Overall very happy with the services provided. I think they grossly underestimated the time it would take but I knew it would take longer so I expected a higher charge. Everything was wrapped so nicely for my move to storage, that I decided to leave the blankets on and simply pay for them. The guys were very careful with my antiques and I greatly appreciate that.

I had such a positive experience with Blue Mule in Oct 2015 when they moved me from my apartment to a storage unit until my new house was ready. A few months later my house was finally ready to move in. I contacted Blue Mule again to move me from my storage unit to the new house. They were fast, easy to communicate with and easy to book. On moving day, they were on time at the storage location. I was a little late, they were very understanding and patient. I don't recall their names, but it was a young Hispanic guy and a Caucasian guy. They loaded up, and went on to the next spot which was an apt complex, since I was having roommates. The apartments were on the third floor. They wrapped all the furniture that was requested to be wrapped. They even assisted with throwing out some old junk furniture and trash to the dumpsters. My roommates and I are all women, so that was really kind of them. They were able to fit all of my storage unit belongings and the apartment unit belongings into the truck they brought perfectly. They then made their way to the house. The Caucasian guy lived in my new neighborhood, so he knew exactly were to go. At the house, they unloaded fairly quickly and even put my bed together. They even installed the washer and dryer for me! Thank God! Because Lord knows, there's no way I'd ever be able to put those things inside the laundry room ( hey don't judge!) They placed the larger furniture items in the rooms and placed them where we wanted them. Overall I am extremely happy with their service yet again. The total move was maybe 4 hours. From picking up at the storage unit ( full 2 bedroom apartment W/ washer and dryer) to the extra stop of the apartment to unloading at the house, oh and assembling the furniture and installing the washer and dryer, the total cost was less than $400. I split it with the roommates, it was very much worth it. I highly recommend this company to anyone moving. Customer for life!

Dallas Best Price Movers was a spot on recommendation by Thumbtack. From the no hassle scheduling on one day's notice with Brandon, to the moving by Laurent and Lorean, everything was professional and helpful all the way. The guys were personable, cheerful, fast, efficient, competent, careful, protective of my stuff and totally cooperative about moving things in the order I asked for and placing stuff just where I wanted it in the storage location. They clearly wanted to please and made the move a 100% positive experience. I give them my highest praise! Betsy

Red Carpet Moving was fantastic in my move. They were fast and efficient - had my entire house loaded onto the truck in about an hour and fifteen minutes. My move had two stops: a storage shed and a house. Most of my furniture was going into storage, and I had some concerns about it all fitting, but the guys Tetris'd everything into the unit so well that there was space left over. When we got to the house, they were patient with me while I rolled out rugs and had them place furniture in specific spots. They didn't break anything. After they left, the only damage I found was a scrape on the frame of a mirror, which I can easily fix. Considering that they were moving 3 mirrors, a large flat screen tv, and a bunch of cabinets with glass doors, I consider that a great success. The crew was also very friendly and nice. I would definitely use them again.

Theo and his crew are top notch. We moved from a second story apartment (with a very tight stairwell I might add) and from a nearby storage unit into a small house locally, and it could not have gone any more smoothly. They took great care to protect our belongings during transport, and I really appreciated how well informed we were about the move. The crew was very respectful, and everything was as promised. I'm very thankful we could work with him and I'd like to give him my strongest recommendation.

The movers were reasonably prompt, friendly, and helpful. I would recommend them. However, they were a bit careless in handling and they dropped one box of fragile material after I had already cautioned them about it. They were fine for moving stuff from one storage to another, and the price was reasonable.

Hired Guidance Moving to move our business office to a new location. A team of 3 showed up and got right to work. They quickly disassembled our desks and wrapped them for transport. They were all very polite, hard working professionals. I often worry about such services when there is an hourly rate involved as people sometimes "milk the clock" but not these guys! They did not slow down until the job was finished. Everything was handled perfectly. The rate was great and the quality of work was exceptional. If you are looking for movers, look no further, these are your guys! I will hire them again in the future!

My goal was to move furniture from one storage facility to another residential location. Oasis showed up on time and picked up the furniture promptly. They did not however move the furniture to the exact spot I wanted as it didn't fit through the door. They don't disassemble anything and kept saying they had to leave so I didn't get one key furniture in its spot. They should have told me they don't disassemble anything up front, as other moving companies have offered that without me asking. I had filled out thumbtack stating I needed things moved upstairs and when I asked to move something upstairs to oasis they said that wasn't on the invoice. I never got an invoice so I didn't know what they were taking about, and I would not have gone with them if I knew they didn't want to move things upstairs. They reluctantly moved the furniture upstairs after I prompted them to. I tried to get them to wait as I would disassemble the furniture and then they would move it, as it would have only taken around twenty minutes to disassemble. They would have gotten paid more if they waited but they said they needed to leave so now I'm stuck with heavy furniture in a location I can't move. My advice to consumers who choose oasis: push for the invoice and be clear on what you want done in your chat and make sure the company and you sign off on some sort of documentation. Oasis also tried to charge me a service fee for gas, and I specifically asked them up front if they had service fees (which they said no). I went with them because they had good reviews and didn't have any hidden fees (or so I thought). All in all I'm not the happiest consumer right now.

Saul and Felix did an amazing job today unloading my shipping container into a storage unit. They also loaded a U-Haul and brought it to my house. They both made the whole experience so easy. Saul is extremely responsive and patient. I had to delay my move multiple times because of delivery delays. He stayed professional and patient the entire time. I have several moves coming up and I will definitely be using them again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
