Math Made Simple has done a wonderful job tutoring my son. I am currently on my second time using them. The first time I used them to help my son improve his SAT math score, which he raised by several points. Now, I am using them again to help him earn a higher grade in Algebra 2, as well as earn an even higher score on the SAT. The tutors are prompt, helpful, and friendly. They have made math much easier to understand for my son, and I would highly recommend using this company.

Bob is awesome! He tutored my 17 year old son beginning late in the school year with Algebra 2. Before this, my son had very low test scores and had pretty much given up on the class. We found Bob on Thumbtack and hoped it would help, even though my son was less than enthusiastic. Right from the beginning, Bob had a very good "read" on my son; his personality is more about football, fishing and hunting than academics. Bob picked up on that and right away, my son felt at ease and open and enjoyed talking not only about algebra but also the things that he loves. With the tutoring, we had some low points, my son somewhat refusing to meet, not getting his paperwork ready so that they could review, and all the other excuses that kids who dislike school use to get out of doing the dreaded work. But through all of this, Bob stuck with us. The best thing about this is that after 12 years of sitting through award ceremonies at school, my son had all but tuned out and pretty much knew he would never receive any academic recognition (the only award he received in the last 12 years was one for athleticism in 2nd grade). When his algebra teacher came up to give her academic award, he was playing a game on his phone and not listening. Apparently, she described a young man in her class as the "comeback kid" and was awarding the certificate to him, for his amazing improvement! I wish that I could tell you more of what she said, but he wasn't listening. He thought, when he heard his name called, that he was in trouble! So, to summarize, Bob is amazing in his approach to young male learners (and most likely, everybody else, too) who don't want to learn LOL. We are very glad to have found him!

Kevin has been tutoring my 9th grade son for many months for Algebra I. He helped bring my son's grade up from failing to a high B, about 30 points. He has also started working with him on Physical Science. He now tutors my 6th grade daughter in math and science. He is very patient with my children and helps them understand the material they are working on. He gives my husband and I feedback after each session on how they did and their progress. Kevin is professional and always timely. He is also accommodating to my family's busy schedule. I highly recommend Kevin.

Reference (will provide direct contact info for further questions you might have): "Even though my children have daily French at their school, they are receiving a great benefit by their time with Anna. Certainly hearing a "native tongue" helps their ennunciation in particular when they speak French and roll their "Rs" with that great French flourish! There is also no comparison to the amount of learning that occurs by the personal attention that a tutor is able to provide. Anna seems to accomplish this in a way (through games and activities) that engage my children and hold their attention and imagination even after a full day of school; this, to me, is very telling and quite an accomplishment. I would highly recommend giving the gift of the French language to children (the language of Diplomats!).I am happy to speak to anyone personally or via email with particular questions!" -Teresa, Charleston, SC "Thank you so much for the great week Sophie had at Fun with French camp. She and her friend absolutely loved it and ran around the house speaking French for the entire week. She is now so excited to take French at school. After the skit that you performed, she was so determined to sing in French that she now has a CD with simple French songs on it that she practices regularly. I especially appreciate you working with us for the class schedule!" -Michelle, Sullivan’s Island, SC "My 8 and 11 year old children attended the Fun with French summer camp. They have studied other languages, but this was their first French class. They had a lot of fun with Anna. She was able to make the language come alive for them. Immediately following the camp, we went to Paris for 10 days. There was no doubt that the children had learned a great deal during the camp about the language and culture of France. No, they weren’t fluent in French, but I am sure that they had a fuller experience because they felt so “connected” to the people around them. They were certainly very excited when they ordered their first croissants with success!" -Mary, Mount Pleasant, SC "Wonderful, kind, intelligent, helpful, supportive. all of these words describe Anna as my personal French tutor. She is very patient and understanding, and she thoroughly answers my questions. She is willing to supplement any curriculum you need to use, or she will make a custom curriculum based on your needs and skills. My French speaking, listening, and grammar skills have improved exponentially with Anna's help. You will not find a better French tutor. She has been such a blessing to me. Merci beaucoup, Anna!" -Ashley, Gainseville, FL

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?
