Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Is it worth it to hire a lawn service?

Hiring a lawn care professional can save you time and money on your lawn. Professionals know exactly which products to use to solve your lawn’s issues, such as removing crabgrass or controlling pests. Many lawn care companies are results-oriented, meaning that they come with a guarantee to provide results.

If you’re DIY-ing it, you may save some money on costs. But you also might spend lots of money at the store that goes straight down the drain.

Contact the best lawn care services near you and get free estimates from several professionals before DIY-ing your lawn.

Is it worth it to hire a professional to mow your lawn?

Although hiring a lawn care company is more expensive than doing it yourself, it can be well worth the money. For starters, it saves you time and equipment maintenance, which may be justifiable financially. It also creates a more professional appearance. Plus, a pro can spot problems before they occur. This can save you money on expensive reseeding, aeration and other types of lawn repair down the road.

Contact the best lawn mowing professionals near you to start getting free estimates.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.

What is included in lawn service?

Full-service lawn care companies typically offer a wide range of lawn care services, including mowing, mulching, landscaping, leaf removal, tree and shrub care, and more.

Companies may offer additional specialty services, depending on your location and the type of business. For example, a company may provide seasonal maintenance services such as aeration, hedge trimming and weeding, while another offers pest control, seeding services and grub control.

We used Mr. Daugherty last season for our lawn care and loved the work he did. His team is on-time, efficient, and most importantly they did a GREAT job. I'm hiring them again for this year. I'd recommend them to anyone.

The scheduling was a complete nightmare but once they arrived, I was shocked by the quality of work they did. They cut overgrown grass in my flower beds and didn't harm one flower. They were sweet, professional and thorough. They even gave me advice to help me care for my lawn between visits. If you have patience, I highly recommend.

Brian came out to my properties and provided a quote. He normally charges 25 (per his initial Thumbtack quote) per property but due to it's length upon on site inspection quoted me 95 for both. I agreed to let Brian cut the lawns for these two properties. He then immediately sends a Venmo invoice, which I immediately paid. I texted him for estimated time of arrival and later he texts back with an ambiguous 2 hour time frame. He arrived without any inclination to greet me at the house until I step outside down the porch and to the sidewalk to meet him. Then he bulldozes through with his antique super wide lawnmower. Bigger necessarily does not yield better quality, it just saves him time. The grass cut patterns/lines do not come out neat (no grid patterns). Shortly after bulldozing through, he left the first house without a farewell with patches of uneven length grass and dandelions/weeds uncut (see attached picture I took right after he left) . There is no attention to detail. There was no post inspection or touching base with home owner. It was sloppy. Because I was concerned with the quality, I texted him "are you done with this house?". There was no response so I drove to my other property that he was to cut since it's only 6 minutes away. He arrived about 45 minutes later to my other property. I hear the words "just do enough" to his assistant. Again same thing. Bulldozing through and trying to avoid eye contact and any feedback that I would have. I finally walked up to him and raised my concerns of the uneven grass lengths and weeds at the side of the house. He tells his assistant to clear the weeds with the edger which took less than a minute. Then he tells me real property owners should have taken care of the lawns in March not April and this is what you get from Thumbtack. It appears that he was also agitated by the fact that I asked him to weed wack the weeds in the backyard which weren't spelled out in the Thumbtack proposal. All my previous experiences with lawn services handled them without any issues so I figured it's not a big deal, perhaps those 20 seconds it took the assistant to weed wack it was a big deal to him. Then he shouts that it should cost double the normal price to do all this. Didn't I pay about double since he charge 95 for two lawns that normally he would quote 50 (25 each)? I'm not a confrontational guy but when I strongly believe I'm being disrespected and wronged, I stand up for myself. So we had this heated discussion in front of one of my properties with my friends and neighbors wondering what the heck is going on. He then finally agrees to see what I'm talking about as I pointed out a patch of long uncut grass and then he points the finger at his assistant and says "he was supposed to edge and weed wack this, it's his first day".?!?!? The lack of professionalism that Brian possesses astonishes me. Then he continues to angrily and hastily proceeds to weed wack and edge the problem areas and at this point I had no respect or trust in his ability to deliver quality services and had him stop there. I'd rather pay triple for a real professional that prides his workmanship and respects the concerns of the customer. Lawn care is a service business, not a business to serve an ego. This has been my experience with Brian.

I am not sure how he can improve other than to not take on more than he can handle. My reason for saying that is this: Carlos came last Saturday morning to cut and edge our lawn. Supposed to start at 9:00, got to my house at about 9:30. He had issues with his equipment (both mower staying running and starting his edger). Several areas were missed. All along the back of my house and both sides, there was no edging done at all. Large clumps of grass where left throughout my backyard and he had been bagging the grass. I know he wasn't emptying near as often as he needed to. He sprayed Round-Up for the areas where we had clover (and we paid additional money for this). Now, ALL OF THOSE AREAS ARE DEAD!! I didn't walk the backyard before he left as I was very busy inside my home while he was there (MY MISTAKE). I had a birthday at my house that afternoon and all the kids had tons of grass all over them (even after I tried to rake some of the clumps out). He knew that there was a party at my house on the day that he cut. When my husband got home from work (at 9:00 that evening) and saw the job he did, he ended up re-cutting the grass on Sunday mid-morning and edged all the places that needed it. Needless-to-say, I sent him 2 text messages, 2 days apart, to say that we will no longer be using him and I haven't heard back from him, even though I asked him to respond acknowledging that we are going to continue our search for another lawn care company and were no longer requiring his services. I do not want him to show up at the time we had set before he left last Saturday because we have since hired another company to start next week. Maybe our yard was too much for him to handle, but he came out ahead of time, at my request, and said that it would be no problem at all. I wish him all the best, but we cannot use him or recommend him either.

This is a review update!!! After posting my original review, please see below. I received a lengthy text message from the worker who came to my home. He began to insult the condition of my home and told me that I needed to change the review. He then called me and began yelling at me, stating"With a house like mine I shouldn't be complaining, and I need to change the review." I also indicated that I would report them to Thumbtack. His response was "I don't care." If these are the type of people that are working for this company I would stay clear!!! I will be reporting them to Thumbtack! Came for initial estimate. I inquired about cutting overgrowth. Took one look and quoted $100. After he completed cutting yard looked at overgrowth again and increased quote to $200. I am very busy and was unable to cut overgrowth myself so I agreed to have him cut it once. Scheduled appointment for lawn cutting as well as overgrowth trim. He informed me that he would be out of town and he would send one of his "workers". The night before I explained to the worker what needed to be done. The next day he arrived, said he didn't know what I wanted done, and complained about the work. He also indicated that he would charge me $900 to do the job and it would take 3 days. Lack of professionalism and lack of communication.
