Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

They did an excellent job but my move was way over my budget, I was moving 2 bed bedroom apartment (though I did not move 2nd mattress and bed) I had king mattress with box springs, 16 boxes and few kitchen appliances, rocking chair, toys and a storage shelf. It took almost 6 hrs to move and finally I got to know moving via elevator was time consuming, had I known earlier, I would have asked the movers to use the stairs which was right next to the elevator. Again Franco and the other person did a great job. I would definitely refer dfwmoving service to my friends.

Very nice, hard working guys. We moved from a 4 bedroom one story to another 4 bedroom one story. 2 guys filled their 28 foot truck to capacity but the move took 15 hours to do and we only moved 4 miles. I ended up with a scraped dining room chair and an inexpensive armoir's bottom came loose but that was all that was broken, so not that bad for a move. The guys did their best and were very nice. The price was fantastic!!!

Should have gone with another pro. I was told my furniture would be wrapped to avoid damage. It wasn’t. Two guys came out. Neither was moving at the same time. I was always looking for the other guy while one was moving. Both were moving turtle slow. Neither was moving as if we had a time limit. When we got to my new house I asked them twice to cover our new $2,000 door to avoid scratching it, that didn’t happen. My husband actually ended up covering it after he saw my irritation building. By the end of the 2.5 hours, I was extremely frustrated.

Tyler and his crew showed up promptly and began helping me move my larger items out of my apartment. They disassembled my furniture and wrapped it. Very professional guys and diligent workers. I am so pleased I chose them to help me move my items to storage. I will be definitely setting up another move with them when it comes time to take everything back out. I highly recommend this team and company.

These guys were great! Very prompt and even gave me a break on time since I had to end up going to get tools to cut the lock off of my storage unit. They didn't start the time until they started the move. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a good mover.

If you want the short story: Over five hours late for my appointment and bad customer service. Will NOT rehire. I apologize in advance for the long review, but I want future prospective customers to have an accurate picture of this company. I had never hired movers before, but after reviewing Cordobe and other movers on Thumbtack, I was confident that everything would go smoothly. They had the greatest number of positive reviews. Even though a few people claimed they were a little late, I had high hopes. I booked a few weeks in advance and received two emails immediately confirming me for two attival times (10:00-11:00 and 1:00-2:00). I had to call to ask which time was correct (1:00-2:00). A day or two before the move I received another email confirming. It was all going fine so far. The day of my move I was at my new apartment unpacking items I had taken over myself, so I called at around 12:30 to confirm the arrival time. The office said the first move of the day was running late but my movers would arrive between 3:00-3:30. (I had to reach out to them. This information was not going to get to me any other way. They were not going to go out of their way to give me a heads up.) At 3:45 I received a voice message from a guy on the truck stating they had to make two trips at the first move but that they were currently on the way to drop off the second truck load. At 4:45 I called his number back for an update, but he did not answer. I called the office and was told the same story. They were on their way to the second location to unload the truck for the second time. "There were only a few items on the truck." (Notice I reached out to them again for status.) As it was beginning to storm I questioned whether or not they would be able to move me, and the office said they had the supplies and would move me as long as the weather cooperated. After about another hour I called both numbers again. Both went straight to voicemail. I tried numerous other time. Still nothing. I began to panic and was already looking into renting a UHaul and anyone who could possibly help me the following day. Finally a little before 7:00, the mover on the truck called me again to state they would be over at 7:15, if I still needed them. I assured them that I did, and thanked them for heading over after the first move took so long. They wrapped my future and moved quickly. I asked them to please be careful with the antique furniture in my bedroom (drawers, bed frame, vanity). Upon arrival at the new apartment, the rain (that did not start until after I should have already been moved) made their dolly wheels muddy and wet. They tracked mud/dirt through out the living room on the brand new, two-day old carpet. They didn't seem to notice or care. After they left and I began to organize boxes, I noticed that my drawers had scratches on the front and a part on my bed was damaged. It was clear they did not take any extra care with these items. That all said: 1) They moved me in under two hours. They specify a two hour minimum. After such a delay, I expected a discount or at least to only be charged for the work they actually did. That was not the case. 2) While the movers were nice enough. They were rushed and did not care about my items. I understand they had a long/rough day, but I was paying good money for a safe, stress-free move. 3) The lack of communication was awful. I reached out to them for numerous issues and items. I was hoping they would be more forthcoming about arrival time changes. On Monday morning (my move was Saturday), the office called me and asked about the move. I explained my frustrations and the girl told me, "If I wasn't going to be flexible with my arrival time, I needed to be sure in the future to book my move as the first of the day." I see two issues with this statement: a) I had already come to the assessment based on the amount of extra time they were able to give the move before me and b) I do not feel I was "inflexible" by thinking an arrival time over 5 hours late was excessive for my less than two hour move. She offered little to no apology and blamed the frustration I experienced due to the lack of communication on me. I will definitely hire movers again in the future. However, I can assure you, it will absolutely not be Cordobe.

My overall experience working with Frank and his crew was exceptionally good. Moving crew was right on time and completed the loading and unloading tasks exactly in 3 hours as we had discussed. Frank himself was very good at assuring his crew would show up on time. Noting was broken or damaged during the move. Overall these guys did an excellent job.

The team did a great job with a difficult piece of work: moving a 450lb safe upstairs and anchoring it in place in its final location. Definitely recommended.
