I contacted DB Carpet Care for air duct cleaning. Prior to the appointment, I called Daniel multiple times to ask questions about their process for cleaning the duct. The reason I did this was because there are a lot of scams related to air duct cleaning and I wanted to make sure this was not the case. Daniel was courteous and answered all my questions. When he showed up for the appointment, he said my house's air duct was cleaned as a whistle and did not charge me for even coming to look. I appreciated his professionalism and he definitely has more of my businesses from now on.

Juan was wonderful! I would recommend him to anyone looking for work around the house! Not only did he help with the ceiling fans as originally planned but he also helped with a washer/dryer connection issue. Thank you!

Let me begin by saying that I cannot prove that the work was excellent or terrible until I get into those ducts and find out. I was not at home when the job was done. The job, which included 25 ducts and a dryer vent, was done in roughly two hours and I paid $320 for it. Use your judgement on whether it was done too fast or too expensively, I don't know. May be he did it all right and with great efficiency. I had the option of going with 3 other companies that would have done it cheaper, but I decided to go with Lonestar Airduct and Chimney because of its outstanding reviews. So, Why 1 star? Because he asked for it. Post sale customer service was unpleasant, to say the least. I have attached a copy of my chat with the company, where I am complaining that there is odor in the house despite all the cleaning (I got carpets and tiles cleaned by another company). I never asked for a refund or for him to come again at no charge to fix anything. I just expressed my dissatisfaction (like I did with the carpet cleaning company). Instead of politely educating me on other sources of odor, the person expressed agitation and asked me to rate him 1 star and "go away". The carpet cleaning company, on the other hand, did just the opposite. They called me to explain why I was still experiencing the odor issue and suggested a few options, including that I call my duct cleaning company and ask if they had used a microbial spray to kill any microorganisms hiding in the ducts. I would never be able to tell how well or poorly the job was done, but I will always remember his level of service post sale.

Can't say enough good things about this company! I had a master bathroom converted into a standup shower. I also had many other problems that they fixed for me. Pluming, sheetrock, structure beams, and a window needed replacing. I changed the scope of the work after they started and Isaac helped me the whole way. He did not overcharge me when I made additions and his main concern the whole time was that my wife and I were happy with the work. It's hard to find contractors these days that have that level of customer service. I wish I had found them sooner. They also treated my house with the best care that could be expected. They really take the extra time for small things like protecting floors, walls, our things etc. They are professional and knowledgeable which makes them great to guide customers that are unsure of what they want. I can't wait to use them again on some other projects and I would definitely refer this company to even my closest friends and family. I hope this review helps them make connections with other customers who I know will be as happy as we are. Thanks again Isaac!

We had water damage due to a pipe leak. We thought everything had been repaired until we noticed mold. Victor came out and tested for moisture which demonstrated quite a bit still in the area. He removed the wet materials, dried the area out, and treated the mold. He also brought our attention to a damaged air duct. While it was frustrating to find so much damage, we are glad to have found out so it could be properly fixed. We appreciate his attention to detail, safety precautions, and commitment to doing things right.

I am very pleased with the way John ( and Antonio) completed my projects. Knowledgeable, efficient and took the time and effort to make sure all the wall mounted shelves were secured to the wall studs. They did a very good job cleaning up too. Already planning to hire him for my next project.

Where shall I begin? After Hurricane Harvey, my house was a mess. I saw an add for Duct replace/repair in the newspaper. I have an old home and my ducts are original. I called and scheduled an appointment. I had a gentleman come out to my house. He was very knowledgeable and nice. He climbed up into my attic to check out the damage. He recommended that I replace my entire duct system and that I should add insulation as well. He asked me to come up into the attic with him to better show me and explain the situation. I was shocked at all the damages. I immediately called my husband at work. And the technician was super nice and explained to him what needed to be done. He left me an estimate. I didnt feel any pressure, or sales tactic. When my husband got home I told him to get up in the attic and see for himself the damages. We discussed it, and the following day we called back Quality Air Of America to do the job. We were transferred to the install dept and scheduled right away. The installers showed up, and removed the old ducts and insulation. Once that stuff was out we had a better understanding of all the bacteria that we were breathing. They installed the new ducts and sprayed new insulation after. They were very clean and proffesional. My indoor air quality and efficiency is so much better after Quality Air took care of it. Thank you Quality Air of America You guys are the best!!! I am so happy I found you guys. God bless. Maria T

Mike and his guys gave us a fair and honest quote upfront that included anything optional we may want to add. They showed up on time, worked hard the whole time and left without making a mess. Best of all they did a great job at eliminating any mold that had built up in our duct system. Seoul’s definitely recommend and also use again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

    • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
    • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
    • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
    • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
    • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
    • Ductwork properly protected.
    • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How much does it cost to have your air ducts cleaned?

If you’re concerned about dust, allergens or mold, it may be time to have your air ducts cleaned. The national average cost for air duct cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Air duct cleaning costs will vary based on a number of factors such as your location in the country, the age and condition of your air ducts, the number of linear feet to be cleaned, and any repairs your ducts may need. HVAC cleaning companies should clearly outline what is included in their services and at what rate, so always make sure you understand and have a written agreement before work begins. Here are some examples of average air duct cleaning costs:

    • Tiered pricing for different levels of service:
      • Standard cleaning: $100, which may include truck-mounted industrial vacuums, high-pressure air wands and air snakes to clean all supply and return vents, branch lines, and main trunk lines.
      • Advanced cleaning: $200, which may include standard cleaning services, plus rotobrush or viper clean sweep in the main trunk lines.
      • Ultimate cleaning: $400, which may include advanced cleaning, plus insertion of a viper microline into all vents to force debris down the branch lines and into the main trunk lines, to be handled by the viper clean sweep. Typically, all ductwork surface is contacted, before-and-after photos are provided, and the furnace is cleaned.
    • A flat rate for unlimited vents: $289.
    • Additional fees for larger houses: $20 for each additional 500 square feet over 2,500.
