Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Searching for a personal trainer to help you reach your goals is a daunting task. If you’re like me you’ve spent years in the gym, convinced you can do it yourself. Eating chicken breasts, chugging protein shakes and utilizing all the bro science you’ve collected over the years. Then, 10 years later you look in the mirror and you look the same at best. That’s it you say, it’s now or never, time is passing by and your goals are still nowhere in sight. It’s time to swallow your pride and get a professional to help. Are you with me? Yeah? Good. You don’t need to wade through the sea of subpar trainers and d-bags; I’ve done that unpleasantness for you. Since you’re reading this you’ve found the golden ticket, you’ve found IFBB Pro Nick Antico. Being an IFBB Pro doesn’t necessarily make you a great trainer, though Nick in fact is, rather it tells you this person has discipline. Discipline is imperative when paying someone for personalized service, this discipline shows in many ways and especially with his punctuality, Nick is always on time. While Nick is a professional bodybuilder he is able to train all experience levels and for all different goals. No need to be intimidated, I’ve been comfortable telling him my goals and never once felt judged, in fact he’s been nothing but supportive in all my goals. Before I found Nick I trained with many different personal trainers and countless online training programs from big name trainers. All of them were pleased to take my money and stand next to me while I trained in the gym but that was about it. There was no personalization involved just a person telling me to eat more and try harder. Nick takes the time to get to know you in an initial consultation and asks all the right questions that will help him train you the way you need to be trained and help provide you with a supplement/nutritional program. He will assess your physical strengths and weaknesses and build a training program around you to optimize your training and therefore your success. When you’re in the gym training together he is professional and watches every single movement to identify any flaws in your form. He has a keen eye for noticing the small things that go missed by most. This is where the science of training comes into play; Nick has studied under some of the best and most respected coaches in the industry including the late, great Charles Poliquin. If your trainer doesn’t use the word science in his curriculum then you need to run, not walk, to Nick. I’ve been a gym rat my whole life, hell my father owned a gym and yet Nick has found countless flaws in my form and exercise selection. On top of that he has identified multiple imbalances such as my hips being rotated, etc. Honestly, his abilities are uncanny and unlike anything I’ve ever seen especially at his pricing. Nicks not only a great personal trainer but he’s also great with online training. I’ve done remote check ins, sending him videos by phone and his dedication to helping is just as if you were in the gym together. There’s simply not enough space to justify Nick’s abilities and what he can do for you so make the jump and call Nick, you’ll be glad you did.

I have enjoyed working with Dustin so far this year. When I researched personal trainers on Thumbtack, I received quotes from a few trainers. Dustin was the only trainer to actively follow up after sending his initial quote. While continuing my research, I discovered all the positive Thumbtack reviews he’s gotten, and I also found his public Facebook (RichterFit – Body Optimization by Dustin Richter) and Instagram pages, which contained helpful posts and videos about exercise and nutrition. It’s Dustin’s dedication, evident in the reviews and posts, that made me choose him as my personal trainer – and I don’t regret that decision. If you commit to the exercise regimen and meal plan, you’ll see results. I lost 13 pounds in about three weeks. Dustin changes up the exercises to prevent boredom, and his sense of humor adds levity to the sessions. I never thought I’d actually *enjoy* exercise, but I do, even on the days when I don’t see him. If you’ve ever considered making positive changes in your life, give Dustin a call.

I was looking for a personal trainer and found thumbtack and thought I would give it a shot. I put in my info and started getting emails, I was not sure who to choose but that's when Dustin Richter reached out to me thru the app, that automatically spoke volumes to me. He seemed to care about finding out what my journey was and he seemed to want to help me get there.. . He also offered me two free sessions to see if I liked him and the training he had to offer.. I really liked the sessions and he was point blank if you want to be successful follow the meal plan I give you and you have to do the work.. It has been a month and a half and I have lost 18 pounds! I could not be happier with Dustin, his training, and always being available to answer any questions I have had to help Me along.. I would highly recommend giving Dustin a try, he rocks!

Picking a personal trainer for the first time can be intimidating. As a gay 120lb 5’ 7” male, I’m not exactly comfortable around bulked up “gym types”. Also I didn’t want some roided out meat head yelling at me and telling me to eat vegan, etc. I picked Mick because he has excellent pix on instagram and it's clear he's a seasoned "foodie". After 6 months training with Mick, my weight is up 25lbs and I know I could have not picked better. Mick has transformed my life and I’m thankful every day. He is a friend, mentor and life coach. I have much more confidence now and my friends and family cannot believe my transformation. He encourages me to live my life and enjoy things even if it’s alcohol or cheat meals on the weekend. Even after 60 sessions, Mick has something new for me almost every time so I never get bored. He’s social media savvy and records sweet workout videos for me to post on social media. Mick is easy going and is LGBT friendly. He’s extremely reliable, has never canceled or missed an appointment and is very professional. Mick uses a legit trainer-only gym so forget about working out at Planet Fitness next to wannabes.

After doing extensive research I decided to go with Christina as my trainer and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made for myself and my health. I’ve tried weight loss on my own many times and have never been successful, but with Christina I’ve seen huge results and it hasn’t even been 2 months. Her workout plans in and outside of the gym are top of the line, and she tailors them for your personal goals. The guidance she’s given me on nutrition and clean eating is what has helped me see results so fast. Sessions with her are fun but yet I still get a great workout in! I would recommend her to everyone.

I started with Dustin in early January 2020 with the starting weight of 195 lbs and body fat of 27.2% (per my scale). Oh boy! The first few sessions were really tough and at one point, I was questioning whether I should give it up. However, Dustin is always there motivating and checking on me with responsible eating and exercising. He provided basic guidance on my diet as well as supplements to support my weight loss journey. With 8 sessions, I was able to drop the weight to 182 lbs and body fat at 17.8%. I am excited where this journey will take me to, and I certainly recommend him if you are looking for a personal trainer. Thank you Dustin for so patient with me.

Kyle helped me get into shape with a great diet and workout behavior. He was flexible and fun to hang out with. He provided me with the motivation and commitment I needed to make this a lifestyle when I only had a goal in mind. I've lost 30 lbs in 3 months and my body is reshaping itself each and every week I am seeing personal results little by little. It takes time to go from zero shape to a great shape and i expect that by the end of this year i will be in top shape, maybe sooner! I am thankful to have worked with Kyle and would recommend him to anyone who needs training and has a goal in mind. Thank you kyle!
