Barb Regets of Class Act Catering was helpful in catering our party of 40 guests from beginning to end. When I first contacted her, she responded quickly to my calls & emails with questions regarding her services in a friendly & professional manner. Barb made suggestions in order to plan a menu that worked well for my event. She delivered all the dishes to our home, & also set up everything in her own sternos & serving dishes. After the party, she returned to clean up & pick up the sternos & dishes that she let us borrow. Her price was very reasonable. Barb's food was delicious! For our event, she prepared her chicken tarragon, cedar planked salmon, roasted redskin potatoes, green beans & asparagus, fruit bowl with dip, a house salad (with her own dressing), & buttered rolls. I definitely recommend Class Act Catering to anyone looking for someone to cater an event.

Chef Lisa was amazing! The food was absolutely phenomenal, but her personality was even better. Not only was she knowledgeable about the food and farms she gets her ingredients from, but her wine pairings amplified her layers of flavors to a whole other level. Her presentation made the experience of inviting a chef into our home that much more special. We will definitely be thinking of her the next time we have a small event!

Above and beyond would be one way I desribe the quality and service that I received from Gourmet Guy Catering. Matt and his team were kind, patient, and professional. Matt worked to tailor a menu to suit our wants and needs. So many of the guests at our wedding complimented how delicious the food and service was. The food was beyond what you would expect at a typical wedding. The chicken was cooked to perfection! The waitstaff were so attentive and willing to jump in wherever needed. One of the ladies even helped me carry my dress and an umbrella as I had to make a run through the pouring rain. It is clear that Matt and the reast of the team at Gourmet Guy are passionate about their work and committed to quality service. They are honest, fair, and talented.

Had great variety of textures and flavors all artfully displayed. We had an open house and chef prepared the hot appetizers throughout the event so they were served at the perfect temperature and the kitchen was filled with wonderful aroma.

Demond helped me in planning and catering a surprise 40th birthday party for my wife. Everything was first class! He thought of and took care of every detail to make the catered event at our home a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From menu design, outdoor tents with tables and chairs, and even a bouncy house for the kids, Demond handled everything and ensured all was coordinated and set around our schedules. On top of it all, his menu was spectacular, and the taste and food quality received rave reviews from all in attendance! Seriously, his food was some of the best tasting creations I’ve ever enjoyed! He even created a customized drink named for my wife in honor of her birthday. He literally thought of everything, and provided world-class customer service while cooking for the guests. Thanks for the perfect evening, Demond!

We ordered a going away cake for an employee. The cake was absolutely beautiful and delicious! The cake was decorated with orange flowers on white icing. The cake was white and lemon in four layers with a lemon curd fulling. Our guests were also able to take home to enjoy later.

An amazing personal chef experience. Chef Nova came to my home and prepared an amazing dinner for my husband and I on our anniversary. She was very professional, and ensured to make a meal we would enjoy. Chef prepared for us a fresh green salad tossed in a homemade Caesar dressing, roasted asparagus, creamy shrimp Alfredo alongside a thick juicy flavorful rib eye steak. My husband and I toasted our anniversary with a white wine sangria chef prepared also. Needless to say it was an amazing evening that we will never forget.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.
