It has been a great experience having Janet as a tutor. She has worked with my daughter to strengthen material learned in the past so it will help her with the new material she receives. Janet has been able to catch her up with difficult Geometry lessons and get her ready in advance of the material she is going to learn. My daughter's grade went from nearly failing to all A's in B's in K Level Geometry. I can definitely reccomend Janet as a tutor.

I found Oludare here on thumbtack when I was looking for a tutor for my contemporary mathematics class which is similar to college Algebra. Math has never been my thing but Oludare really helps me understand it where I can easily make good grades on my assignments and test. He is a great tutor who is even willing to stay late with you just to help you understand something. I will definitely use him in the future and recommend him to anyone I know who needs help in math.

Mr. Martinsen has been my son's math (Algebra 2, Pre-Cal, AP Cal and SAT Math) tutor for many years. As an educator myself, I recognize how important a solid math foundation is to a student, no matter what subject they major in college. Hollis was recommended to us by a friend. Hollis has a very flexible schedule and will work with you until you understand the material. Here are just a few reasons why he may be a good fit for you: 1) Hollis meets his students at their level. He doesn't waste your time reviewing concepts that you already understand. He figures out quickly what you already know, and goes from there. 2) Hollis pushes his students to the next level. My son has always been strong in math, but needed clarity on several topics. He will push to deeply understand the topic. He has taken my son to the top of his class. 3) Excellent SAT Math tutor. The Math section of the SAT is not only a test of your understanding of math concepts, but also a test of your ability to perform on a timed, standardized test. For my son, he was able to provide him with test taking strategies that enabled him to get a 740/800 (99th percentile) in the spring of 2017.

I was desperate for an Algebra tutor for my son. Bonnie came to assess my son's needs and recommended a tutor best to fit them. We couldn't have asked for anyone better. We got Yoshi & he was so professional and on the top of his game that literally the next day my son aced his quiz. He went from a low D to now a high B hopefully an A by the time school finishes. My only regret is not finding The Brain Domain earlier in the year. This was my first time using Thumbtack & writing a review. I highly recommend them!!!

I received tutoring from Elizabeth Fry in college level Calculus I and II and in Physics I. She was absolutely amazing as my tutor! During lessons she would come with an action plan we could follow if I didn't already have specific questions and problems myself. She was incredibly patient and worked with me until I truly understood the material. Often times she knew what exactly it was that I stuggled with even though I didn't even know what I didn't know! Additionally, she provided me with ample websites, tools, and other resources that I could use when questions popped up and I was on my own. These were especially useful! She also made herself available through email if I had a specific question or problem and was quick to respond. During lessons she would take notes and solve problems in her own notebook. At the end of the lesson she would give these notes to me to refer back to later. Overall Elizabeth was an outstanding tutor and I would recommend her in a heartbeat. She goes above and beyond and really does care about helping you understand the material.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
