Replaced wood floor of upper deck. Good craftsmanship and attention to detail. Prompt. Worked 13 hours through yesterday's rain showers to get the job done before our expected big storms.

Quality: The finish they did was great! Matched other rooms very well. Getting a good texture match was important to me. Professionalism: Team was polite and courteous. Responsiveness: Joel always responded via Thumbtack quickly. I always knew the status of the work and when he thought they would be finished. Value: His bid was not the cheapest nor the most expensive. I find you get what you pay for -- and for the quality of work, what he bid was very reasonable. Punctuality: In general, very punctual. Our first day the team was a little late (got hung up at the supply store), but they hustled over as fast as they could. Otherwise, they finished when I expected they would. Other remarks: Popcorn removal is a messy process -- this case was no exception. While they did an admirable job covering the floors, and trying to minimize the impact, dust still got everywhere - even in parts of the house where they weren't working. There was also texture splatter here and there, but they cleaned it up without complaint. Expect that this process will require you paint your walls in the rooms where it is done. The ceiling will look so much nicer it will make your walls look awful. If you plan to paint your walls, wait and do popcorn removal first. :D They also were game to take on a little extra item here and there (we negotiated $$ as we went). Saved me from having to hire separate contractors later -- so that was a bonus. Having worked with a lot of sub-contractors and home improvement projects, the work was done very well. The dust / mess I can clean-up (and frankly, it was expected). Solid A overall.

Manny came out to give us an estimate to replace 7 casing windows as well as several other local companies. He was the only one that wasn't an over the top salesman just pushing to seal the deal while they were there. He was honest, straight forward and only gave us an estimate on what we were looking for, not what some salesman wanted to push. His estimate was very reasonable and fair. He did the complete install in a day and a half and went out of his way to do a couple requests and accommodate us. The windows look great, great quality and professionally installed. Outstanding job! Would highly recommend him!

Pablo does great work. I couldn't find a seam anywhere on the entire floor. He shows up on time, gets the job done and doesn't leave a trace of him being there. I couldn't be happier with the work and the price.

Okay so the job I asked for was admittedly simplified, but when Bill and Tony showed up they immediately sized up the job and began work immediately. They removed the existing cabinets and placed them in my garage for later use. Then they installed the new light fixtures, patched and painted the wall and installed the new cabinets. I was impressed at this point, but when the Master Electrician came to inspect the electrical work, I was amazed! My wife is so happy with the work that I have been given permission to hire Fixed again to install the old cabinets in my garage! Stay tuned, guys! And great touch with the door mat and shoe covers! That was the icing on the cake for my wife! Thank again!

Painting and staining concrete floor. Ronald was very flexible with my job (due to other contractors not finishing in time), very communicative and has a great attention to detail. He went over and above in doing extras that my previous contractors hadnt and made the place look amazing with the paint job High reccommended

I am very pleased with my new floors. Tom is professional, punctual and always willing to answer any questions I had regarding the sanding process. My floors were very worn down and have been refinished before. I had an estimate from another company and I was told that my floor can no longer be sanded. Apparently, it was sanded to many times which meant that I would need to have a new floor installed. Tom came, inspected my floor and told me that the floor can still be refinished. The finished floor came out beautifully, I truly appreciate his honesty and highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for quality workmanship. Thank you Tom 😊

This team worked hard, worked well and worked fast. I moved into a house and hated the color of the walls. I decided to repaint the entire house but knew that there were parts of the process that I would have to get a professional to complete. When Marco and his team came to paint the staircase, it was clear to me that I was in over my head and they gave me a quote to paint the entire house. The price was reasonable so I accepted. After seeing the first coat, I was immediately elated. The color looked great and the quality of the work was incredible. Their crew was finished in 2 days with a two-level house. They took great care to protect the floors, trim and other areas of the house. I highly recommend them and would definitely use their services again.

We are very pleased with the look of our bathroom. Felipe was easy to work with and did his best to make sure we got the design we wanted. We received quotes from several contractor between $8,500 to $43,000. Felipe quote was not the lowest but in the range we thought was reasonable for our size bathroom. Our project had several set backs which were no ones fault: The tub filler we selected had a design flaw, which required some redesign. The sink drains didn't work the way we hoped and had to order replacements. The tub showed up with a crack and we had to order a replacement. Felipe worked with us through each issue and did his best to guide us to a solution. One of the great things about working with Filipe was the fact he knows some very good subcontractors. The company he recommended to do the show glass, did a great job at half the cost other companies quoted for the same work. Plus we got a lifetime warranty on the glass and workmanship. With every project there's always the 90/10 rule. 90% of the work is straight forward and fairly easy to complete. The rest of the work is more tedious and requires time. There were a couple of areas I thought the work could have been better: The pony wall tile was not cut straight and left ragged grout edges (picture). The retexturing could have been better if not rushed (picture). The caulking around the tub, particularly behind the tub was very poorly done. For the price, I really don't have anything to complain about. This was our first project hiring a contractor to do a project. We learned some important lessons. 1) Create a check list of work items. This will help make sure there are no disagreements on what is and isn't part of the contract. 2) Inspect the work regularly. It's only your fault if the works not done correctly. 3) Don't pay until the work is done to your satisfaction. 4) Get everything in writing including the warranty. I can't say enough how happy we are with the new bathroom. I have other property in Austin and I will use Felipe for future projects.

Bobby Fiske has been helping me for several years now. He is wonderful and efficient help. He is always prompt and ready to go. He never wastes time and always finishes up my list I give him when he arrives. His charges are reasonable especially for the top quality of work he exhibits. I have found Bobby to be knowledgable in any thing I need him to do. Even before I had a heart attack about a year ago and he made my life so much easier in all the repairs he has done - fixing my sliding glass doors, making a small gate in my garage to keep my dogs from getting out, repairing my linoleum floors and he has fixed my plumbling, built book shelves, helping to organize my garage, yard work, cleaned my swimming pool, installed water faucets, repaired my bathtub water outlets, repaired, patched and painted outside squirrell holes in my house, caulked windows, checked and aired up my car tires, replaced and/or charged car batteries, installed a water pump in my bird bath, carried numerous heavy items for me from room to room, (and also repaired my handywoman mistakes) to name a just a very few of the things he has helped me with over the years. I've found that I can call him for anything at any time. Except for electrical work there is hardly an area he doesn't know about and if he doesn't he know about it he will research it and learn about it. I can't even begin to list everything he has done (and done well) around my house and property over the last four or so years. And I have trusted him enough to ask him for his good and thoughtful advise about many household repairs and similar matters on many occasions. He is always pleasant and cheerful and, best of all, trustworthy in any area of my house. He returns my calls or emails quickly and follows up whenever needed. I was so fortunate the day I found his business card on the bulletin board at True Grits in Jonestown years ago. I will continue to hire Bobby for as long as I have things for him to do around my house and property and will always consider him as a friend. A final note: on top of all his professional help he helped me one day by giving me a ride to the pharmacy when I couldn't drive after an auto accident, and, even after I kept insisting, he wouldn't take any gas money or payment for his time and trouble even though I knew he was losing valuable work time and income. I hired them to paint first floor interior. Not only did they move all furniture and all wall coverings but they moved most of it bask as well! Job was done very well and they priced fairly. Touch ups were done immediately and they started when they agreed to start. My only critique is that they were a bit sloppy not with painting just in general (I think they will work on that) but I would recommend them. Hard workers for sure.

James was very nice. I did not purchase the matching stair caps that matched my living room floor and my stairs were previously carpeted and so each step was slightly different and he took the time to measure each step and customize each one. I would recommend James for any wood flooring needs and will hire for future projects.

I asked Aaron to put a door on the master bathroom and to strip and paint the front door which had bubbling paint. The door on the bathroom is excellent. It opens and closes very smoothly and he did an excellent job in making the door fit in what was a rather small space. The front door was nicely stripped of red paint and sanded, however the paint job on the door could have been a little smoother. Aaron is very personable and listens to how you would like the job done. He worked very hard on my job and was punctual and completed the job in a timely manner. Over all, I was very pleased with Aaron's services and would hire him again should I need any other door work done

Jason Ewing with Trim Austin was asked to finish out a shed into a liveable space, sheetrocking walls and ceiling after stubbing for plumbing and electrical, installing a sliding door, a window unit and even creating closet. He did all of the flooring and went back to install the ceiling fan and doors. He then made it ultra nice with is speciality - trim and millwork. All were done per specifications in a timely and professional manner. We are totally impressed with the work of Trim Austin and would recommend Jason Ewing to anyone needing trim or millwork. Thanks Jason for making this project attainable - now my office away from home (in the backyard).

Joe really bailed me out. I had started a flooring project, but realized I wasn't going to be able to get it all done. I needed some one to keep going where I left off and also know that it would be done right. Joe came through in a big way. He got the job done and did a great job of it. He worked with me on what I needed and I'm even having him give me a couple other quotes for some work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
