I wish I could blame the pandemic but I have been out of shape for a long time. I never made time for working out and experienced some body pain related to neuropathy that made exercise mentally and physically difficult. For so long I chose being lazy rather than being active. I made my appointment with John in hopes I would snap out of my funk but wanted to cancel before I even got to our first session. After our first workout and discussion, I was so happy I didn’t cancel. John has been so flexible and created a workout regime and schedule that works for me making this so easy to commit myself to. More importantly, he is incredibly encouraging and holds me accountable. Now, I leave every workout feeling better than the last even when they are challenging. I feel 100% at ease and confident working out with him, he makes it fun and explains everything thoughtfully and patiently. He focuses on my form and adjusts to my capabilities so I haven’t experienced any of the pain I expected, in fact, my joint and nerve pain have lessened since we started. He knows exactly how to explain things to me and what motivates me. It's only been 2 months but I already see changes and feel stronger every week. I feel so motivated to push myself and have learned more about physical health than I ever have before. He personalizes our sessions so they never feel stale or boring. I love that every workout is different, it challenges me and makes the time go by so quickly. I look forward to my sessions with John, not just because of the physical changes or my improved state of mind, but because he has shown me the importance of adding activity to my everyday routine better than any trainer or fitness coach has ever done. Whether it is working out, how I should eat, or post-workout recovery, John has guided me every step of the way. He has helped me understand and embrace the many aspects that go into a healthier lifestyle. I practice some of the more difficult exercises on my own which is something I would never do on a non-workout day. I am now conscious of my day to day activity and eating well. I cannot thank him enough for what he has done in such a short period of time. I have tried and failed at this so many times, but his passion for this and his personal touches with me have changed my entire perspective making this an easy commitment. -Amy DeGise, 33See more

Ryan Harden changed my life! Not only has my physique COMPLETELY transformed, I also FEEL AMAZING. Before, I felt sluggish, my self esteem was low, and I had a difficult time finding the energy to workout after an 8 hours work day. After just a couple of weeks of following Ryan’s diet and nutrition plans formulated for me I noticed change. My energy picked up and my mood improved. In 6 months I dropped more than 15lbs while putting on lean muscle. In a years time I had lost a little over 30lbs while packing on a significant amount of lean muscle. Ryan listened to me, my goals and the direction I hoped to take. Before meeting Ryan I was surviving but now, I’m thriving. Thank you Harden Performance!See more

I have had the pleasure of working with Kevin as my personal trainer for almost two months now and, in that time, I've made tremendous growth under his guidance and supervision. In just a short amount of time, I've noticed positive differences regarding my physical appearance (arms, traps, and abs to name a few!) and growth concerning my mobility and flexibility. Having Kevin as a trainer has improved my comfortability with working out and, for the first time ever, I've started to develop a positive relationship with exercise and nutrition. I appreciate that Kevin truly challenges me during every workout, but also genuinely takes the time to check in with me about how I'm feeling; especially since I have asthma and lower back issues. Kevin holds me accountable (something I need!), but has always made me feel comfortable, safe, and welcome (feelings I've never connected or associated with exercise and/or the gym). Knowing that I can workout around someone without feeling judged, ashamed, or embarrassed is such a relief to me as a beginner. Kevin is also available outside of each session to share his wealth of knowledge about fitness and nutrition with you. Having an accessible and available lifeline has been super beneficial as I learn. Kevin has helped me with my overall fitness, wellness, and nutrition goals, but has also done wonders for my confidence and self-efficacy. Already in two months, I've never felt better about myself. I highly recommend him as a trainer for anybody who is a novice, intermediate, or advanced exerciser.See more

Having had several trainers in the past, I can say definitely that Jeremy is an exceptionally skilled and effective trainer and demonstrates skills that other trainers just do not possess. Jeremy has great interpersonal and customer service skills and is a delight to work with. What really sets him apart, is his intricate knowledge of the mechanics of the human body and to intervene to achieve optimal functioning. Jeremy is perhaps as or more skilled than the physical therapists with which I have worked. He is constantly attentive to posture, subtle mechanics, balance, and monitors the effectiveness of mechanics (not just brute strength). Jeremy is excellent for any level of fitness or experience. I am a life long athlete that is recovering from severe illness and muscle atrophy. My partner is over 65 and previous hated exercise. In a short period of time, Jeremy has made tremendous positive impact in our physical (and mental) health and fitness. I recommend him with incredible enthusiasm.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
