Robert is a true craftsman. I could not be more pleased with the carpet, laminate, and vinyl he installed in my home. He and his wife Brandy also repaired my squeaky floors which were a big concern. A quality job at a great price.

The work looks amazing. Tim and his assistant completed our job very timely. I will definitely call Tim again for other jobs and recommend him to anyone looking for flooring or other remodel needs.

I've had Stevan of SD Construction assist me in 2 major home remodeling needs. He has remodeled 2 kitchens, created large additions, customized 5 showers/baths, replaced tile/carpet/vinyl to hard-wood/laminate flooring, made multiple built ins, and much more with high end but cost efficient materials. Stevan's service is truly the best I have ever experienced-detailed, efficient, creative, trustworthy, courteous and with integrity. He offers good advice and will not cut corners for the sake of time/money. Thank you so much, Stevan.

We had a difficult flooring and remodel in process and Erley came to the rescue! Erley was prompt to show up to quote our hardwood flooring install. He showed up on time and completed the difficult job in a timely manner. We were really happy we hired him, since we had started doing the install ourselves and found that the new wood was difficult to work with. We had ordered the Bruce brand pre-finished 3 1/4" wide solid oak 3/4" thick natural color wood from Lowes. We thought it was supposed to be the number 1 grade but realized after completing the kitchen and part of the living room ourselves it was a not first grade wood. With around half the job completed, we were exhausted and still had quite a few projects on the list. So we hired Erley and it was a great decision. Erley did a good job installing some difficult to work with wood and completed floors way faster than we could have. Also, the old engineered wood in the front room was glued down to the subfloor without any underlayment making it very difficult to remove. Erley was able get it all removed and install new subfloor boards in the areas needed. He did a great job and the floors are very even. After the job was all complete, he also agreed to come back and repair or replace any cracked boards (if needed) since that particular model of Bruce wood we ordered from Lowes seems to be more prone to cracking. We would definitely hire Erley again for hardwood, flooring, or carpet installs. He is professional and works hard to get the job done on time! We are happy with the finished flooring!

I recently bought new tile flooring for my new home. It is not often I write letters about my service, but when someone, Johny McQuiston of McQuiston Flooring goes above and beyond, I feel it's necessary to share. From the moment I met Johnny, he was extremely kind, professional and really "knew his stuff". Everything was right on target from the start date to finish date. I couldn't be more excited about the end result of my new tiled kitchen floor - it's absolutely beautiful!! Johnny's service, professionalism, knowledge expertise & kindness meant alot to me. A huge THANK YOU goes out to McQuiston Flooring. They were AWESOME!! In closing, I highly recommend McQuiston Flooring for your new flooring project - I give them 10 stars!!!!!! Edanielwell Miller is a wonderful guy. He and his son (who has the same great attitude as his father) laid a laminate floor on our second story. The price was the best, they showed up when they said they would and they were more than accommodating. The floor, shoe molding and stair nose looks wonderful. He was even game to take on the additional task of covering a big "box" in the room with the laminate. This necessitated some fairly intricate finishing work that proved to be a bit beyond his experience level, but nothing we can't live with. I would (and probably will) call him in a minute if I have more work to be done.

It's so nice that I hired recom LLC to help me finish the replacement for the hardwood floor. I was hesitating to decide on the laminated floor or an engineered hardwood floor. Mr. Amin is so patient and professional for answering all of my questions. The installers were so hard working with high efficiency. They finished the project within one day! The most important thing is they offered me the cheapest price! I am so happy to have them!

Jeff put in new laminate flooring in 3 rooms of my house (so a fairly large job). He showed up when he said he would and finished in two days. He cleaned up everything and was considerate of the fact that my dog and I still had to live there during the installation. My floors look great and I love them! Wish I had done it sooner!

One of our bathrooms was in need of an overhaul and updating, I contacted Jonn from Cumberland Carpentry to stop out for an estimate to remove the old flooring, put in new vinyl plank flooring, install a new vanity and a new toilet. His estimate was within our budget and we contracted him to complete the job. Our bathroom look gorgeous , the higher vanity and toilet certainly improved the look, the flooring install is perfect and it was completed in record timing. I am very happy with the work he performed, he was so neat and tidy and truly respected my home. thanks again for a job well done

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

          • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
            • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
          • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
            • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
          • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
            • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
          • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
            • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
          • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
            • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
            • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
            • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
              • Includes removal of the dura rock.
          • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

          • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
            • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
          • 620 square feet of maple floor:
            • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
            • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
              • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
