Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Amazing. Michelle truly is an amazing person and an even more amazing dog trainer. I was lucky enough to find Michelle on Thumbtack and she responded to my initial message right away. I had never had a trainer for my dog before and was very worried that I would find a dog trainer who was expensive and ineffective. I had neither of those problems working with Michelle. My dog made a lot of progress in the 4 weeks training with Michelle. She did a great job of getting me involved with the training so that I would be able to continue training my dog even when she wasn’t around. Michelle’s love for dogs was clear to see, especially when my very unfriendly dog took to her within minutes of meeting, something I didn’t think was possible! I am so greatful that I was able to find someone as awesome as Michelle to help me with training my dog. I will continue to work with Michelle and recommend her to absolutely anyone who is in need of a dog trainer!

My Dog Molly ( A Bluenose Pitbull) took to Edward immediately. I had an issue with another trainer who Molly was not as comfortable around, who knew but it can happen. Edward was knowledgeable, gave me tools to use and helped me better understand dog training. I recommend Your Dog Trainer

She was kind and patient. We have two dogs with two different needs. She showed us how to train both of them on the same day. She spent as much time as needed. I highly recommend Bad dog to Good dog!

My dog, Bella, is very reactive - pulling on the leash, barking at people, lunging, etc. Walking with her was very unpleasant. Since starting the dog training with Dawid, the progress she made is amazing!! He knew exactly what Bella needed and helped both of us! We both enjoy our walks now and she walks right by people with no reactiveness. Definitely recommend Dawid for all dog training!!

She gave us a new way of looking at how we interact with our dog. We now have concrete tactics of how to approach training our dog. We got through this all in one session. We have more work to do with our dog, but we're off to a good start.

Sandy showed me a lot of training exercises to work on with my dog. She also easily solved a problem I was having with my dog's sudden aversion to putting on a leather harness. Sandy brought along a Roman harness to try on my dog. I had no trouble using this type of harness, and am buying one for him.

It was a very good experience. We learned more in one hour of training with Robert than we did while going to Pet Smart for their training classes. Robert is very knowledgeable, professional and courteous. What is most important is he really likes dogs and believes in what he is doing. His training has been very worthwhile and we are very pleased with the decision to continue with his training sessions.

As new puppy owners we were looking for someone to help us to understand our dog better and to provide us with tips and tricks to house train him. Mark did an excellent job guiding us through our first months with Milo! Mark has a great knowledge of dogs needs and behaviors and he is willing to share it all! We were amazed how comfortable Milo was with Mark, and how quickly he started picking up on new commands! We highly recommend Mark to anyone who needs help with their four legged friend.

We are first time puppy parents and our fur baby is a handful to say the least. When searching for a trainer, Deb immediate won we over by asking to talk via the phone. She breaks it down so we can understand his behavior from a dog's mindset. She is very invested in our mental health and our puppy's overall well being. Highly recommend!

I am so happy that we hired Deb to help with our puppy! She was able to provide us with a ton of information, tips and tricks ! I have tried other puppy training classes, but this was a much better. Our dog was able to learn much easier with the one on one instruction. We were also able to focus on specific areas that we had trouble with. I will be using Deb for future lessons !

Daniel has been working with my 9 month old dog and I for about 3 weeks now, and just in that short amount of time I’ve seen real progress and results. My dog has issues with recourse guarding, biting, and overall aggression towards me. I thought I had tried everything until my first session with Daniel, who went into an impressive amount of detail to explain my dog, and my relationship with her. Not only does Daniel know his stuff, but he also goes out of his way to be there for my dog and I, outside of our sessions. He’s followed up regularly via text/ email to see how things are going, he’s gotten on the phone with me a handful of times to answer my questions, provide guidance, and additional help when needed. He’s also gone the extra mile to ask for videos during the week so he can evaluate my dog, and provide me with tips for improvement outside of our sessions. (Something you don’t often find). He’s extremely thorough, actively listens to our needs and goes above and beyond to help. I can also tell that he has a genuine care for my dog and I. Unlike many trainers I’ve looked into, he doesn’t require a set in stone amount of sessions, but rather leaves room for flexibility based on client needs, and the progress made as time goes on. This to me shows a genuine passion for helping his clients. I’m very excited to continue learning from Daniel and seeing what great improvement we can make!

I appreciate this business more than words could say! I have a Blue Heeler/Australian Shepherd who I thought was super reactive but actually just needed extra guidance and training. Emily really taught me how to communicate with my dog and some tools to make my every day life easier with him. Completely worth the money as it has decreased my daily stress significantly. Thank you all so much!!!

We love Michelle! She has made such a difference in our home after just 2 weeks of boarding our new puppies. Before her training, they were going to the bathroom in the house constantly. We were desperate. Now they are MUCH better behaved, and most importantly, they know to go to the bathroom outside. They even happily get into their crate when it’s time for that. Michelle uses only positive reinforcement, no punishment. She has a genuine love for animals and a passion for training. Fortunately she also offers dog-sitting in her house, so our puppies will get to see her if she has openings when we go on vacation or away for the weekend. She’s fantastic, and we’re so happy we hired her! - Bill and Annie Hill

Deb was so awesome with our pup......and us! She came over and helped us figure out how we are communicating with our dog, and ways to fix the issues we were having. She also doesn’t make you feel bad at all which is what has happened when we went to other training places. I can’t wait to practice what we learned and meet up with her again for our next lesson. She was awesome and I absolutely recommend her!!!!

During our first phone conversation Deb provided me with extremely useful information and I immediately knew she was the right person to help me with my energetic puppy, Luke. During our first session, she spent time learning about Luke and our interactions with him. From there she was able to provide us with training and outline a plan to help us better manage Luke’s energy and his emerging alpha personality. It is clear that she has a lot of experience a true love for dogs. I’m looking forward to my follow up session!

A complete disappointment, we set up an appointment to train my small female dog out of some behavioral issues. The day before the appointment I never got confirmation from them and the day of I waited and waited and got nothing from them. Sent them a message asking what happened with our appointment and here I am months later writing a review because they didn’t even had the decency to message me back. I contacted them because of the amazing reviews they had but they have truly left a sour taste in my mouth. I wouldn’t recommend.
