Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do house cleaners cost in Houston?

The best house cleaners in Houston charge a starting rate between $50 and $135. Your price will vary depending on how many bedrooms and bathrooms need to be cleaned, as well as the state and size of your home. If your home has mold issues, be sure to discuss this with your house cleaner before the appointment. You will likely be asked to decide between a standard clean, deep clean or a move-out clean.

How do I choose the best house cleaning service in Houston?

Budget, home type and the number of times your home needs to be cleaned are all important factors to consider when searching for the best cleaning service in Houston. Some companies may cater to different budgets or house styles, requiring you to consider your needs carefully.

Because of Houston's humid weather, especially during the summer months, it's important for cleaners to pay special attention to areas inside the home that may have collected too much moisture and, in turn, mildew.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

How much do maids or house cleaners make in Houston?

The average salary of professional housekeepers and maids in the Houston area is about $21,120 annually or $10.15 per hour. This is slightly lower than the current $25,570 national average salary for maids and housekeepers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

Mid-August Jennifer and her team came to clean our house for pictures and an open house we were preparing for. Due to my circumstance I could not leave and they did an amazing job even with my two toddlers chatting them up! I highly recommend then and will be booking them again for my move out clean! Thank you Ready Maids for making this process less stressful for us!

I couldn't be more pleased with Lana & Roberts company and service. I've had a service weekly for 2 years. I keep my home clean but need and wanted a service to make certain I didn't fall behind and I'll admit I hate mopping and dusting. I had grown increasingly frustrated with my old service coming home to find a stinky house smelling of old mop water just not clean just didn't seem right. I found Executive Maids on thumbtack and hired them. My house sparkles now. It smells clean, looks clean is clean. They've already had 2 services and I couldn't be more pleased. The price is competitive and fair. The most exciting part is they have a bonus service every week. It's free! They will clean your baseboards, refrigerator, wipe down cabinets, clean oven all sorts of different bonus features that you rate in order of need and they do on the rotation. So cool. I would recommend executive maids to anyone looking to have their home truly cleaned with heart. Sincerely, Kerri Lukish 713-545-8724

My experience with Maid to Change has been amazing- they are communicative, prompt and they keep my house spotless. They come every other week which is incredibly helpful for my family (with a one year old running around there can be quite a mess) and they take their time to ensure every important area is thoroughly cleaned. The owner is super responsive and kind and I am so thankful I found this business!

***Please read this*** I have a 1900 sq. ft townhouse with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. I told her that as well. We agreed on a price of $150 which I thought was too high but I have company coming in to town so I said ok. This ain’t my first rodeo and I assumed her cleaning ladies would be the ones who rang my doorbell, but it was only her at the front door saying that before she has them come inside she wants to look around first. But she didn’t look around, she just immediately said there’s no way they will be able to do it for $150, they need more. I asked why and she said because it’s not a single story so it’s like cleaning two houses instead of one. I told her regardless if it’s a one story or two story I gave her the correct square footage, the correct number of bedrooms and bathrooms. I also told her she should have asked that before coming over. Sorry if her maids have to walk up the stairs. Honestly, I think she could tell I live at an expensive property and she tried to get more money out of me. Plus my place is very clean already…I was just wanting a light cleaning. I wasn’t going to pay her more than &150 so I thanked her for her Tom but told her I’ll find someone else. Bottom line, something is way off here so do yourself a favor and don’t waste your time, go with another maid service.
