Responded right away and was well priced and showed up promptly the next day. Took care of the plumbing job efficiently and was good quality work. Reason I am taking one star off the rating is because his workmanship on installing the sealant around my kitchen cooktop was inconsistent. Two sides were great the others were not and there was sticky sealant on some other spots on my countertop.

Kevin came to our office to help verify that we could install a portable dishwasher in our kitchen. He was very friendly and not only gave us the go ahead to install, but also gave us tips for installation in case we decide to do it ourselves. I'd recommend Kevin!

Thomas was prompt and thorough on the job I requested. I needed a new outlet installed in the kitchen. I left for the 10 minutes to get a new breaker for him and voila job done. Price paid was fair. I highly recommend him for any electrician needs you may have.

This is the second time I hired Manuel. Manuel was able to get the job started quickly and finished in short time. I had him paint my very old kitchen cabinets to give it some life. It feels like a new kitchen. He gave me a good price and a professional finish. I plan on using him for future projects.

Whole house interior painting including popcorn ceiling removal as well as painting kitchen cabinets. Good and efficient crew with reasonable pricing. Ms. Ross, the owner has design background and excellent advice on what works well in color selections. Very good attention to detail. In addition to painting, she produced a very competitive bid for tiling ~740 sq feet 12x24 of floor tiles. The tiling crew she provided installed the tile first with good preparation then installed tiles with very fine grout lines as requested. Overall, very impressed and would hire again for future work.

Jim Hyde cut an opening in the wall between our kitchen and family room to give our home a more open feel. This included the relocation of cabinetry, tile back splash removal, electrical rerouting, and lighting installation. His work was flawless, and he was always reliable, punctual, and trustworthy. Highly recommended!

Jose did a cement repair job for us and we asked him to look at our kitchen ceiling while here. He quoted a price and even though it was a harder job then any of us thought it would be he worked hard to get it fixed. It looks so much better! We would use Jose again for any of our home needs and repairs. I highly recommend Jose and his work.

Single word: Fantastic! I had an upstairs flood that damaged my downstairs kitchen ceiling and Joe was able to get it expertly matched with the rest of the open floor plan's ceiling. I worried that it wouldn't be possible to match it accurately over such a large area with it visible from all sight lines on the first floor so I talked to a lot of people- but Joe won me over immediately with his calm professionalism and good advice. I can sum up no higher praise than this: listened to the issues, explained what he was going, executed on what he said he was going to do, and did so punctually and on budget. When someone says what they are going to do, and then does it- you can't ask for better than that. I will certainly hire him in the future .

We hired Henson Home Solutions, LLC to do an extensive remodel of our home including new windows and trim, painting the entire interior, changing square room openings to beautiful archways, replacing all interior doors, adding ceiling lights to our dark living room and kitchen, installing beautiful barn doors between two bedrooms, and a total redo of our small outdated bathroom to make it look exactly like a picture I had fallen in love with. That included a beautiful tiled walk in shower that we just love. Henson Home Solutions is a great company to work with and we couldn't be happier with their work or give them a higher recommendation.

We had a complete kitchen remodel done in our 11 year old home. The experience with Chad & his team was awesome. He was able to assist us in turning our dream kitchen into a reality. All went as scheduled and they worked very clean from start to finish. My wife and I can't thank him enough. We are recommending him to all of our family and friends.

Chris helped me restore my 1965 vintage camper and did an INCREDIBLE job!! From the gutting, to the walls, to the electrical, plumbing, custom cabinets, the bed, closet, kitchen, custom butcher block countertops, there is nothing he can't do! I was so pleased with the finish product that so exceeded my expectations! So attention to detail and perhaps the thing that set him apart was his use space and managing my expectations. We had a few set backs on the build, but Chris was communicative and fair. The best part was how affordable and fair he was. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! 5 stars!

Cliff was very pleasant to deal with. We had him remove a load bearing pillar that connected the living room to the kitchen. He did a great job of making it look like the pillar never existed. Cliff was reliable in making time to come over when it fit our schedule. We will be using him again in the future for other remodeling projects that we have lined up.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
