We had Lettuce Do Lunch & Dinner come out and do drop-off catering for our company Christmas party for about 60 people. I was too busy to ever eat any of the food, but all reports were that the food was delicious. I was very happy with the price, variety, and quantity. If you have heavy eaters you may want to buy for more than your actual number of people, but the amount given was very generous for the price. Pam arrived right on time and got everything set up in a flash. We'll probably be calling again come next Christmas!

Jan was great to work with from beginning to end. After a complete remodel of our home I was not ready to have to prepare food for 20 for my husband's company holiday party. Jan was quick to respond to my inquiry and easy to communicate with through email (my preference). They arrived on time, explained everything to me so I could be a better hostess. All of our guests loved the food and especially the steak biscuits!! Yum! We will definitely use them again in the future and recommend to friends. Thanks!!!!

We hired Beyond Details to cater my wife's birthday party. Brandy was supportive and very easy to work with prior to the event. On the night of the party, the food was ready on time and delicious! After the party, leftovers were boxed up and the room was left spotless. I could not have asked for anything more. If you want great food and an easy to work with caterer, go with Beyond Details.

I hired Ludlow Catering for our firm's early Holiday party and couldn't have been more pleased. They did an impressive job decorating our foyer and open office space, like we'd asked. The food was excellent, our clients loved it. They over-delivered on all platforms and will certainly re-hire for like jobs in the future. Highly recommend.

Celeste, the owner is very professional, courteous and very helpful in creating a menu to make your party perfect. The food is delicious, using the highest quality and freshest ingredients, the presentation is spectacular. When Celeste arrived with my order, she assisted me with arranging the appetizers and preparing the table to look fabulous. Everything was perfect, the flavored lemonades were so refreshing too. I contacted Chef Casandra with a catering idea for a unique birthday party... an afternoon High Tea! She got right to work researching the traditional menus and history of High Teas. She was quick to respond with suggestions and took my initial concept to a whole new level! Chef Casandra took care of everything from the serving trays to rentals to the food (of course) and even hand-selected the assortment of tea offerings. Her creativity and professionalism are superb... not to mention, the food! Everything was so delicious! My guests left impressed, delighted and -- most importantly -- full! I will absolutely work with Chef Casandra again and will be quick to recommend her to anyone seeking an amazing catering chef. Thank you, Chef Casandra, for making my birthday one to remember!!

Gail has catered for me twice in the past year. She made box lunches for a Womens canoe trip, yummy sandwiches, hummus with veggies, a huge cookie all in a darling bag decorated for autumn. Recently she catered box lunches again, this time for 10 bridesmaids, mothers and the bride while the party dressed, took pictures and gathered in the bridesroom before the wedding. The lunch was amazing and Gail's creative flair adds a specialized touch ,which is unique to her business. Gail's catering, really ends up being a "a beautiful wrapped gift" to those she serves.

I have enjoyed lunch at the Curious Kitchen several times and the food was fabulous! In addition to a wonderful restaurant, the Curious Kitchen also offers cooking classes. They have been so much fun. It is a great learning experience. You leave with great everyday tips, delicious recipes, and the confidence to make the dishes you just enjoyed eating. I have participated in a date night and a team building Christmas party. How can you top great food, friends, learning, and laughter!!

We had dinner for 15 catered. It arrived on time and hot! Our guests raved about everything, but the buttery mashed potatoes were the star (in my opinion). Lots of flavor, not your typical flavorless catered fare. Can't say enough good things about the food and the business. The owners were very responsive and a delight to work with. This was the best decision I could have made for our family Christmas dinner. I will definitely use again!

Nicole and her team are FABULOUS! They catered a 60 person sit-down meal for a graduation party for me. The food was EXCELLENT and PLENTIFUL. The servers were over-the-top helpful and courteous - picking up my guests empty plates as well as keeping our buffet well-stocked the entire party. Everything I asked for was there on time and and the food was hot - all at a very reasonable price. I WILL BE using Goodness Gracious for my catering needs again. They made a party that could have been a real stressful event for me into a wonderful event where my guests were well-fed and impressed - and I was stress-free! Thanks Nicole and team!

At first I thought I could get things together myself, but I soon realized getting together an awesome wedding is a full time job! Aundrea took me on as a client and took a HUGE weight off my shoulders! She is so sweet and kind and took over immediately. You name it, she was in line with EVERYTHING, that makes a wedding “storybook” like my friend called it. The venue, the food, the photographer, the drinks, the bartender, the flowers, the decor of the venue in the colors we chose, the invites, the thank you notes, the seating cards, organizing the ceremony itself with the officiate, the timing of the ceremony and the music of the ceremony, the wedding parting gifts to the guests, decorating my house for the after party, OH MY GOSH, have I forgotten anything! JP took care of us and made our event the most awesome day of our life. Thank you JP and Thank you Aundrea.”

I sought to give my husband a personal and unique catering experience for father’s day in our home and reached out to Vee-Go and asked if they could deliver on my desire. They developed a menu for the occasion, mapped out the evening, and far exceeded my expectations having never requested an in home caterer before! The food was exceptional and the private chef experience was luxurious! I’ve literally recommended to all my friends vegan or not because the food is that good and experience that sexy for a date night in! My husband even shared their information with our job and they are catering the office’s next meatless Monday! We plan to use them for a family dinner party real soon

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
