I received tutoring lessons from Pamela and in all honesty I would've wished she was my teacher in High School. Thanks to her I managed to not only get high scores on the ASVAB but understand the subject I was tutored in and learn it for good. Pamela was very friendly and very understanding. I will definitely recomend her to people around me, and I recomend her to anyone. If she knows the subject you need help in I am certain she can be of great help. Really outstanding service.

My son loves working with Dr Adnan. He teaches in a way that my son truly grasps the concepts, and he can put them to work when he takes quizzes and tests at school. My son was struggling with his first year of Honors Geometry in high school, and he had a rough start. After working with Dr Adnan, he has gotten an A on his last 3 quizzes and tests. The experience is much better than I anticipated, and we will continue to work with Dr Adnan. He is a 5 star tutor!

Karen was a great SAT tutor. She had specific test taking strategies that took any guess work out of answering questions. We practiced the formula for doing the essay and I have scored 11 out of 12 on the essay every time I have taken the SAT. She taught me the way to take a standardized test which is much different than test taking at school. Thanks Karen for helping me get into the honors college at my school with my great SAT score!

Once we started the private lessons for our daughter, we saw her progress so fast whilst the fundamentals were reinforced in a consistent manner. Ms. Raji's deep knowledge and profound interest in the subject kept our daughter highly motivated. We saw her acing through all the classroom tests easily, and we never had to help our daughter throughout this year. We can't thank her enough for everything. The best of all was that she was able to understand my daughter's way of thinking and style and yet drive the thoroughness in the subject. Looking forward for more successful academic years.

AlSmith Education Advocates is an amazing professional organization! I have known Dr. Smith through her community work and her character is unparalleled. She is dedicated to her clients, consistently finding innovating ways to reach parents through her knowledge as a prior high school teacher and a college professor. She has incredible empathy and the ability to reach children where they are and bring them forward. She has tutored my child and inspired her to find that passion as well as involve her in mentoring activities. Dr. Smith is simply an amazing woman to be around and I am certain my daughter will have a promising future with her on our team.

I took my boys (ages 8, 12 and 14) to the first of the two session trial, kicking and screaming. They could not understand why I was taking them consider the fact that they all currently have A/B Honor Roll. Quite honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect but considering the trial sessions were free I thought I would give it a try. After the first session, just one hour... my sons were unrecognizable. They were excited about what they learned and beyond excited to use what they learned the next day in school. The next morning they woke up talking about the session AND asked when they were going back! We will definitely figure out a way to fight this into our family budget. To see them so excited about their education has energized me as their parent to cultivate and GROW!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:
