Greg himself was over 2 hours late arriving to set up. He was supposed to arrive at 2:30 an food was to be served by 5-5:30. He arrived at 4:30 only to leave 15 min later because he received a call from his driver with the food saying he was lost and was having a panic attack. Greg and his sister left his niece, which was her 1st day on the job, (as she told me) at the reception to get drinks going, which she didn't do, that had to be done by my son-in-laws aunt's and grandmother and myself. My daughter's wedding was ruined. I am not being dramatic it was absolutely ruined. I didn't get to enjoy the reception nor did my son-in-laws mother because we were to busy getting coffee refilled and drinks and dealing with the driver who had come in thru the front door and told a guest how he needed to lay down because he was having a panic attack. So, while Greg dished out the food (which I was told some of the chicken was undercooked) uncles. aunts, and church elders were continuously checking on Greg's employee, which is ridiculous because they were there for a reception of their niece and nephew. Also, because of his lateness, about 150 ppl left because the wedding was at 4:30 and ppl were starving by 7:00 and no food had arrived. so needless to say her mother-in-law who paid for 300 ppl, only about 150 ppl actually ate. Greg arrived about 7:20 and food was served about 7:40. (ppl complained of the chicken being undercooked). I then found out, once the reception was over and cleaning up that Greg threw away about 4 trays of chicken, at least 4 trays of lasagna,(I saw this in 2 garbage bags that were half full of this food, and was told by a groomsman who was taking the trash out that he had taken 2 other bags just like that, he also took back the breadsticks he didn't use and took with him the green beans and salad that were left over. This truly disgusts me. This food was paid for and he just threw it away. he did leave 3 trays of chicken and 2 trays of lasagna, but threw away so much more without asking?? That food was paid for. I didn't pay for the food this was done by my daughter's mother-in-law. From what I understand Greg's response was to give her a $100 back and then credit towards her next event!!! Why he would think she would ever use him again is beyond me. His response was that in his contract, he's not responsible for what his driver does (he failed to respond to the fact that HE was 2 hrs late) also, that HE threw away all that food. He also said he'd already given us a big discount. That discount was because we had 300 guests (he had 3 ppl as his staff, which consisted of him, his sister and his niece who looked to be about 18 and it was her first time) and that was his excuse for not refunding her money back. The discount does not excuse the fact that HE was late, his driver was late, he threw away food, he didn't provide drink service (we did, aunts and grandma's and myself and her mother-in-law). When her mother-in-law said that was unacceptable I hear he threatened her with his lawyer. She wasn't even looking for a full refund which i believe she deserves, the very least she should be refunded for the 150 ppl that walked out.(she said she would have been ok with $500 back just for the gesture of admitting he completely screwed up our kids wedding reception) I don't now where this stands but I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS CATERER. I read his reviews and I met him in person. I trusted that he was going to help make my daughter's day special and something to remember. He definitely didn't make it special but it will be remembered. I understand things happen the driver getting lost, but none of this would've happened if Greg hadn't been late himself and there's no excuse for throwing away that food.

Prestige Catering catered a dinner event for about 70 people. I ordered chicken marsala, specifying "low salt" and it was excellent. Many people complimented the chicken. The vegetables were fresh and flavorful and the desserts were excellent -- not one left! Salad was fresh. I was very happy with the food and appreciated the pleasant and helpful staff sent to help us on the night of our party.

Overall the quality of food for the price is very affordable. We got the appetizer and wedding buffet dinner package for $15.99 a person. Decent quality for the price. We also got the mixers package and had them in charge of our alcohol. They picked up all of our alcohol for us, chilled it, transported it, and served it to our guests. The service at the venue was good and the bartenders were friendly. I was told however, that the catering company would clean up/take out trash and also return alcohol that was unused to the store. Neither of which happened. They were supposed to also bring black linens, cake plates, and forks which did not happen. My coordinator had to go purchase some last minute. Entirely too much food left over which felt a little wasteful but I'd gladly have too much food than not enough. The main reason for my 4 stars is because of the lack of communication. For starters, we had a private tasting scheduled and needed a different date, the person we spoke to this time had no knowledge of us or our contract let alone our tasting. We luckily were able to go to a group tasting instead. There were several instances where I would send an email, wait a week for a response, and end up having to call in order to get in touch with someone. I also called to give the final head count and make adjustments before the 14 day deadline, only to then get an email three days later asking for my final head count and timeline. Again, seemed as if they had no knowledge of my conversation three days earlier. Each time these things happened, the person on the other end was apologetic. A happy accident to the disorganization was we ended up with beef tenderloin instead of roast beef. We were ok with that too. I would recommend the company in general, especially on a budget, however, wished the communication aspect and organization would have been punctual and consistent.

Chef Maria and her staff went above and beyond my expectations for our Christmas office party at my home. Her menu choices were all so fantastic it was hard to choose!! She is very easy to work with and the day of the event she took over and never let me help sever or clean up, I enjoyed the fact that I only had to host. We even had a mini cooking Q and A before my guests arrived. We absolutely love Maria and her staff, she will be catering all my future events!

Big Red's catered our daughter's 1st birthday party and we could not have been happier! They were incredibly easy to work with, the food was delicious and the price was very reasonable considering the amount of food you get. I highly recommend Big Red's and look forward to using them for our next event!

Mikes Somkehouse BBQ catered our wedding gathering (post wedding) and it was more than amazing costumer service. They arrived on time, with everything we requested for, and the catering was exactly what we ask for. The BBQ was awesome, along with the sides. Plenty of food for everyone. For our next large gathering I would definitely consider this service.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
