goes off, most of the time I would wake up to a text saying she couldn’t make it work today after we had confirmed times but that we’ll definitely get our sessions in the next few days or the following week. Then I wouldn’t be able to fall back asleep and I’d be a zombie at the hospital. Then it continues to get rescheduled to the point where I don’t see her for a week or more. I wanted to train 3x a week consistently and it took all of June and all of July to get my 12 sessions in when it should have only taken one month. Everyone was telling me this was highly unprofessional as it is a business and she can’t just cancel on people like that. I kept making excuses for her because when we would get our sessions in, they were productive. I willingly paid for another month because she said she would be better and that this month was a fluke. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and then I had trained the first session of my new package. We then planned to meet on a particular day and time and she had mentioned it multiple times leading up to the day because she had cancelled again the day before. I texted her when I woke up before work asking if we were still on. No response. Texted again 10 minutes later. No response. I thought she was probably training someone and I’ll just go ahead and get up and go because if she cancelled she always texts me. I show up and she’s not there. Business is closed. No text saying she couldn’t make it or anything. I was so upset. That’s where I drew the line. I immediately told her we were not a good fit and that I wanted a refund for the remaining 11/12 sessions I had paid for. She proceeds to tell me I showed up without confirmation (which wasn’t true) and that she does not do refunds and never will. She offered a free session and said i had to finish the package or lose my money. I was not going to make a big deal out of it but not getting a refund for sessions I haven’t gotten is absurd in my opinion. I wanted to share my true review so others who want consistency in a trainer do not go with Shelby. She was talking about implementing a 24hr cancellation policy yet she could not even hold herself to it. I will say if she works on not constantly rescheduling last minute and cancelling, the workouts themselves are great. She does a fantastic job of keeping you motivated during the workout. If you want to go once a week or once every now and then, Shelby will be a good fit for you. If you are training to really see a huge difference that needs consistency, my experience was not great with her. I don’t know if I caught her at a bad time but regardless I don’t think any paying customer should be treated this way. I understand there are two sides to every story but this is my side. I did not want to leave a review like this but she left me no choice. I would want to know if anyone else had an experience like this when looking into trainers.
