Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Had scheduled and received confirmation with another moving company for a particular day to move. Need to be out of my former residence by March 31st/ The company I was scheduled with for the move on 03/29/2017 sent me an email on the evening of 03/28/2017 stating their driver had a family emergency and they would not be able to move me on the 29th as scheduled. But offered to move me on April 1st. This was not acceptable. D & J contacted me immediately and quoted me a reasonable price and was able to move me the same day. The owner and his staff arrive in a reasonable time, came in a view the items I needed to mover and advised me on how the move would proceed. They were great. Very professional, asked questions and when everything was loaded onto the truck drove to the new location, they placed all the items where I wanted them to be placed and when I asked their opinions, their suggestions were greatly appreciated. I plan to use tem again for my next move.

Blue Mule Movers provided an extremely hard working team who were prompt to begin working and worked extremely fast. The movers did arrive slightly late on my day of move, but it was totally understandable due to large traffic from being the first day of school in all of the metroplex. I was contacted 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time to be aware that the movers would be 30 minutes late. It did not bother me at all. if you are looking for an economical move to get done quickly, there is no better place to go. Just make sure you are aware of what items go into boxes and make sure the movers are careful with furniture items that could be knicked or chipped during transport. All furniture should have the same number of screws and bolts. Other than that I would certainly consider Blue Mule for my future moves. Especially if it is a short distance.

Brandon and his team did a fantastic job moving my commercial gas oven. They arrived on time, developed a plan to get my oven down a steep hill and loaded it up. I was extremely appreciative that they were able to accommodate a Sunday move. I would use them again and definitely recommend them to anyone in need of a mover.

I was very pleased with the work done by Extra Set of Hands Moving & Delivery Service. They responded to me quickly on Thumbtack and were able to give a quote for the work I needed done. They showed up on time and did a prompt and professional job. They quickly moved and reassembled furniture for me from my neighbors home to mine. The furniture was very heavy to me, but they picked it up and moved it like it was nothing. They verified the exact location for each piece of furniture and quickly reassembled the furniture. I highly recommend this company for moving furniture.

First off, let me say that everyone I dealt with was nice. That being said, I do not give a one star readily. It was raining almost the entire time that the move took place. That is where anything I can say to defend them ends. I paid $700 to move 11-13 miles away. The job was nowhere near done. Let me say again, $700 and the job wasn't finished. I had to make over ten trips myself to finish the move. The trailer they brought could have easily fit everything that we had, but things were packed by people who had no idea how to pack a trailer. I tried to mention something, and was told that they do it for a living, and they proceeded to not pack. there were four of them, which I was told would make them fast. I used a moving company to move into that house, (wish they were available), and two of them finished moving under almost identical circumstances in almost half the time. Two of the movers were working at a decent speed, and the other two were very slow, when they weren't standing around watching. Many, many boxes were dropped, and a dolly with a stack of boxes was left to fall while they were watching one of them try to move the trailer. Why the trailer was being moved was because the trailer was parked far in the street, and they were walking through the rain and a huge puddle cause by boxes they put to walk across, and only got wet and made the water get backed up, which I had to move. I want to point out, they tried to moved the trailer for about twenty minutes and it ended up exactly where it began. They guy trying to move it did not know how to back up a trailer, and gave up. The previous movers easily got their trailer in, (I've backed up trailers and it is fairly easy to do so there.). I also want to point out that everyone stopped everything and they were all watching the entire time he was playing with the trailer. I packed the boxes very, very well. I had a ton of rags and pads to do so. If I had not done so, many things would have been broken. One box did shatter, luckily it wasn't anything expensive. They also did end up moving a bunch of trash, clearly trash around a trash can, but left things that were clearly to be moved. The also moved a bunch of empty boxes... open, empty boxes, but they didn't have space to move actual boxes, (they did have tons of space in the trailer). I was told that they would be the faster crew, but it was a painfully long move, (again, taking longer than the two guys from the other company). We were there the whole time, and they could have asked if we wanted the trash or empty boxes moved too, but they did leave the furniture that I asked multiple times for them to take. Moving into the place, I had the door propped open with something on the floor, properly. Sometime during the moved, not sure why, they jammed a tool in between the door and the doorjamb. I told them to just get the stuff in the house, because it had already taken hours too long. They did that, in the silliest way possible. They locked rooms off with furniture in ways that don't make any sense. On a side note, the floor was scratched at the new place because a pad came off of the couch foot, I'm not sure if it was them, but I'm fairly confident that they knew either way, but didn't say anything. Just a side note. It was just a very expensive experience, and it seemed like I was paying for some guys to hang out and move what they wanted. I've moved many times, and, even when you just have chill friends helping you move they move faster and more professionally than these guys. Save yourself some money, stress, and time, and get someone else. I waited to leave a review so that I would not be irritated when doing so. I am not mad, but I regret everything about using this company.
