Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a wedding officiant during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The safest way to conduct a consultation during COVID-19 is virtually. Ask wedding officiants near you if they can have a phone call or a virtual appointment over video chat. If they can, make sure to ask them any questions you have about upcoming work. Discuss what precautions, if any, they have in place to ensure safety. You might consider asking if they accept digital payments or if they can complete the work remotely, without any in-person contact.

Do wedding officiants offer remote or virtual services?

Reach out to wedding officiants in your area, and ask them if they can offer a remote or virtual ceremony. Some officiants may be willing to meet in person while maintaining 6 feet of distance, while others may prefer to conduct the entire service over the phone or a video call service such as Skype or Zoom.

Familiarize yourself with the social distancing rules in your community, city and state, and move forward only if both you and the officiant are comfortable with the arrangement.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a wedding officiant when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a wedding officiant when social distancing, ask if the officiant can offer remote services. Some wedding officiants are choosing to conduct services virtually and/or stand more than 6 feet away from the parties. Discuss possible arrangements with your wedding officiant, and familiarize yourself with your local community guidelines, as well as the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. Only move forward if you and the officiant both feel comfortable.

You may want to implement extra precautions, such as using digital payments instead of exchanging cash, sanitizing all involved spaces and waving instead of shaking hands.

Can I use digital payments to pay for a wedding officiant?

Ask your wedding officiant if they accept digital payments. Many professionals are accept payment via Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Apple Pay, Zelle and other online platforms. Professionals may be more willing to switch to digital payments during the COVID-19 pandemic, as this is typically considered safer than using cash or credit cards. You can see which digital payment options officiants accept by reviewing their online profiles.

Does a wedding officiant need to enter my home?

This depends on the location of your wedding. Unless the ceremony is being held in your home, a wedding officiant will not need to enter your home before the ceremony. Some couples are choosing to stand outside or go to a vacant public place, so the officiant can conduct the ceremony while maintaining 6 feet of distance. Ask your wedding officiant what kinds of arrangements they offer, including virtual or remote services.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.

Barbara was an amazing officiant for our wedding. She was everything and more that we were seeking in an officiant! We did not get married in a church however we wanted to bring our faith into our ceremony and Barbara did an excellent job in making this happen. In addition, Barbara was extremely understanding and was a key player in making our day such a success.

We enjoyed having Rev. Jackie officiate our wedding. He was very professional, and officiated our wedding on a very short notice. When we contacted him he was very prompt with his response. He contacted us to find out what we needed and how he should dress. He was very sensitive to all our needs. He lives in Wilmington North Carolina and we are in Charleston South Carolina, he drove all the way for us. He is the best. I highly recommend him without reservations.

This wonderful man drove four hours to come marry us. I could only pick three words to describe him, but all and more describe this wedding officiant. He was kind, caring, punctual, professional, excited to help and so much more. I couldn’t have asked for a better wedding all because he was there. Thank you so much for everything!

Barbara was wonderful as our wedding officiant. On VERY short notice, she was able to accommodate us. Even in the face of an encroaching hurricane, with reversed lanes, and her own storm preparations to attend to, she made it to our house to perform the ceremony. She had written the most perfect vows without even knowing much about us. Our ceremony was extremely informal and included our dogs. Barbara took it all in stride, making us very comfortable and taking care of all the follow up with the marriage certificate. She is a true professional, very organized, punctual and communicative, which we really appreciated. We highly recommend Barbara as a wedding officiant. She is awesome.

I contacted Rev. Ray Moore and his wife Karen the day before my wedding. My original officiant cancelled on me at the last minute and then I found From this Day Forward Wedding Services. I was so happy with the ceremony and I wouldn't change anything about it! If i could give 10 stars I definitely would because it is well deserved!! Thank you both for making my day amazing!! Julia M.

Helen was very professional, personable, and helpful with writing and revising our ceremony until it fit our personalities and needs. Our sunrise elopement could not have gone anymore smoothly with the help of her and her husband who took pictures throughout our ceremony! I would highly recommend Helen if you are looking for a wedding officiant!

Our wedding was planned for Folly Beach last weekend and outside (last weekend was when all the rain and flooding occurred). We had to make lots of changes through out the days. Lynsey not only made the long distance drive to Charleston; but then also dealt with terrible flooding to Folly Beach to marry us. She also did a fantastic job at the ceremony. We can never thank her enough. After all, it wouldnt have been a wedding without the officiant.

Kevin was an absolute joy and a dream to work with! He was so flexible when we had to move rehearsal to a different day and time due to COVID and my couple loved working with him. They said that they felt like they had been friends with him for years! If you need an officiant for your wedding, look no further! Book Kevin today!

Howard was absolutely amazing! I could have not imagined having a better officiant and friend for our wedding! With all of the craziness of 2020, he supported and stayed available for us through out everything. His ceremony options accommodate everyone. They are all short and sweet, which was perfect for our mid-summer, outside, South Carolina wedding. I would 100% recommend him to all of the my closest friends and family. Howard, thank you again for all that you did to make our day so special.

John went above and beyond in his service and time spent with us. John responded promptly to my many messages throughout the wedding planning process. He even took time out of his day to meet with us to get to know us prior to the wedding, and work on planning the vows/ wedding timeline. In addition, he attended our rehearsal dinner and helped make sure it went smoothly. He truly knows what he is doing when it comes to the wedding planning process! He kept our ceremony full of light, love, and God. He also is full of cheesy jokes which I love. :) He was incredibly personable, kind, and professional. It was an honor to have John as our officiant! Also, if you are local to Charleston, I would highly recommend also attending one of the Sunday services John is a pastor at. The community there was so welcoming!

Pastor John exceeded our expectations. He made our ceremony so meaningful, knowing just the right things to say. We felt like we had a friend officiating our ceremony. He interacted well with our parents and everyone just loved him. I would highly recommend him for anyone looking for a minister for their wedding. We feel truly blessed to have found him! Our prayers were answered!

Jackie did not show up to our event, despite confirming with him MULTIPLE TIMES over the past year. I even scheduled a phone call with him the Wednesday before the wedding, confirming everything for that Saturday in which he confirmed he would be attending. When he did not show up the day of our wedding, my coordinator called him and he said he didn't have the date confirmed...FLAKE. I have multiple email confirmations and phone conversations repeating this date. During our phone calls, I repeated this date as well. Completely unprofessional & inexcusable. I do not recommend his services as he's likely to not show up to the next wedding. In reply to his comment, NO WHERE did we say we hired another officiant. We were only ever planning on using him. Completely unacceptable.

Meagan was an absolute joy to officiate our wedding! I have zero regrets hiring her and would do so again in a heartbeat! She made the whole process so easy and not stressful, even though I was freaking out all day lol. Anyone who wants an over all professional, easy going, just all around nice person should give her a chance and hire her! Thanks again Meagan, we couldn’t have done it without you!!!

Dr. Pendley officiated my wedding on April 17th, 2021. He really saved the day! We had another officiant hired that we did premarital counseling with and had intentions of her marrying us, of course. After several issues of reliability and accountability we decided last minute (90 days out) to try to find someone else. Thank goodness I found Dr. Pendley! He was responsive and professional from the very beginning. He gave us several ceremony options to choose from so we could decide which one fit us. All of them were beautiful and different! I was only worried about him being from Savannah since we were getting married in Charleston. He immediately erased any doubts I had, as he typically travels to marry couples all over Georgia and South Carolina. During the ceremony itself, he was a delight and really illuminated the room! Typically I feel the ceremony gets overlooked by guests due to all the other excitement happening the day of the wedding. Not with Dr. Pendley! Several people commented on how wonderful he was, as well as how intrigued they were with the words he spoke. I even had people ask to hear the vows again later because they were so different, sweet and beautiful . I couldn’t have asked for a better man to share our day with us! Such a sweet soul. We would hire him again and again if we could!! Thank you for your time and professionalism Dr. Pendley. We will cherish your contribution to our day forever. **Will add photos at a letter date

Helen is truly one of the best. She could charge wayyyyyyy more than she does. I feel like we got a steal!! Also, we hired her last minute and she was totally on board. She looked the part, very professional AND really cute! Well spoken, calm, I could not have asked for more. We feel lucky that she officiated our marriage. Also, right after our ceremony we went to go take pictures for about 45 minutes, without realizing we forgot to sign the marriage license! Helen stuck around and waited for us and made us feel like it wasn’t a big deal at all. I only wish I had asked her to stay and offered her a meal at our wedding. THANK YOU HELEN!!!!
