Wonderful experience! We needed something as simple as getting plastic brackets off the roof line that were left on from Christmas lights. Able to schedule on our time and get it complete before HOA complained!

Needed sheet vinyl installed in the kitchen/dining room of our rental. A local big box store wouldn't do the job because the sub floor (which had just been repaired) wasn't up to their standards. Angel did it for way cheaper than that other place wanted. He is a perfectionist and does the job right. He was in contact with me as the job was progressing and sent pictures after he was done. He also repaired a fence and gate for us on the same property. He's honest and a hard worker and does the job right. Will use him in the future.

We had a 40 yr old 30'x30' garage w/ a loft that had to be torn down. In 2 days Erwin and 2 others took the garage down, hauled off all the sheet metal and lumber and cleaned the site of all nails and trash. They even cut out the old lag bolts from the concrete on my request. They are prompt, courteous and safety conscious. We now know who is going to replace our old deck and replace the roof. Good job Erwin!

Castillo was everything you want in a contractor. From getting their initial response to our post to a site visit and proposal to completion of installation, it took all of 1 week. They installed 6" seamless gutters with a couple of premium additions for literally 1/2 of the price of one of the big Austin gutter companies for the same product. They even moved our communication cables (something the other guys had said we'd have to take care of separately). I'd recommend Castillo to anyone looking to do gutter work.

I contacted Residential Improvement Services after significant water came into my home from a rainstorm and my builder told me it was a slim chance it would happen again and was fine as-is (???). RIS was very nice, honest and easy to talk to. He did a thorough inspection of the roof and vents and determined it had not been properly sealed. Additionally to the sealing he was open to a solution I had seen online for preventing the rain from coming in again by making a slanted vent pan. He created one for me out of sheet metal and I feel good that it, along with the sealing, will solve the problem in the future. Very happy I called him to come look at my roof/vents instead of listening to my builder.

Protech's pricing is very reasonable. I had them replace a fiberglass roof with a metal roof. They completed the job quickly and the quality of their workmanship is great. I will keep them in mind for future roofing needs.

Best Prices Roofing did a metal roof for me. I was given a very good price estimate. The job was done very professional. The job was checked on every day by the owner to see if everything was going well. At the end of the job, the foreman ask me to look and see if I seen anything that needed attention. I found a couple of minor things that they just had not gotten to yet. All and all the job was done very well and the price was more in line with what a metal roof should cost. I do not have any complaints and will recommend this company.

We have a sales contract for our house with an inspection addendum that required timely repairs to our air conditioner drain line, outside electrical wiring, interior sheetrock damage, and metal roof corrections. SmithCo gave us a timely estimate, finished the work in a timely manner when promised with quality craftsmanship, and charged a fair price. Their consistent practice of calling ahead to confirm the repairman's availability and arrival on the job site just made doing business with them that much sweeter. We will recommend SmithCo to our realtor to help our realtor's other clients with their house make-ready repairs.

Hill Country installed a whole new roof with additional ventilation, fixed an old ventilation pipe, and added gutters. Kevin was kind and knowledgable. Out of the 3 formal bids I got for my roofing project, Hill Country's was the best price for the quality and service I was looking for. They gave me a great warranty period on the work, did a great job, were quick, and left the site clean. Thanks!

My twenty-year-old asphalt shingle roof needed replacing. I thought to replace it with another shingle roof, but after speaking to Kress about the benefits of a metal roof and deciding it was within my budget, I opted for the metal one. I was happy that I did. The project took a little longer than putting on shingles, but what I am left with today is a work of art. As with any metal roof, it is a custom fit, solid, and looks marvelous. I am totally happy with the end result and would recommend that you call Kress and let him work for you too.

It took me 5 months to finally find Adam Bokmeyer at Winmeyer Enterprise's. I went through 2 horrible contractors before Adam came in and saved the day. I had standing steam metal roofing put on my home and the first contractor completely messed it up. The second contractor never showed back up for our appointment. After finding Winmeyer Enterprise's the roof came out half the price as my first quote and so beautiful! I won't go with any other contractor before calling Winmeyer Enterprise's first. Thanks again for the amazing job done.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
