Chuck was able to engage with my 15 year old daughter right from the start and was able to help her understand Algebra 1 and pass the class. He explains mathematical operation in a variety of ways until the students grasps the concept. Now he is helping her during the summer to get a head start on Geometry. Chuck is very easy to work with and super flexible. Just don't use him too much because WE NEED HIM!

Tutor is awesome, understands what I am expecting from him for my child. I feel she is in good hands. He also asks if I have anything specific to be included in the curriculum. He does is homework to teach in the next class.

Vikas Dawar is an outstanding tutor. We worked together on a graduate level statistics class that I was taking. I hadn’t been in school in more than 15 years, and had very limited understanding of the subject. Vikas did an incredible job of explaining concepts in a way that made them much easier to understand. Vikas would show me an example of how the problem should be solved and then would have me practice it. For me, it was the best way to learn and like having a professor assisting me rather than a tutor. Vikas was always available when I needed him, and he also made time to help me even when it was last minute. On my final paper for the course, Vikas helped me brainstorm and expand on my ideas and then he helped me think through what resources I needed and how I would prove my thesis. I am excited to use Vikas as a tutor again in the future. I am positive he will help me understand more complex subjects in a way I would never learn by simply doing the course on my own. Vikas turned a course I was dreading for months into something I enjoyed and took pride in learning. Thank you for your help, Vikas.

I cannot recommend Jesse highly enough!! He is not only a complete math whiz, he knows how to relate to people and teach concepts in a way that students can understand and remember. Over the past couple of years, my son's scores in Algebra II, Pre-Cal and Calculus have jumped two and three letter grades, thanks to just a little help from Jesse. He is not only an incredible tutor who is always reliable and responsive, but also just a great guy all around!

Claire has had a great improvement in her algebra course as a freshman with Ms. Vecera. She is punctual, understanding, calm and to the point with her skills. It took Claire a good 4 lessons to know that we were with the right person. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a true up to date math tutor.

I was tutored for Calculus 2 and really enjoyed the sessions. No spoon-fed information but super helpful when I had questions. Each topic I struggled with was finally explained in a way I understood- much better than the explanations from my prof's lectures. Also very good about working with my schedule to set up sessions.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
